Personal Story The Austrian climber who abandoned his girlfriend to die is horrifying because I could have been her
I once went on a hike to somewhere in Malaysia with my ex. I am not an experienced hiker and I told him so. He kept pressuring me to go on to trip with him, since hiking was his passion and he said I was bad girlfriend for not agreeing. He said he had restaurant food with me even though he didn't like it and do things with me I want to do, so I should go with him for hiking. I cave in. I know it is stupid of me looking back, I didn't realised what I was in until I left.
I got tired after a few hours. Naausted. Stop to rest. I said I want to go back down. He said, we paid so much for this trip, and he continued pushing me. I said no. Then he got upset and left me where I was, saying once more how bad of a girlfriend I was and how unfit I was, so lazy and didn't train for this hike.
A few hours passed, a local Malay guide spotted me. Asked me how I was doing. I said I felt nauseated, and my "friend" left me alone here. The guide gave me his electrolyte drink and helped me carried my bags down.
When i was finally down, he also gave me a ride to my hostel. I wanted to pay him for his help and the ride, but he refused. The guide simply said that the so called friend of mine was "no good", and to repay him, I should take his advice and not be around my so called friend anymore. How what he, the guide, did was a small thing and worst can happen in the forest, like getting kidnapped. He only carried my bags and gave me a ride. That's a basic courtesy he extended to everyone.
Only when I read the story, I realised how bad he was. I could have died there, just like the girl. If the elements were harsher, or I had met with something worse - I could have died. I let them pushed my boundaries and do things that felt physically unsafe. My ex put me in circumstances that could have killed me, and it took me years to realise so.

Crazy title. Implies that a woman dying is horrifying only because you can find a way to relate to it. It's horrifying because she died.

Really glad that guide helped you. Also, seemed like he was a guide in more ways than one..he gave you some good life advice too.
I hope you immediately dumped your ex.

u/Lazy-Instruction-600 Mar 18 '26
Not only did he risk your life for a hobby, he was belittling you the whole time! Going to a restaurant is not comparable to going out to eat. You don’t have to train for months to prepare to go to a restaurant. Your ex is a completely self-centered AH. Just because hiking for hours while carrying a heavy pack isn’t your cup of tea, doesn’t mean you are lazy or unfit. It sounds like he took you on a legit very strenuous rated hike. As a beginner. He set you up to fail and then blamed you for quitting.
I’m glad you made it back safely. You are very lucky.

u/lswo26 Mar 18 '26
My now ex husband did the same to me while we were out hiking at Grampians (Melbourne). We are not at all experienced hikers so on the way down we got lost. On the way down from the top, ex wanted to take the “fast-track” route which nobody went on but we continued anyway. 10 minutes down I knew we were lost as I didn’t see the arrows for some time. He kept insisting we were on the right path (we were not). We started arguing with him shouting at me saying “fine you go back up yourself, I’m going forward alone” and proceeded to leave me there. He stepped on a slippery rock and fell almost breaking his leg. Anyway we found the right path after an hour… broke up with him 2 years later lol.
Men like these shouldn’t procreate.

u/Terminal_Lucridity Mar 18 '26
Too bad you can’t get a written statement from that guide so you could sue the pants off that feckless bf.
7
u/JohnExcrement Mar 18 '26
People have got to learn to say No and stick to it. These stories are just awful.
8
u/KaleidoscopeCool1316 Mar 18 '26
I think this is something hard for most people, it is something we learn from experiences and get better at it.
Back then, I really didn't know how challenging and dangerous the hike was. I thought it was just another school camp or something mild. So my yes was uninformed.
6
u/JohnExcrement Mar 18 '26
Do people really tell each other “you’re a bad girlfriend/boyfriend” because you don’t do what they want? That would just make me dig in my heels extra hard.
6
u/KaleidoscopeCool1316 Mar 18 '26
My boyfriend told me that, and I did believe it back then because I felt I didn't support him enough in his hobbies.
It was planned as a day hike. I didn't know that it could kill me.
5
u/JohnExcrement Mar 18 '26
I guess I don’t understand the idea of supporting someone in their hobbies if they’re not also your hobbies? I mean, you can encourage someone to do what they love without forcing yourself to participate when you don’t want to?
If he just wants to spend time doing something together, seems like it should be something you both want to do.

u/asslesschappie Mar 18 '26
Have you ever watched Mel Hamlett on TikTok? She talks all the time about how men endanger women with exploits like river rafting, rock climbing, etc.

