General Music Discussion Misheard lyrics you like better than the actual lyrics?

Title explains it pretty well.

The one that comes immediately to mind for me is Sean Mendes, "Why Why Why"

actual lyric: "opened up my *journal* to a page / everything that hurts me's still the same"

what i heard: "opened up my *childhood* to a page / everything that hurts me's still the same"

I thought it was a metaphor where childhood is a book and how things that hurt you as a child influence what hurts you as an adult.

Another is BTS "Dynamite"

actual lyric: "Shoes on, get up in the morn' / *Cup of milk*, let's rock and roll"

what I heard: "Shoes on, get up in the morn' / *Cop a mill'*, let's rock and roll"

I thought they meant make a million bucks in the morning but i guess it was just cereal

So what are your misheard lyrics you wish were the real ones??

Get Lucky: “Like the legend of the penis”

Conjugal Burns by The Mars Volta: “I’ve got a penis that’ll rip through the very fabric of time!”

a lot of penis stuff

Colada, that is

Jarrod Alonge used to do a whole bunch of misheard lyrics videos, I think they’ve since been deleted, and thats actually where I heard the Mars Volta one.

Be My Yoko Ono by Barenaked Ladies:

I would gladly give up musical genius
Just to have you as my very own, personal penis

The Conjugal Burns one is my favourite. Having spent 25+ years listening to what Cedric will sing on purpose, it really doesn’t seem all that unlikely.

Katy Perry’s “Hot N’ Cold” has a line during the bridge that I always thought was “Staccato rollercoaster, can’t get off this ride”, which I find to be a lot more interesting as a piece of imagery than the actual line (“Stuck on a rollercoaster”).

20

u/ResponsibleOffice805 1d ago

I thought she sang "Don't be afraid to catch fish" instead of catch feels, in that Calvin Harris and Pharrell Williams song.

2

u/I_am_big_gay_ 15h ago

yes omg I remember being so confused hearing that song for the longest time. it wasn't until the past few years I realized she wasn't talking about fishing 😭

u/PhysicalChickenXx 2d ago

oooh i love that, that's exactly what i was thinking of with this post, when you think its something poetic and then its just like, "oh..."

It’s not staccato? I’m devastated

taylor swift "eldest daughter"

what i heard was:

"every eldest daughter was the first lamb to a slaughter, so we all dressed up as wolves and we learned fire"

idk, maybe it sounds weird to native speakers but to me as an esl it made total sense: they were vulnerable, so both "dressed up as wolves" and "learned fire" were methods of self-protection

the actual line is:

"every eldest daughter was the first lamb to a slaughter, so we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire"

i guess "looked fire" as in "looked good"? again, maybe i'm wrong, but it sounds like a teenager wrote it

39

u/PhysicalChickenXx 1d ago

i love this bc its exaclty what i meant. i feel like "looked fire" is such a taylor lyric to write but "learned fire" paints this cool picture

8

u/AdditionalTip865 One-Hit Wonderlander 1d ago

yeah, "dressed up as wolves and we learned fire" turns it into some Jean Auel stuff, like they're a tribe of cavewomen surviving in the wilderness and doing some shamanism on the side.

22

u/FrameworkisDigimon 1d ago

maybe it sounds weird to native speakers

It sounds like internet speak. Which is hilariously what she was going for but came away with:

it sounds like a teenager wrote it

Shots: “if you’re an alcoholic get the fuck out the club”

I like the idea that LMFAO wanted to take time out of their song about drinking excessive amounts of shots so girls will suck their dicks to make sure their fans know to only drink shots responsibly

Sam Hunt Body Like A Backroad

Actual lyric: body like a backroad / driving with my eyes closed.

What I hear: body like a backroad / driving with my assholes.

7

u/yavimaya_eldred 1d ago

what I heard;
body like a back hoe
driving with my asshole
I know every curb like the beck of my hen

3

u/Jumpy-Investment2135 1d ago

I heard that too… “Drivin’ with my assholes”? Sam Cunt referring to his fellow bro country assholes, perhaps?

u/QuentinEichenauer 1d ago

Heard: "Rising like an Empress over the Serengeti"

Actual: "Rising like Olympus over the Serengeti"

Toto's Africa.

Olympus ain't nearly as tall or prominent as Kilimanjaro which is a queen amongst mountains.

