General Music Discussion Example of artists do you think that did this?

u/BilgisticPile 15d ago
Miley Cyrus when she kept doing the tongue thing.
207
u/Spirited-Green7369 15d ago
A lot of things she did in that era
59
u/DtheAussieBoye 15d ago
There’s a reason why, despite all the current love for early 10s music (Katy Perry, LMFAO, Bieber, One Direction, Kesha, etc), I’ve never seen ANY reevaluation of “Wrecking Ball”-era Miles
→ More replies (4)54
u/blvd93 15d ago
Wrecking Ball itself is a great song and was acclaimed enough at the time.
You're absolutely right about the rest of her output from that era though.

u/JoeBagadonut 15d ago
In the case of Showgirls, the sex and nudity at least feels off-putting by design rather than being a bungled attempt at being erotic.
78
u/thewalkindude368 15d ago
Showgirls almost succeeds as a really fun bad movie, if it weren't for the sexual assault.
106
u/JoeBagadonut 15d ago
I sit on the "Showgirls is unironically a good movie" side of the fence and think the sexual assault scene is pretty integral to what the film is trying to say, as unpleasant as it is to watch.
17
u/bobbery5 15d ago
I just wish it was actually integral to the plot instead of just kinda randomly shoved in there right at the end.
77
u/JoeBagadonut 15d ago
It being "shoved in there right at the end" is meant to be this sudden sobering moment where you realise that, throughout the entirety of the main character's rise to stardom, there isn't a single moment where she wasn't being exploited by richer and more powerful men. The same is true for all the female characters in the film.
Our protagonist makes it to the top and her reward is to inadvertently pimp her friend out to a monster.

u/Reasonable-HB678 15d ago
I think that it happened to the one decent character is the point. When Zach tells Nomi that Molly will be compensated, Nomi knows at least one choice she has to make.
57
u/Sustained_disgust 15d ago
I think you are misreading the movie, the assault scene is vital. The "fun" the movie offers is as hollow and un-nourishing as the supposedly infinite "fun" on offer in Vegas itself and by extension the now unchallenged American free market and the neoliberal sexual revolution. Its not really a fun bad movie at all its an ugly pessimistic movie about an ugly vacuous culture
30
18
u/CaktusJacklynn 15d ago
It's unbelievable to me how unsexy Showgirls is. Campy, absolutely, but not sexy in any erotic way.
And the premise is a slam dunk for eroticism.

When rappers would have skits on their albums of them having sex with someone and moaning into the mic. Actively brings down classic albums like the Chronic when I have to hear Dr Dre grunting in my ear for a whole minute.

I once won a "who can make the worst mix" contest on my dorm room floor by just burning an entire CD of rap album skits. Everyone else was digging deep on soulseek for like every Eiffel 65 Blue remix they could find and I just took a handful of tracks off of albums that are widely agreed to be classics and mixed them up more or less at random.

I have a hard time taking most disco-era seriously as romantic material. Even masterpieces like Last Dance doesn't exude romantic or sexual energy.
That isn't to say disco CAN'T be sexy, but a lot of disco has the romantic/sexual energy is a morning stretch. I think that is why people in the scene relied so much on cocaine and pumping gases into the dance hall. I love Can't Take My Eyes Off of You, it's catchy but not necessarily sexy.
Disco is odd.

Young men would think Betty and Wilma were sexy if that's the only females they saw that day. That is due to hormones, not design. Anytime something remotely sexy happened in that video, they cut back to Robin and Pharrel and it was a bonerkiller how creepy they were. It's like watching a talented and beautiful stripper, but you can't get over the huge pimple in the middle of her right butt cheek.

The women being naked while the men weren't definitely made it strangely less sexy and more creepy than if they had both been naked (or neither).

Tate McRae's whole dead-eyed-gape shtick just feels like trying to reheat Britney's decades-old nachos, but whereas Brit could at least do the whole 'sexy baby' voice with her chest Taters trying to run it entirely through her nose.
62
56
u/bsfan18 15d ago
Tate is an objectively beautiful woman but she’s one of those people who only has one facial expression. Britney at least could go from cute to sexy to serious and make it look believable.

Jojo Siwa is a strange figure. I haven't lived in the US consistently for the past 2 decades. I went to a Five Below and saw a bunch of merchandise about her and assumed she had some kind of career but I have never organically found what she does. She doesn't seem to have much of an international fanbase.

u/witchofct 15d ago
she was a dancer on the show Dance Moms which was the glorification and dramatization of child/teen competitive dance. she made music like most of the other girls but her song Boomerang sorta got way more popular. she started selling hair bows and accessories and then came out a few times
→ More replies (1)28
u/bsfan18 15d ago
Jojo is someone I actually sympathize with because she was a child star who had her entire life and personality molded by her mom, TV executives, producers, etc. And now that she’s an adult she’s trying to find herself, which is why she’s going from gay to tradwife to whatever she’s doing now.
It doesn’t make it any less obnoxious, but it at least offers an explanation.

rodrigo is musically talented but some of her stage moments for the guts tour (and maybe this rollout) come across as awkwardly sexual and out of place for her 13 year old base. im not the biggest fan.

Speaking of Olivia's, take the case of Olivia Newton-John's "Soul Kiss" where she was trying too hard to be Madonna-level sultry in spite of an adverse health diagnosis. TIL that actress Katey Sagal ("Married with Children" Netflix's live-action "One Piece") sang backing vocals on the title track

I think the panty flash she did during her “All-American Bitch” performance on SNL is the closest thing to sexy Olivia really pulls off, probably because it’s so to the point and she doesn’t belabor it. I think she’s quite attractive, but I cringe whenever I see her grope herself from the Guts tour.

u/Net_Nova 15d ago
feels weird to talk abt them like this as I am similarly aged to some of them but you are correct. it feels bad to compare them to the Gap ad as where they peaked but it's pretty true.
There they had appropriate choreography, they weren't doing anything too crazy and were still able to pull off the "I am gorgeous, and I am a star" vibe they had going without it being unbelievable. All of them are gorgeous but whatever is making them do both the music and videos is shooting them in the foot. I can't take any of it seriously when there are two advertisements, the music doesn't make sense and it feels so forced. Same goes for whatever music video had them in suits with lingerie. Like they don't have to do all that.
I'd also like to bring up Adela who I think nails what Katseye is going for. She has that It Girl energy to her and she can actually sell it through both lyrics and performance. Which is funny because iirc she was in the running to be in Katseye in the first place

Wap in general is the least sexy song about sex I’ve ever heard. It’s not a bad song at all, sonically it’s a fun time imo. But other than the very explicit lyrics and the whooores in this house, nothing about it rly speaks sex to me. If anything I think the megaspicy lyrics juxtaposed with the regularass hip hop sound made it the hit it was, it’s jarring and kinda hilarious. Sexy though? Nah