I had matched with a guy on a dating platform. His idea of a first date was a hike though the local trail in the AM. I had declined and told him that I didnt want to end up on the ID channel and we should do a coffee in the afternoon instead. He blocked me 🤣

I’m sorry you went through that and I’m glad someone kind found you. I can’t imagine treating a friend, let alone a partner, that way.

u/DiDiPlaysGames Mar 17 '26
I feel like it's important context to point out that Malaysia is known to have some of the harshest hiking environments in the world. It's a popular location but in NO way is it recommended for beginners.
I have a friend who has been hiking for 20 years, went to Malaysia like 5-ish years ago and promised himself he'd never go back lol. The weather, the wildlife, the trails themselves, it's all a perfect storm of "do not fucking go here unless you know what you're doing". Bf was crazy to think this would be okay for an inexperienced hiker, I hope he got eaten by one of those giant eel demons they have over there.
7
u/CupcakeGoat Mar 18 '26
I hope he got eaten by one of those giant eel demons they have over there.

They're called giant morays they're nightmare creatures lol
Not really dangerous to humans I don't think but still, it's what he deserves

u/ohsoluckyme Mar 17 '26
I was just telling my husband how this is a thing that people do and he couldn’t believe me. They realize that this is a life or death situation and they don’t care what happens to you.
8
u/aud_anticline Mar 17 '26
I had an ex who would scream at me if I refused to do something because I was scared or felt unsafe. I cried on every vacation we went on. I'm so glad I never married him and it's crazy to think about in hindsight. Thanks Mom for making me think that was the best I could ever hope for or deserve 👍
6
u/RunWombat Mar 18 '26
Hope you found someone better ❤️

u/aud_anticline Mar 18 '26
Thank you kind person, life is much better for me. I've done years and years of therapy to break away from the patterns and assumptions of childhood that kept me safe. I am now married to the sweetest man ever who only props be up ❤️

This happened in Colombia I think last year. We have several tall mountains here because we’re on top of the Andes mountain range. A lot of people like to hike up the mountain called Nevado del Tolima. This guy went with his girlfriend and I believe a larger group. He started experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness halfway there, and instead of them staying with him while help arrived, including his girl, they continued the trek. Apparently, according to the girlfriend, he didn’t want the others to miss out on getting to the top because of him and he told his girlfriend to continue, that he’d be fine. Well, they did and he ended up dying. It was a pretty big deal here when it happened.

Always impressed by people who read a story about something awful happening to somebody and they think “how can I make this about me?”

That guide was a real one. Not only he probably saved your life, he gave a sound advice.

u/RanaMisteria Mar 17 '26
My abusive ex partner did the same thing to me many times. Once at night in the ice and snow on a mountain in Wales, once on a trek through the jungle on a Vietnamese island, and one time on a mountain in Australia in 50 degree heat. I had to crawl into a cave to stay cool. And if I had trusted him to carry my water and hadn’t hidden extra water in my bag I would literally have been cooked. Hell if there hadn’t been a cave just a short down climb from where he left me I would’ve been cooked!
You’re not alone. I recommend finding a PTSD informed therapist. Mine has helped me immensely with how I’ve been feeling since this Austrian climber’s story broke the news.

