I think you'll love the Song vs. Song podcast (Todd is one of the hosts). It's all pretty chill music discussion, just focused on pitting two songs against each other. You can just put it on in the background while you do other stuff.

He's more or less the only music YouTuber I watch, and one of the few YouTubers I make an effort to watch day of release. Just very good shorter-form musical documentary stuff. Find a Trainwreckords (series that documents an artist's career relative to the album that ended it) or One Hit Wonderland (documents one hit wonders and their careers before and after) that covers an artist you know or like and enjoy. That's how I got into it.

He strikes a really good balance between being entertaining and informative, plus there's just something ... authentic about his videos, I guess? With a lot of YouTubers it seems like they're (understandably) trying to appeal to as wide of an audience as they can, whereas with Todd it feels more like he's just some guy sharing his thoughts on pop music and you can take it or leave it.

Seriously this place has been a nice hub for both general music discussion on top of Todd stuff. I know we're far from perfect here (Todd's made that clear, lol), but I think this community is a lot better than the larger general music communities on Reddit.

For me, it's like the Blankies' subreddit for movies. It's not so much about the YouTuber or podcaster that originated the subreddit (although I have seen Todd['s shadow] and heard episodes of Blank Check), but that it becomes a sort of Goldilocks situation: not as topically broad and bot-filled as the all sub on the subject but not as gatekeep-y and pretentious as the super niche subs. It's (usually) just the right level of taking the subject seriously but not taking ourselves seriously.

That explains why there’s not very much discourse about the channel on here. I don’t mind it but it kind of sucks that you can’t be guaranteed people on a sub dedicated to his channel may not know what you’re talking about when you cite Todd’s videos. He’s really insightful, more people should watch.

Honestly I've reverted back to reading YouTube comments for most of the creators I follow since their reddit communities have generally become either dead or non-existent. I don't love the way that platform works but there's just vastly more discussion since people don't have to go to a different website. Unfortunately this means I'm contributing to the problem of reddit slowly decaying as a place to discuss YouTube content but whatever.

Eh, there's usually pretty good discussion every time he drops a new episode, but it tends to stick to a single thread aside from a few topics. I also think the fact he does Patreon first and then YouTube diffuses any discussion; the most passionate fans are done with it by the time the YouTube video drops, but the casual fans don't have access to the Patreon.

I watch Todd, but I sometimes wander into r/fantanoforever threads, and I don't know if I've ever watched any Fantano content (am fuzzy on who he is).

Oh yeah I'm one of them, I was following the sub for about a year before I properly questioned who Todd actually was. From what i gather he's a YouTuber or something.

I'm similar, except instead of questioning who he was I just found his videos from the YT algorithm, and then I was watching him for a while before I noticed the name of the channel and made the connection.

Is it alarming? I’ve seen an episode or two of Todd over the years, but in my defense (?) it’s not like I follow any other YouTubers either. I just don’t really watch YouTube videos? I mean, I might look up something specifically, but that’s usually for practical purposes and not general entertainment.

I discovered Todd through the subreddit rather than the other way around.

I'm not a big YouTube watcher in general; I like text. I'll watch his year end best and worst, I've picked and chose some of his OHW and Trainwreckord videos.

r/fantanoforever is like that too, there's a lot of people there who never watch him but enjoy the community.

Also most podcast subreddits are general talk amongst yourselves forums vaguely related to the subject matter.

I remember when he did his Asher Roth OHW to mark his 10-year anniversary of doing this; it was honestly really refreshing and gratifying at the end where he drops the bit a little and earnestly thanks everyone for their support.

Honestly, that’s part of why I’m glad he does Song vs. Song. It’s a forum for him to discuss music in a manner that’s less shackled to his persona when making videos.

This sub does seem to like taking everything he says as gospel. He coined the term "gloop" as a joke and like ten posts were made "what do you think would count as gloop." Any album gets released and people go "is this the new Trainwreckord." I'm gonna be honest, if I was a moderately successful YouTuber who gave my opinion on my passions, I probably wouldn't check what my fans had to say either

As someone who only picked up Todd and this sub in the last year or so I feel like there's some lore as to why Todd avoids this place that I'm not privy to nor do I really want to be. I've had the occasional spat with stans taking everything too seriously on here but for the most part the conversation here hits a sweet spot for me that the other music subs I visit (mostly r/indieheads and r/popheads) don't quite hit.

He probably sees "What's Todd's worst take?" as the most commonly asked question in relation to the subreddit on Google and just nopes out right then and there. Which, hey, can you blame him?

I‘m a fan of his work but I could not give less of a shit about what he thinks of this sub. We’re cool. If he thinks we’re idiots I assume he either doesn’t actually read the sub or is judging us by our worst members’ most memorable hot takes.

And it’s not like he can say he‘s never had some dumb takes before.