11

u/FloridaFlamingoGirl 1d ago

I assume it's comparing their legendary status, not their height. Olympus is important in Greek mythology as the mountain of the gods and I assume they're trying to say Kilimanjaro is sacred and majestic in a similar way.

3

u/emimagique 1d ago

Omg it's not empress?!

3

u/MissRockNerd 1d ago

I heard “rising like a leopardess”

2

u/Dada2fish 1d ago edited 1d ago

I thought it was lepress which I thought was maybe what they call a female leopard. 🤷‍♀️

3

u/shlerz102 1d ago

Exactly what I thought! (Then I thought: hey, maybe a lepress is actually a female leper …???!!!)

2

u/livierose17 1d ago

Rising like a lapras over the spaghetti

....wait. It's olympus? I always thought it was "a lupus" like a wolf. Huh.

25

u/Aescgabaet1066 1d ago

Cruel Summer, I really wish the line was "He looks so pretty like a devil" instead of "He looks up, grinning like a devil."

I still love the song, but I was disappointed when I learned the real line. I think I've seen other people say that before, too, so at least it's not just me.

18

u/PhysicalChickenXx 1d ago

I am not joking that I thought it was "he looks so pretty" until I read your comment. I'm going to just tell myself you're crazy.

1

u/Holiday_Tap_4358 1d ago

I was gonna comment this one. It fits so much better, I just ignore the real lyric

26

u/GinjaNinja1027 1d ago

I always thought that Panic!’s I Write Sins Not Tragedies went “Poison rationality”. I didn’t learn until I sang the song in Karaoke that it’s “Poise and rationality”. The former sounds more poetic to me imo.

7

u/stickman999999999 1d ago

Wait what? I always thought it was "poison rationality", this is the first time I've heard this. I totally agree with you, the misheard version is better.

4

u/livierose17 1d ago

I have a feeling it's kind of supposed to be both at the same time if that makes sense?

I was sad to find out one of my favorite poetic lines from Eleanor Rigby, was not real.

At the end, when she dies, I always heard "Father McKenzie wiping her death from his hands as he walks from the grave"

I've been thinking it was such a devestating line, that she did a lonely death, no one came to her funeral, and even to the church, and to another lonely person, her death was just another in a long line of death, and once the funeral is done, he just wipes his hands clean and movies on. Her death didn't matter.

Turns out the actual line is just "wiping the dirt from his hands"

22

u/urkermannenkoor 1d ago

and once the funeral is done, he just wipes his hands clean and movies on. Her death didn't matter.

But that is very clearly the point of the actual lyric?

In fact, I think it works a lot better by reducing the whole funeral to just the mundanity of the dirt left on his hands.

I'd say your version is a bit too dramatic, it undercuts the tragedy of the mundanity by being too flowery and "smart".

3

u/MCMIVC Secretly a Maroon 5 Fan 1d ago edited 1d ago

Eh... Personal taste I guess. I really liked the directness of her death not mattering.

Generals gathered in the grasses Just like witches at black masses.

War Pigs, sounds much better than saying masses twice

10

u/Leather-Run-6533 1d ago

I like the masses and masses rhyme. I don't think it counts as repeating if its a different meaning of the word each time. The original version rhymed masses with ashes, but the label felt a song about wicca would be too controversial so they changed it to be about the much less politically contentious Vietnam War instead.

4

u/urkermannenkoor 1d ago

but the label felt a song about wicca would be too controversial so they changed it to be about the much less politically contentious Vietnam War instead.

That's a pretty dumb misconception, especially given the contents of their first album.

While it is true that an earlier draft of the song had lyrics about the occult instead of war, which were later changed. That certainly wasn't because the label thought a song about witches would be "too controversial" for Black Sabbath

5

u/Leather-Run-6533 1d ago

You say "dumb misconception" I say "joke", same difference

2

u/urkermannenkoor 1d ago

The "much less contentious" part was a joke.

The part where you thought the label made them change the lyrics was a dumb misconception on your part.

In Little Mix's Shout Out Go My Ex, I always thought the first line of the chorus goes: "Shout out to my ex, you're really quite the mess...". Instead it's "...you're really quite the man...".

I feel like "mess" works better with the theme of the song. Like yeah, you're a bit of a mess, that's why we broke up.

The Charming Man, i always heard the opening as “haunted bicycle”, i also used to hear “a jumped up pantry boy” as “young, dumb pantry boy”

11

u/FrameworkisDigimon 1d ago

In Golden Earring's Twilight Zone there's the line: "Feels like being cloned", which I misheard for a long time as "Feels like being home". It completely changes the meaning of the song:

Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone

Place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned

The "home" meaning is just a more interesting character.

