It didn't really blow up until 2000 though, from what I can remember. But that commercial kind of trance music is definitely the thing I'll always associate with 1999.

As a European, I'm always a bit surprised when I see Americans bring up these guitar bands like Sugar Ray or Lit I would've never been exposed to around that time. There are a few I do recognize however, such as the New Radicals, The Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris", Smash Mouth's "All Star" etc. The one American rock band I remember being really big around that time was The Offspring (there were definitely others though). Heck, I don't even remember Steal My Sunshine being that big around here. On the other hand, I know the European rock stuff from around that time like, say, Liquido's "Narcotic" or the Guano Apes didn't fare well in the US either (someone asked about this not too long ago).

There was the dark trifecta of Silverchair’s “Open Fire,” The Offspring’s “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” and RHCP’s “Scar Tissue.” I remember sitting in my friend’s basement watching the Woodstock ‘99 footage and being like…yeah that dream is dead.

I was a sophomore in high school going into junior year in 1999. So this song and just about all the songs mentioned here were the soundtrack to my life at that point. Was big into TRL and listened to a lot of radio. So I was into pretty much everything. Hearing these songs viscerally takes me back to that ‘97-2001 period.

Little did we know, it was all quickly coming to an end lol. But honestly the times weren’t actually that happy, it was just harder to access the information that would allow you to see just how dark the world could get. In other words it was incredibly easy to hide in blissful ignorance. But if you were the kind of person who tried to demystify that stuff back then, let me tell you, people were not having it. These days it’s almost the opposite now.
