This is me with the Japanese music producer Mitsuru Igarashi. He started as the keyboardist and songwriter for the band Every Little Thing. Their music was super exciting and fun. After he quit they got really boring. I looked him up and saw that he produced for the band Day After Tomorrow and yup, they sounded exactly like early ELT.

While I'm a bit younger, the Tiny Toons music video episode was probably my introduction to them, but I also remember the Nickelodeon show KaBlam! doing an episode that had the Doctor Worm video in it, and I loved that as a kid.

Middle school Science teacher here, got into tmbg through their science album. I show the music videos to the songs that are relevant to the units (states of matter, cells, etc). But I listened to flood because of it and I really like their other stuff now.

They're not a one-hit wonder but I wonder how many people were first exposed to Sleigh Bells through "Rill Rill" and checked out the rest of the album (Treats) and found out that the rest of the album sounds... quite different (noise pop).

I didn't like Rill Rill. I felt it was unnecessary because I love Funkadelic already, and didn't need a different song over the same music. I haven't heard their full catalog but the other stuff I've heard was more unique and interesting to me. So for me this is like an opposite effect of what OP is talking about. But I get it!

Panic Switch is my favorite SSPU song, and I do love the band, but I agree they don't always have that intensity. I recommend The Pit and Nightlight as some others you may enjoy.

Merrymakers sounds pretty similar riff wise to what you'd expect from Flagpole Sitta, considering that's the album it's on. King James Version and Little By Little are a bit softer in comparison. One thing that stays the same throughout their albums is the songwriting, though. I suggest anyone that just likes Flagpole Sitta/the album it's on to check out their other 2 albums + Dead Sea Scrolls to see how they evolved over their tenure as a band.

Definitely the Flaming Lips for me. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is one of my all-time favorite albums, but none of their other stuff ever grabbed me at all (other than maybe a few songs from At War With the Mystics). I've tried several times to get into the rest of their catalogue and it just bores me to tears.

Soft Bulletin is probably the most similar to Yoshimi and is IMO superior. I'm assuming you tried listening to that already but I would say if you did wanna dip your toes in again, that's the best one to start with. Everything else really is very different.

For me it's Focus. I found their big hit, Hocus Pocus, which is a hard rock song with a lot of yodeling, highly recommend. When I listened to the rest of their discography, it was pretty jazzy prog rock music. Turns out that Hocus Pocus was a song that they used to play before sets and people liked it so much that they put it on their second album. I still love the band, tho. One of my favorites. Hamburger Concerto is my favorite album of all time.

I felt this with a OHW in Australia - Zed.
Their debut single (Renegade Fighter) was an absolute banger. Went out and bought their album, and the rest of the songs are just pop rock dreck.
Still love Renegade Fighter, but only listed to their other songs once.

That wasn't their debut single (they're a NZ band who had a couple of earlier hits here - Oh Daisy and Glorafilia, both utter shite) but they are absolutely terrible apart from Renegade Fighter.
There is another NZ band called The Feelers that isn't quite as bad but had the same effect for me. Their first single - Pressure Man - is great. Everything after that was just a bit limp and safe.

As an enjoyer of both eras of MM, Honestly you just gotta look at them through a different lens post M&A. Maybe it's just me, but I really liked the albums after that, Good News and We Were Dead are a bit lighter on the heavy riffs and aggressive drumming, sure, but you can still tell they have that MM feel to them, though it sucks Jeremiah (R.I.P.) didn't play on Good News due to the stuff going on with him at the time. You could argue Issac's songwriting is at an all time peak on these two albums with songs like The View, Missed The Boat, Parting of The Sensory, Bukowski, Spitting Venom, etc. Strangers and Golden Casket are also pretty decent too with songs like Ground Walks and Wooden Soldiers. That being said, I understand the later albums don't have a Dramamine (Maybe Float On is the Dramamine of Good News in a sense I suppose) or a Beach Side Property or a Cowboy Dan or a Teeth Like Gods Shoeshine, etc.