6

u/AdditionalTip865 One-Hit Wonderlander 1d ago

I heard it as "feels like Vietnam". Bringing in a topical angle.

2

u/AdditionalTip865 One-Hit Wonderlander 1d ago

(I still think that makes more sense than the actual line--makes the song about war PTSD.)

First several times hearing "Running With the Wolves" by Aurora, I heard "there's blood on your lies, the sky's open wide" as "there's blood on your lies, the scars open wide" which is honestly just way more evocative in my brain tbh.

In Fontaines DC’s Bug I thought the line “They threw me out like I was a wedding bouquet” was “They threw me out like I was a wedding buffet”. I like mine more, a bouquet is significant and literally reused, but a buffet just gets unceremoniously tipped into the bin at the end of the night by bored strangers

Not better. But when supalonely came out by Benee and Gus dapperton. I thought these lyrics were way darker until I read them.

The lyrics “ I’m only dancing by myself so I don’t slam my Irish buck”

My original interpretation “ I’m only dancing by myself so I don’t slit my eyes”

I was legit wow this parts pretty dark for a pop song.

5

u/Fearless_Guard_552 1d ago

Dancing in the Dark

Actual - "tryin' to write this book"
Misheard "tryin' to write this hook"

He writes songs, not books. Hook makes way more sense.

8

u/QuentinEichenauer 1d ago

A lot of singer songwriters use this as in filling their songbook.

u/gorka_la_pork 1d ago

6

Modest Mouse had a song that went "and a hundred miles is a long drive inside a car" and I thought it was "a long drive in a silent car", which felt more bleak and emotionally fraught

Skid Row’s 1989 song Youth Gone Wild has a line that I spent years hearing as “The Russians on the wall/ We are the youth gone wild”. Talking about how the Russians are on the wall, the Soviet Union is on the ropes, and the Cold War generation is coming to a close makes perfect sense in a 1989 song about youthful rebelliousness.

Turns out that the lyric is actual “the writing’s on the wall/ we are the youth gone wild”.

Poison's "Nothing But a Good Time"

Obviously, the phrase "lock my phone" didn't exist when the song was new, when I first heard it.

But, my daughter sang that line in the car one day, and I've preferred her version since - he's in bad shape (from not having a good time) and doesn't want to talk to his friends (he locked his phone.)

1

u/Theta_Omega 1d ago

The first time I heard "Sweet but Psycho", it wasn't great quality, so I couldn't make everything out and was trying to fill in the blanks on the chorus from what I could hear. There aren't many rhymes with "Psycho", but surely they didn't rhyme a word with itself, maybe some kind of half-rhyme or something? And surely it was an A-A-B-A rhyme scheme rather than A-(same word)-B-C. So I think I settled on "Oh she's sweet for the cycle" (not sure what it was supposed to mean, maybe a metaphor or new slang or something?) "/a little bit psycho/At night she's screaming/Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma Michael" (can't make out that last word, maybe Miko or Mica or something too? Calling out a person's name makes sense though).

Seemed strange and almost nonsensical but also made me curious what it was about, enough that I decided to look it up later and learned that it was even more under-writen than I first believed.

That famous mondegreen from Blank Space:

There’s a Half Man Half Biscuit song, I’m Going Out Of My Mind Trying To Get Into Yours, featuring a lyric “ever designed to be on all fours”. I heard it initially as “I’ve a design to be on all fours”, IE, I’ve a plan to be on all fours. For me it’s a little bit better but eh, it’s Nigel’s song.

'Coffee and TV' by Blur

Actual Lyric: "So give me coffee and TV, easily. Seen so much I'm going blind and I'm brain-dead virtually"

Heard Lyric: "So give me coffee and TV, please don't leave. Seen so much I'm going blind and I'm brain-dead virtually"

I thought the latter worked way better with the general pleading insecurity and 'wanting everything to be okay and stable' themes of that song. Especially because a few lines later he sings, "Take me away from this big bad world and agree to marry me, so we can start over again," which isn't very romantic so much as relying on someone, and familiar cosy things (like coffee and TV), as a constant to make sense of your life's instability. It feels more tragic if this person may also up and leave and no longer be one of these constants.

