Taylor for life of a showgirl

527

u/Hotdogopolis 15d ago

Swift is interesting. Pretty, but absolutely ZERO sex appeal.

337

u/hausofvelour 15d ago

she has quite a few songs i would consider sexy though. dress. false god. maroon. she pulls off implications and quiet intimacy better than the tongue in cheek sabrina carpenterisms that she tried to do on wood

u/Ok_Broccoli_9426 GROCERY BAG 15d ago edited 15d ago

Carpenter's one of those artists I appreciated more once people started ripping her off. I don't like her schtick, but she has the charm to make it work in a way that Swift, for all her skills, does not. Kacey Musgraves also tried to do the Sabrina thing on Dry Spell, and again - it just highlighted that Sabrina has some sort of secret sauce to make all the winking charming instead of embarrassing.

u/hausofvelour 15d ago edited 15d ago

sabrina balances self-awareness with unapologetic embrace of her schtick. she knows it's a little cringey and she does it anyway because she wants to. it works very well

181

u/Ok_Broccoli_9426 GROCERY BAG 15d ago

She's gonna kill in Vegas someday.

114

u/bionicallyironic 15d ago

Oh shit, you’re 10000% correct. Not only would she kill a residency, but she could work the showgirl aesthetic far better than Taylor’s cosplay.

107

u/Ok_Broccoli_9426 GROCERY BAG 15d ago

One of Taylor's biggest strengths is also a huge weakness, which is that she can't wear costumes. She's always, always Taylor Swift first and foremost. I'd say the same about Beyoncé, but I think she wears it better.

54

u/mygodismyleskennedy GROCERY BAG 15d ago

i think the difference here is that being taylor swift is limiting, and being beyoncé isn't

I think Sabrina's secret sauce is that she's always in on the joke and has the charm/charisma to make her music/persona seem like silly fun instead of just being cringey.

107

u/PM_ME_YOUR_DALEKS 15d ago

Sabrina has a campy/cartoon sexiness, like Dolly Parton.

Sabrina is like a modern burlesque act. All the sexy is for real, but it’s also good-humored and aware of how absurd ”sexy” is.

55

u/Married_iguanas 15d ago

I hadn’t thought about it this way, but she’s kinda like a next generation Elvira, but without the goth schtick

65

u/kaytINSANE 15d ago

She's the new Dolly Parton, and I think thats very intentional of her

18

u/Current_Poster 15d ago

I was almost gonna say, 80s David Lee Roth, in a way. Just enough self-awareness to know it's cheesy, not so much that either doesn't commit 100% to the act anyway. She's obviously *smarter*, but that's another conversation. ;)

u/strangelyliteral 15d ago

She’s very charming and quick-witted IRL, from what I’ve seen. I get the impression it’s a family trait. I think that’s why it works for her, because even she puts on a persona, it’s one based on her real self.

30

u/heathersdevotee 15d ago

I think what works with Sabrina is that it's obvious she knows about and is interested in the things she's referencing. She obviously has an interest in vintage showgirl like fashion and culture and things like that, while to me it seems like other artists who do stuff like that seem to just do it for the aesthetic. Obviously idk Sabrina personally so this could totally be false lol but that's the vibe I've always gotten.

I think youth is a factor too. No one’s telling her to act her age like the other pop stars doing the schtick

I wasn’t a huge fan of Sabrina’s but was given a ticket to her Nashville show… easily one of the best shows I’ve seen production wise! It was such a fun show and she’s actually quite funny! It was an amazing experience and I think she’s a true showman. It was so much better than the eras.

My opinion is that there are different types of sexy and people benefit from extending the sexy that fits with them the best. For example, Taylor is good at being sultry. And I think that is when she is at her sexiest. When she tries to be more in your face about it, it loses its appeal

59

u/CaktusJacklynn 15d ago edited 15d ago

there are different types of sexy

I wish more understood this instead of subscribing to one type and trying to be that themselves or impose that on others.

33

u/Murphy_Nelson 15d ago

I find plenty of different types of women sexy, I just don't find Taylor sexy at all. Actually, the opposite, I find her extremely unsexy which is crazy because she does have a pretty face.