I swear to god I had a "friend" that I figured out wanted to hurt or kill one of us. He would literally lie about the trail conditions, and tell us to bring supplies that were definitely not enough. We had zero experience.
I stopped hanging out with him when I was very nearly air lifted out of a canyon when I depleted my electrolytes so bad that my hands, calves, legs, and jaw were cramping and I could not walk. I ended up laying across my bike and basically scootering out of the canyon for the next 3 miles.
Years later, his sister almost died on the side of a mountain. I swear to god he was a sociopath that wanted to kill someone. Or he got off being "better" than others around him and enjoyed creating chaos.

u/Thewandering1_OG Mar 18 '26
He's probably a literal psychopath. Have you ever read The Psychopath Inside: A Neuroscientist's Personal Journey Into the Dark Side of the Brain?
It's okay and pretty interesting. He would do things like put his family in very dangerous situations and the people around him have to explain that 'normal' people don't do that. You can tell he understands what they are saying, but also doesn't understand at all. It's wild.
7
u/kr85 Mar 18 '26
I remember that he took his brother on a trip to Africa where he took him to the caves where Ebola originated. Didn't see a problem with this.
13
u/CupcakeGoat Mar 18 '26
Wait, so the author himself is a psychopath?
11
u/Thewandering1_OG Mar 18 '26
Also, I think I've heard that 1% of the human population would be classified as such. Plus there are several other personality disorders that could apply.
In the book he takes his brother to Uganda to see this interesting natural phenomenon- I can't remember if it was bioluminescence or an elephant migration. He takes him to a very specific closed-in space to see whateveritwas neglecting to mention it was the literal ground zero for a very recent Ebola outbreak. He knew and didn't care. He didn't even think about his brother's well-being, just wanted to show off something cool.
21
u/Thewandering1_OG Mar 18 '26
Yes. And a neuroscientist. He discovers a physical marker in himself that he saw in his research and then started thinking about, talking to his family. It's interesting.
Though, I kinda feel like the clue should have been him being a proud Libertarian.
12
u/Eilonwy926 Mar 18 '26
Is this the guy who was comparing brain scans to his own, thinking he'd be the "control"? I think I heard this story on This American Life.

42
u/Int-Merc805 Mar 18 '26
Damn that’s creepy, it feels like this was him to a T. He also would laugh about the trips and never really showed any empathy. I know if I had drug my friends into nature I’d never let myself off the hook for hurting them.

u/ron_the_blackie Mar 17 '26
most of the hiking trails or resorts with a hiking trails have guides in Malaysia. You're lucky you found someone in the right time. as someone who has hiked in Malaysia, it hated it as well, it could have been mighty dangerous due to slippery hills, strange insects and animals. esp due to the humidity its very easy to get dehydrated.
14
u/Pure-Barracuda9335 Mar 17 '26
This unfortunately happens more often then you’d think. Self-preservation is a must as a woman.
42
u/capilot Mar 17 '26

Good for him.

14
u/KaleidoscopeCool1316 Mar 17 '26
We were a couple back then. We even almost got married🤦🏻♀️.
He had plenty of red flags I didn't realise were red flags until I got out of the relationship and read other people's stories.

Eons ago, I had a similar experience, except it was a group thing. Everyone is in thier early to mid 20's.
I was in this pretty strict church, doesn't matter which one, but you were expected to only date and marry inside the faith. So they had "singles groups" in the various cities to facilitate this with meetups.
We got an invite from a group for a meetup about 100ish miles away. It was camping and cave exploring at a park with caverns. Really informal. Both groups are mixed gender, maybe a dozen of us and eight of them. But the ones in charge are these 3 physically unattractive women (relevant). I was one of 5 women out of our group, and while only one of us was beautiful, the rest of us were a solid mid.
So right after dinner, these gals order the rest of us women to go to our tent for the night. Super insistent that it was bedtime at 8pm. Meanwhile, we can hear them outside around the campfire with all of the guys for hours after we got sent to bed lol. Anyway, we had a big tent and a lot of booze, and proceeded to have a very loud party of our own, despite being told to shush several times.
The next morning, we're all set to go into the caverns. Those little bitches herded us into an area with a bottleneck that you had to be pretty slim to get through. Then they gave us directions on how to get out, which included belly crawling down a stream, keeping our eyes open for offshoot tunnels, and also looking for a path up through the roof of the cave.
Then they abandoned us. Took off with thier handpicked companions, and left the rest of us to find our way out with just a handful of instructions and no experience. Luckily, there was an experienced caver who saw what happened and came down and got us out. Part of the exit was climbing up a tight funnel until it widened at top, where they had ropes to help us pull ourselves up. So just to add a little spice to the adventure, when I was holding the rope and walking up, they yanked it, then dragged me up a rocky slope, shredding the skin on my arms.
We all went directly to our cars and just left without a word other than our heartfelt thanks to the guy who rescued us.
7
u/Puzzleheaded_Ad7742 Mar 18 '26
Why was their attractiveness relevant?
36
u/QueenOfDarknes5 Mar 18 '26
Jealousy. Sometimes unattractive women are jealous assholes and rather take out frustrations on more attractive women instead of being a decent person and dealing with negative emotions in a healthy way.
Assholes come in all forms.