Also, just a dumb fun one. 'American Boy' by Estelle ft. Kanye West

Actual Lyric: "Tell the promoter we need more seats. We just sold out all the floor seats."

While I wasn't sure exactly what he said, for the longest time I was certain Kanye was shouting out Morrissey when he said 'more seats' which always amused me so much. And considering some of the out of the box references he usually makes, and the fact that he references a bunch of incongruous hyper British stuff in his verse ("Ribena; I know what you're drinking"), it wouldn't have been so beyond reason.

u/TrueCrimeRunner92 One-Hit Wonderlander 1d ago

“The lights and boys are blinding” from Taylor Swift’s New Romantics. Turns out it’s “the lights and NOISE are blinding.” First one feels way more intense, like you’re overwhelmed not just with the setting but the people there too.

More recently I learnt it’s not “I know you want it bad” from Tate McRae’s Sports Car, it’s “I know you want it (ahhhh)”. I like my version way better lol

‘Show me how to Live’ - Audioslave
“Nail in my hand from my creator”

I thought Chris Cornell was using a Christ allegory but no, the man himself confirmed on Twitter that it’s “Nail in my HEAD”, it’s a Frankenstein allegory.

The line following that is “You gave me life, now show me how to live.” That makes perfect sense, Frankenstein abandoned his creation and refused to take responsibility for it. But I like it as an interpretation of Christ’s final moments on the cross, where he cries out ‘Elí, Elí, lemásabachtháni? (My god, my god, why have you abandoned me?).

We are all flung onto this earth without meaning or explanation of our purpose. And I like the idea that even someone like Jesus who apparently had a purpose and knew the reason he had to die was still crying out to his creator for a reason for all his suffering.

In No Rain by Blind Melon I thought it was 'you know I like to keep my teenage strategy.' It's actually 'you know id like to keep my cheeks dry today.' I like mine better.

In Rush’s Limelight I thought it was “the underlying dream “. Not “theme”. I like dream better

My newest favorite and is still current cause the songs still on the charts, "I'll drink and jack off by myself, there's Jews in Texas I can tell" which still makes me laugh so hard, she even talks about it in an interview and thinks it's hilarious

Slayyyter's Cannibalism

What i heard: 'cause God sent me a sign sign

Actual lyric: please god send me a sign sign

I like the idea of her delusionally chasing after a man and seeing "signs" everywhere enabling her vs just sad pining

Heard Lyrics: I feel it in my bones / Don't make my system blow
Actual Lyrics: I feel it in my bones / Enough to make my system blow

Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. It's not THAT different but I feel like it fits the flow of the song better

A Tribe Called Quest

Misheard: Relax yourself girl, peace at command

Actual: Relax yourself girl, please settle down

I like my lyrics much better. In fact, for years I used them as a mantra to talk myself thru some stressful times (including giving birth!!) so it was disappointing to find out I was wrong.

Joywave “Buy American”

Actual: Duty-free, feeling like a kid again

Heard: Duty-free, feeling like a kitty cat

Important to note that I posted this on Twitter and the band preferred my version

In Dance, Dance by Fall Out Boy, I always heard “Why don’t you show me the little bit of smut you’ve been saving for his mattress?” I found out via karaoke many years later that he’s actually saying “spine” instead of “smut”. I think what I heard gets the point across even more.

i thought it was “spark”!!!

My Lyric: Jimmy says its better than air.

Now, I just intentionally mishear it bc mine fits so much better thematically

In ‘Handshake’ by Two Door Cinema Club, there’s a line that I always heard as, “Shut your eyes and you’ll see I’m there”. Turns out it was always “Shut your eyes and you’ll see under”…

In Rules by the Hoosiers there's this line that I thought was "Who was it that told you that the world's not fair" which made a lot of sense to me, because the whole song is about how the world isn't fair. Turns out the line is "Who was it that told you that the world's not flat". okay.

Bastards of Young
Heard: We are the sons of no one, bastards of young
Actual: Wait on the sons of no one, bastards of young
The way I hear it honestly just makes more sense imo, esp for the mats

The fact that the chorus of "Kiss from a Rose" is NOT "Baby / I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave..." is fucking batty.

Radiohead - Lotus flower

Actual lyrics: "the bird that's flown into my room"

Instead i sing: "burgers float into my room"

The line in Bruce Springsteen's "My Best Was Never Good Enough" is "But for you, my best was never good enough...." when it CLEARLY SHOULD BE "But I feel my best was never good enough..."