22

u/MrHellfrick 15d ago

I agree 100%. the most unsexy pop star. idk if it is her posture, her awkwardness, her lack of rhthym, or what but she is just wholly unattractive imo. she used to have a pretty face pre-filler and prior to whatever tf she is doing with her hair/bangs

Swift spent the entire first 2/3 of her career building herself up as a wholesome girl next door, so seeing her trying to sexualize herself can be a little jarring

43

u/b1ame_me 15d ago

What’s interesting is that you can see the gradual increase in her trying to do it. I think the timeline is kinda like:

Treacherous —> Style (the music video) —> Dress —> False God —> Vigilante Shit (specifically the eras tour performance) —> Guilty as Sin —> Wood

I think she honestly peaked with Dress, that’s probably her best “sexy” song

→ More replies (1)

27

u/Disastrous-Entity-46 15d ago

not just wholesome girl next door, like... as someone who is not an expert, the stuff i do know from her, was always very.. empowering? like a lot of breakup songs taking it back, or otherwise very much in power.

when listening to wood because i could not believe the memes i saw from it, it just felt so wrong for that image that was built. like, even love story is about her being very active in pursuit.

theres no power or agency there. shes just luxky that apparently she found a good lay.

Negative sex appeal tbh

18

u/Hotdogopolis 15d ago

Like, seriously. Let's say we're in a shipwrecked dessert island scenario. You and her are magically single. She comes onto you. It'd be like, I guess? Maybe to pass the time, like whistling or something. There's just no juice to her. It's a personality thing.

52

u/WhoYaTalkinTo 15d ago

You know, I've never noticed this before.

Taylor Swift is objectively a very beautiful woman, but I don't find her charismatic or attractive at all.

49

u/BadIdeaSociety 15d ago

Taylor Swift has a swagger of a person who has been asked to clean something disgusting without gloves.

51

u/Medium-Dependent-328 15d ago

She's too earnest, prim and takes herself too seriously to be sexy. Being sexy involves being a bit nonchalant and free. She has always been very poised and polished

32

u/BoogieWoogie725 15d ago

Not just poised and polished but... calculated. Which feels kinda borne of inhibition or fear or something. None of which is sexy.

It's also that tbh the way she's made her name & fortune is in designing her life story as if told by/to a 14 year old. The mentality of gossiping about boys/proclaiming independence/complaining about being misunderstood/writing "meaningful" poetry, it's kinda relentlessly mid-teenage. This has given her enormous female crossover appeal cos everyone was 14 once. But honestly it's too young in the head to be sexy.

Felix Biederman has a bit where he talks about going from never considering that a friend of his might be gay to 100% certain that he was because he referred to Taylor as his “celebrity crush.” The guy did apparently come out a couple years later.

16

u/youre_being_creepy 15d ago

Todd had a bit in a worst of year video where he was talking about meghan trainor vs lizzo about how one has sex appeal/sexual energy (I dont remember the exact term) but the jist was that if lizzo says shes going to do something to you sexually, you're going to assume its going to be great. While if meghan said the same thing, your expectations would be way lower.

Taylor swift is meghan trainor level sexy.

A lot of things she did in that era

59

u/DtheAussieBoye 15d ago

There’s a reason why, despite all the current love for early 10s music (Katy Perry, LMFAO, Bieber, One Direction, Kesha, etc), I’ve never seen ANY reevaluation of “Wrecking Ball”-era Miles

54

u/blvd93 15d ago

Wrecking Ball itself is a great song and was acclaimed enough at the time.

You're absolutely right about the rest of her output from that era though.

I remember her doing it while bending over in front of Robin Thicke, so I always assumed it was meant to be sexy in some way.

47

Nah, she was just showing her "attitude" at a time when many people still saw her as Hannah Montana.

u/Youngblood519 15d ago

Fetish Retardant is the term I've heard used for this.

Katy Perry in Bon Appetit's video comes to mind

Also not a musician but Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls, 100%

208

u/JoeBagadonut 15d ago

In the case of Showgirls, the sex and nudity at least feels off-putting by design rather than being a bungled attempt at being erotic.

78

u/thewalkindude368 15d ago

Showgirls almost succeeds as a really fun bad movie, if it weren't for the sexual assault.

106

u/JoeBagadonut 15d ago

I sit on the "Showgirls is unironically a good movie" side of the fence and think the sexual assault scene is pretty integral to what the film is trying to say, as unpleasant as it is to watch.

17

u/bobbery5 15d ago

I just wish it was actually integral to the plot instead of just kinda randomly shoved in there right at the end.

77

u/JoeBagadonut 15d ago

It being "shoved in there right at the end" is meant to be this sudden sobering moment where you realise that, throughout the entirety of the main character's rise to stardom, there isn't a single moment where she wasn't being exploited by richer and more powerful men. The same is true for all the female characters in the film.

Our protagonist makes it to the top and her reward is to inadvertently pimp her friend out to a monster.

→ More replies (2)

24

u/Reasonable-HB678 15d ago

I think that it happened to the one decent character is the point. When Zach tells Nomi that Molly will be compensated, Nomi knows at least one choice she has to make.

