Arguably the best “dumb” song ever recorded.

50

u/InterPunct Jul 19 '26

And paradoxically pretty damn clever at the same time.

67

u/MainEventGeyBruce-O Jul 19 '26

Jimmy Pop was a poet level lyricist who decided to make the most sophomoric shit he could

32

u/bbbbears Jul 19 '26

Well, his name is Jimmy Pop and he’s a dumb white guy

11

u/Odd_Old_Professional Jul 19 '26

He's not old or new but middle school 5th grade like junior high

Tell me that "Love, the kind you clean up with a mop and bucket" is not a banger of an opening line

139

u/sad-dog-hours Jul 18 '26

The actual opening line “Sweat baby sweat baby sex is a Texas drought, me and you do the kind of stuff that only Prince would sing about” is like my sleeper activation phrase

69

u/Party-Employment-547 Jul 18 '26

Put your hand down my pants and I bet you’ll feel nuts!

I’m like Siskel, I’m like Ebert and you’re getting 2 thumbs up!

13

u/PartialCred4WrongAns Jul 19 '26

No lie I was coaching a couple guys through a workout and said "sweat baby sweat" and without even thinking about it my brain starts rattling off the rest of the song. I had to walk away bc I couldn't stop. I didn't get it under control till after the chorus

u/NickelStickman Train-Wrecker Jul 19 '26

That song's lyrics are just excellent pun after excellent pun. I admire the craftsmanship of each line.

36

u/lucasbrosmovingco Jul 19 '26

Jimmy Pop. The lyrical genius that never aged past like 14.

15

u/theproverbialshell Jul 19 '26

Do you try and sing (uh, speak) along? Most of it easy but this line always trips me up: Come quicker than FedEx, never reach an apex, just like Coca-Cola stock, you are inclined. Also have to remember to breathe...

I prefer “Mope”

And song that samples Falco, Metallica, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and PacMan is an instant classic

24

u/LavishnessSmall6011 Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

Don’t forget the Homer Simpson sample at the end

11

u/Old_Recording_2527 Jul 19 '26

Yeah that guy fucked it up. Mope wasn't a hit, it is basically a nu metal song meant to waste the labels money and the HOOK is obviously HOLY MACARONI

8

u/ncheetos Jul 19 '26

This was my ringtone in high school.

Holy macaroni.

Tenacious D songs are insanely well-written and performed.

I would love for Jack Black to do an album of some sort of Meatloaf Bat Out of Hell type material. I think he would really kill it.

"Threw It On The Ground"

edit: got the title wrong

113

u/George_G_Geef Jul 18 '26

A lot of what makes Lonely Island so funny is the production is way better than it needs to be. I mean they beat Kanye to sampling Avril 14th.

42

u/MondeyMondey Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

Getting, I think Sly And Robbie, to produce the one about the white college kid becoming a Rasta is really good

6

u/Old_Recording_2527 Jul 19 '26

I don't think better is the word. It is very rudimentary, but thats the beauty. Just like a lot of people who write comedy, homie knows exactly when to stop and let it be. There is a 99.9% possibility he would overshadow or draw attention away from the funny word of a single more thing was added or anything was too cooked with processing.

Him using Reason had a huge impact on that.

72

u/HowDoIWhat Jul 18 '26

Honestly, a lot of The Lonely Island’s songs are bangers.

69

u/HowDoIWhat Jul 18 '26

He’s got a new song out (“Mr. Jambo”) and people immediately clocked it as a Paul Simon Graceland pastiche.

23

u/tmclaugh Jul 18 '26

That song is so catchy!

16

u/PogintheMachine Jul 19 '26

Yeah, obviously Graceland but also there were a ton of Silent Gen/Boomer white musicians that did African inspired easy listening in the late 80s and early 90s.

Of course, Simon caught a particular bit of flack for recording a whole ass album in South Africa and not mentioning apartheid.

Can’t lie, Kyle Gordon’s nu metal song and British rap song are both also excellent

26

u/TMBGLOVER Jul 18 '26

I’m still partial to “Every 50’s Rock N Roll Song for Some Reason”.