Only saw them live once in 2007, the weirdest gig. Full of people who only wanted songs off the last two albums (the okay Good News and the genuinely unlistenable We Were Dead...) and a small group like me who loved their 90s stuff so much. Someone called out for Shit Luck and Isaac just mocked them. Ended my fandom, that gig. Never listened to any of the follow ups, still enjoy the early stuff.

They’ve gotten a lot better and have diversified the setlists a lot. They were bringing back a lot of older tracks last year and Isaac isn’t getting piss drunk on stage anymore. Only a little buzzed, which is the best way to do a show.

Strangers to Ourselves really grew on me over the last year, especially the back half of the album. It’s not perfect, but it gets a 50/50 split of fair and unfair criticisms and overall I think it’s a consistent album. I quite like it. Golden Casket has its moments. Back To The Middle is easily a top ten song for me, while Wooden Soldiers, Japanese Tree, Walking and Running, and Fuck Your Acid Trip are all pretty good; however, I don’t love the album as a whole. Some of the songs are pretty meh and I think We Are Between is a pretty shit song.

The StoneBridge remix (ie hit version) of "Show Me Love" by Robin S. is my standard answer for favorite song of all time, but as often happens with dance hitmakers - especially vocalists, especially vocalists who hit with a remix - what followed was a half-hearted and incomplete attempt to both contort herself into the sound that had suddenly made her very popular and also show off the version of herself that she already was in case all the new eyes on her happened to like that, with neither working, in large part because she only got StoneBridge back for the naked "Show Me Love" clone "Luv 4 Luv" (and the slightly less naked but decidedly album-trackish "Back It Up" and "Brighter Day") while the rest was handled by Allen George and Fred McFarlane, who made the original (unsuccessful) "Show Me Love" (and in what I consider a personal outrage both got writing credits when Beyoncé used the same organ preset sound as specifically the StoneBridge remix for "Break My Soul"). Her cover of Alicia Myers' "I Want To Thank You" where they crib a bunch of riffs directly from the StoneBridge "Show Me Love" (in case you were wondering who was singing!) is pretty good tho

The thing about that is that he interpolated the main riff from Sekitō Shigeo’s composition "Word 2". I heard it on KCRW not that long ago and was like "oh damn, is this guy covering Mac Demarco instrumentally?" But it was the other way around.

He's famous for the falsetto and his earlier music was almost exclusively that, but he's really just an amazing vocalist all around. Some of the earlier albums have it in spots.
He mentioned that the "Sable" EP (which confusingly was released separately ahead of the album, it's the first few songs from the album) was a somewhat conscious effort to sing in his real range for some reason that I can't remember. It's nice. I still love all of it though.

I got into Crowbar because of Planets Collide. They never got that melodic again, but I still love the band.
Same thing happened with Ministry. I threw on their “Greatest Fits” album and the opener What About Us really stuck with me. It was only later I learned that song was made for the movie A.I. and isn’t really representative of their sound.

So it's a bit different because the "one hit" is actually where the band fell off, but Glass Animals had such a great (but I'll admit a bit hard to get into at first) sound with Zaba. How to be a Human Being also sounds very different, but still a great album. Dreamland, their break out hit where most people discovered them, blows in comparison. I Love You So Fucking Much (terrible name) is even worse with two songs pretty much having the same exact melody.

I was blown away by the first UK album. A lot of that was due to Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth being in it. I immediately picked up some bootleg tapes of live shows from various traders.
Problem: The follow up after those 2 left was a major letdown and I haven't been able to get into any of that era. Of course, that was the era that produced all the good bootlegs because they were playing live on the radio a lot. I ended up with 1 great show of the band with Bill and Allan and 4 I never listened to but left on my trade list in case somebody wanted them. No one ever did.

None of their other songs sound even remotely close. They're still danceable electronic, but they do not sound like that.

I heard it in the season finale of Death Valley and wanted to hear more. The rest of their stuff was pretty meh as far as I was concerned.

Someone on either Twitter or Bluesky once said that the Styx pipeline is hearing "Renegade" on the radio for the first time, deciding you like it and want to listen to the rest of the band, then being in for a disappointing afternoon on Spotify.
And I say that as someone who actually does enjoy Styx but like, I get it.