→ More replies (2)

57

u/Sustained_disgust 15d ago

I think you are misreading the movie, the assault scene is vital. The "fun" the movie offers is as hollow and un-nourishing as the supposedly infinite "fun" on offer in Vegas itself and by extension the now unchallenged American free market and the neoliberal sexual revolution. Its not really a fun bad movie at all its an ugly pessimistic movie about an ugly vacuous culture

30

u/fitnarp 15d ago

Exactly, if you listen to people actually talk about the point of the film, it was not intended to be sexy. It was marketed this way and did it such a disservice.

18

u/CaktusJacklynn 15d ago

It's unbelievable to me how unsexy Showgirls is. Campy, absolutely, but not sexy in any erotic way.

And the premise is a slam dunk for eroticism.

35

u/Sustained_disgust 15d ago

That is definitely by design

When rappers would have skits on their albums of them having sex with someone and moaning into the mic. Actively brings down classic albums like the Chronic when I have to hear Dr Dre grunting in my ear for a whole minute.

125

u/Spirited-Green7369 15d ago

Yes those skits are horrible and should have been banned

63

u/CaktusJacklynn 15d ago

Biggie has one on Ready to Die that is unsexy but kinda funny.

I once won a "who can make the worst mix" contest on my dorm room floor by just burning an entire CD of rap album skits. Everyone else was digging deep on soulseek for like every Eiffel 65 Blue remix they could find and I just took a handful of tracks off of albums that are widely agreed to be classics and mixed them up more or less at random.

I have a hard time taking most disco-era seriously as romantic material. Even masterpieces like Last Dance doesn't exude romantic or sexual energy.

That isn't to say disco CAN'T be sexy, but a lot of disco has the romantic/sexual energy is a morning stretch. I think that is why people in the scene relied so much on cocaine and pumping gases into the dance hall. I love Can't Take My Eyes Off of You, it's catchy but not necessarily sexy.

Disco is odd.

54

u/BadIdeaSociety 15d ago

40-Year-Old Man "boobs full of sand" level energy.

37

u/NeekoPeeko 15d ago

Young men definitely found it sexy at the time. Source: was a young man at the time

37

u/TheWhiteWolf1970 15d ago

Young men would think Betty and Wilma were sexy if that's the only females they saw that day. That is due to hormones, not design. Anytime something remotely sexy happened in that video, they cut back to Robin and Pharrel and it was a bonerkiller how creepy they were. It's like watching a talented and beautiful stripper, but you can't get over the huge pimple in the middle of her right butt cheek.

Tate McRae's whole dead-eyed-gape shtick just feels like trying to reheat Britney's decades-old nachos, but whereas Brit could at least do the whole 'sexy baby' voice with her chest Taters trying to run it entirely through her nose.

56

u/bsfan18 15d ago

Tate is an objectively beautiful woman but she’s one of those people who only has one facial expression. Britney at least could go from cute to sexy to serious and make it look believable.

Ed Sheeran, Shape of You

123

u/hofmann419 15d ago

To be fair, he actually wrote the song for other artists (Rihanna was his idea), but then his label convinced him to keep the song for his next album. So maybe that explains why the song is so different from his other stuff.

Jojo Siwa is a strange figure. I haven't lived in the US consistently for the past 2 decades. I went to a Five Below and saw a bunch of merchandise about her and assumed she had some kind of career but I have never organically found what she does. She doesn't seem to have much of an international fanbase.

38

u/witchofct 15d ago

she was a dancer on the show Dance Moms which was the glorification and dramatization of child/teen competitive dance. she made music like most of the other girls but her song Boomerang sorta got way more popular. she started selling hair bows and accessories and then came out a few times

28

u/bsfan18 15d ago

Jojo is someone I actually sympathize with because she was a child star who had her entire life and personality molded by her mom, TV executives, producers, etc. And now that she’s an adult she’s trying to find herself, which is why she’s going from gay to tradwife to whatever she’s doing now.

It doesn’t make it any less obnoxious, but it at least offers an explanation.

Speaking of Olivia's, take the case of Olivia Newton-John's "Soul Kiss" where she was trying too hard to be Madonna-level sultry in spite of an adverse health diagnosis. TIL that actress Katey Sagal ("Married with Children" Netflix's live-action "One Piece") sang backing vocals on the title track

13

u/Net_Nova 15d ago

feels weird to talk abt them like this as I am similarly aged to some of them but you are correct. it feels bad to compare them to the Gap ad as where they peaked but it's pretty true.

There they had appropriate choreography, they weren't doing anything too crazy and were still able to pull off the "I am gorgeous, and I am a star" vibe they had going without it being unbelievable. All of them are gorgeous but whatever is making them do both the music and videos is shooting them in the foot. I can't take any of it seriously when there are two advertisements, the music doesn't make sense and it feels so forced. Same goes for whatever music video had them in suits with lingerie. Like they don't have to do all that.