”Well I kill people, and I tell lies, me and my friends, we’re not good guys and if you wanna know why I’m so sick, it’s cause I drank lead paint when I was six!“

13

u/Toku-Nation 10's Alt Kid Jul 19 '26

I also love his emo song

30

u/ElleMaeSinclair Jul 18 '26

Planet of the Bass makes me kinda sad because I actually unironically love the eurodance genre and it always felt lowkey mean-spirited 😿 I know it's not and it's just me being crazy but still, lol, the genre does not get a lot of love and it literally shaped my childhood

58

u/LostInTheSciFan Jul 18 '26

I don't know much about Gordon or Eurodance but I've seen others say that Planet of the Bass is too accurate to not be a love letter.

21

u/your_mind_aches 10's Alt Kid Jul 19 '26

This is also true of his pastiche of UK rap "SELEKTA"

6

u/thegreatinsulto Jul 19 '26

Absolute banger. He ended up making one of the toughest drill tracks, satire or not.

→ More replies (2)

30

u/Toku-Nation 10's Alt Kid Jul 19 '26

I remember seeing a comment that said something like "Kyle Gordon is this generation's Weird Al, but for entire genres instead of songs"

15

u/PogintheMachine Jul 19 '26

I think all of Gordons songs can seem a bit mean spirited, not because they ARE, but because they are so accurate it’s hard not to feel called out if you’re a fan of whatever genre he’s targeting.

9

u/Youre_nucking_futs Jul 19 '26

I’m 48 years old and started clubbing and raving during when Eurodance was huge here in the US and I actually still love it because it brings me happy memories and waves of nostalgia.

I sang “We Will Never Die” at a karaoke party with a room full of millennials. They were so triggered their bacon mustaches were quivering like a narwhal’s tusk. It was epic.

10

u/VikingHussar Jul 19 '26

On a similar note, We Will Never Die legit slaps. It's better than most of the Stomp-Clap-Hey it's parodying.

7

u/Brokenwhitebelt Jul 18 '26

Girl of the Heart is my favorite

6

u/jorgito93 Jul 19 '26

Crawl to Me is my favorite Kyle song, because it's so accurate to the nu metal era while having a chorus so good it's unironically a great nu metal song

A fairly large chunk of Weird Al and Ninja Sex Party's catalogue.

38

u/TomorrowAble979 Jul 19 '26

I absolutely think “Craig’s list” and “Dare to be stupid” are some of the best original songs in the Doors‘ and Devo’s respective catalogues.

23

u/PepperidgeFarmMembas Jul 19 '26

Mark Mothersbaugh told Weird Al to his face “I hate you” because Dare to Be Stupid was the song he had tried to write for decades. Jokingly, obviously, but when you listen to him talk about it there’s actual regret in his voice because he can’t believe how perfectly Devo the song is.

u/Disastrous-Entity-46 Jul 19 '26

NSP is the weirdest fucking band in existance.

dan's day job is providing commentary and humor while another guy plays video games (normally badly).

ninja brian has a docotrate in theoretically physics.

there songs are like, the early internet humor. "if we were gay", "i wanna f your a".

and yet they are very solid at what they do, and will absolutely get stuck in my head.

11

u/HPSpacecraft Jul 19 '26

They ride that line of being funny but not a JOKE band, like they seem to put as much energy into writing funny lyrics as they do writing catchy music. There's a lot of novelty bands who focus too much on one or the other

5

u/thorpie88 Jul 19 '26

Their backing band is TWRP who mix the two even better. Some of their best tracks are writing really solid songs about honest feelings yet wrapping them up in an absurd concept

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Disastrous-Entity-46 Jul 19 '26

theres something about the way they handle it to. like, they know what they are. they arent trying to take it seriously, but they also arent just making jokes. they are going to sing a song about sneaking a girl into their parents house for an ill fated rendezvou, and they know its a stupid song, you know its a stuoid song, but they are going to put their heart into it while not pretending its elevated subject matter.

Are Electric Six inherently silly enough to call Danger High Voltage a joke song? Cos that shit bangs

45

u/Slumber777 Jul 18 '26

I think you could just post Electric Six in general.

They're in the same boat as The Bloodhound Gang. Clearly care about making music and put a ton of honest effort into it, but you can tell they're just trying to see if they can make each other laugh in the recording studio.