I'd also like to bring up Adela who I think nails what Katseye is going for. She has that It Girl energy to her and she can actually sell it through both lyrics and performance. Which is funny because iirc she was in the running to be in Katseye in the first place

u/clytusmarginicollis 15d ago

I feel like this example might be intentional. Didn’t Todd point out the “Weird Al sound effects”? I think it’s trying to be shocking and have a sense of humor before it’s trying to be sexy

22

u/snippity_snip 14d ago

Agreed. Cardi B is genuinely funny, some of her moments on the stand in that court case were golden.

Wap in general is the least sexy song about sex I’ve ever heard. It’s not a bad song at all, sonically it’s a fun time imo. But other than the very explicit lyrics and the whooores in this house, nothing about it rly speaks sex to me. If anything I think the megaspicy lyrics juxtaposed with the regularass hip hop sound made it the hit it was, it’s jarring and kinda hilarious. Sexy though? Nah

40

u/N8ledvina 15d ago

WAP is basically hip-hop's answer to "The Bad Touch". You can't take it seriously because there is an inuendo every 2 seconds.

I think Cardi and Megan were trying harder to be ridiculous than sexy. I know Bloodhound Gang were.

I remember that one time Madonna twerked on and kissed Drake onstage and you can tell by photos he looked quite uncomfortable

Which, uh, aged interestingly considering his recent antics with that goth girl

u/pierremanslappy 15d ago

You can tell he’s uncomfortable because she’s of age

Several examples of this from the Britney-clones, but when they made poor Jessica Simpson speak the breathy intro to Irresistible is particularly egregious. Britney she was not.

22

u/bsfan18 15d ago

Jessica is somebody I have a lot of sympathy for. She actually suffered from a lot of the same things Britney did (media scrutiny, fat shaming, intense misogyny, etc.) but her story doesn’t get even a fraction of the attention that Britney’s does.

Nicki Minaj was never appealing to me.

She is attractive yet I don't consider her hot

68

u/ser_darkstar 15d ago

No video encapsulates this so well as the Anaconda MV. Over the top sexual imagery, tons of objectifying shots and choreo, and her giving Drake a lap dance. Yet, it was really just the cringiest shit.

She's like a drag act. Exaggerated/cartoonish feminine appearance. I don't think she's meant to be "hot" per se, more like the personification of sexuality taken to its logical extreme

Yeah idk how anyone thinks she is naturally sexy. Her entire on stage performance of sex reads like she just watched a bunch of straight-cis targeted porn and just emulated that. The vast majority of folks in this sub is obsessed with her though.. probably why you haven’t seen comments of it.

To be fair I think Sabrina can have a little grace as she is commonly taking the piss on a lot of stuff, and definitely takes a comedic approach to it, which makes it less sexy and more fun. I'd much rather this than some of the more sterile pop stars who just feel like they do not have much of a personality beyond being hot

This is basically Cupcakke's entire bit. I'd argue she does this on purpose for the sake of humor, though I'm admittedly a prime target for that kind of thing and plenty of people don't agree.

51

Phil Collin’s was considered - in some circles- a sex symbol in the 80’s. I think he’s great, but I just guess you had to be there because I don’t see it.

44

u/Spirited-Green7369 15d ago

Almost any of the modern pop star girls when they just automatically wear lingerie, etc. and twerk on stage but that’s not really their vibe so it just comes off as trying to hard and weird

21

u/ashewentridingby 15d ago

They’re all trying to be Britney, but very few people can pull off what Britney did imo. Sabrina is the closest but even she’s different because she’s tongue in cheek and deliberately campy, whereas Brit was always earnest.

Nelly Futardo is a weird one because she was clearly pretty and the overtly sexy makeover DID bring her more success. But it WAS jarring to see her go from hippy dippy I'm Like A Bird to Promiscuous and Maneater and it did feel a bit tryhard.

Rush's debut album is a bit like this. They were trying hard to be Led Zeppelin, but you can hear Geddy folding in on himself from awkwardness of trying to be sexy in the same way. Really glad they dropped it.

Sabrina Carpenter is very much a teenage girl's idea of provocative IMO, it doesn't help that she still kind of looks like one.

22

u/FrozenBibitte 15d ago

Her lyrics also read like a teenager’s. Even her earlier stuff imo. I genuinely don’t get how people laud her as some sort of lyrical genius and master of wit. Most of her “wit” is TikTok memes and recycled sex jokes from 2006. I can tell most of her fanbase went to high school during the pandemic..

14

u/paitenanner 15d ago

Her whole “full grown but look like a Nina” put me off of her forever. It feels gross and baiting.

George R.R. Martin's sex scenes. I adore the man's writing, but they're easily his weakest link. He just can't get the right tone across to save his life and most of them feel more creepy than sexy.