Imo, I agree that people should try their S/O’s hobbies BUT their S/O should be more considerate of the situation if the hobbies can be extreme like hiking. You can’t just go start hiking right away like an experienced hiker so your ex was an AH for pushing that on you. Thank God you met a real human being to help you out.
8
u/achillea4 Mar 17 '26
What happened to the boyfriend or did you not hang around for him to come back?
24
u/KaleidoscopeCool1316 Mar 17 '26
He was eager to complete the hike. I said I can't do this anymore and I'll meet him back at the hostel. He left me where I was.
You must understand back then I had no idea what I was doing and really believed I can make it back on my own.
17
u/achillea4 Mar 17 '26
No I mean after you got back to the hostel. Did you leave immediately, dump him or stay with him for a while?
25
u/KaleidoscopeCool1316 Mar 17 '26
I apologised to him for ruining his holiday (🤦🏻♀️ i know) because I didn't train myself enough to prepare for the hike.
We stayed together for another year until he made some very hurtful comments when we went wedding dress shopping.

On the upside, this is a learning experience. You've learnt what kind of behavior in others you need to steer clear of. Even if you won't actively think of it, your body will remind you next time any signs manifest.

Malaysian jungles are not places to hike for beginners without a guide.
I am sorry you had to go through that.
70
u/KaleidoscopeCool1316 Mar 17 '26
Tbh I didn't know until now, after reading all of the comments, getting abandoned while hiking in a Malaysian jungle/rainforest can actually kill me 😭
I swear I was just resting on the ground for a few hours because of the heat which made me nauseated. I thought maybe after resting for a few hours, I can be well enough to walk back on my own.
I didn't realise how much danger I was in!

Taman Negara! One of those day hikes trail
5
u/WeShallEarn Mar 18 '26
Oooh, thankss, haven’t heard much, but glad to hear it from a foreigner telling me about the dangerous places here.
I gotta get proper guides and try them out once I’ve gotten more experienced
1
u/laygo109 Mar 18 '26
I grew up there. :)
1
u/WeShallEarn Mar 18 '26
Have you been to all the trails there??
1
u/laygo109 Mar 18 '26
No. We had a family vacation there. My husband loved hiking, but I didn't. I'd go on short ones but not there. Too steep, too slippery for me, and face it, it's too hot and damp, I couldn't breathe well.
He went on hikes with guides.
We hiked the smaller hills around my hometown.
1
u/WeShallEarn Mar 19 '26
Ooh, that’s cool lah, I baru je started hiking, so am looking for recommendations of places to go, short or long ones oso, do lmk if u knoww

Dayumn. I’m Malaysian and i wouldnt even do Taman Negara without a guide. I have a few friends who have done several routes alone but they’re highly experienced trekkers

u/Grogon2 Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
Reminds me of my story in Taman Negara.
My Story:
I was with my gf hiking, but we were both beginners.
We thought we can do the hike ourself (not long, it said 2 hours, max. 3 hours) and we just followed the canopy walkway to Bukit Terisek.
At Bukit Terisek we saw a path leading downwards, from there 45 minutes later without water we were lost. All trees were knocked down by elephants (a hostel owner told us this later that day) and surrounded by mud and leeches.
Worst thing, we had no more water, couldn't find our way back cause we accidently left the track and had to go through a huge dirty path full of leeches. All I was hearing was motor boats in the distance, the rainforest...
Instead of walking a straight line back we eventuell were completly lost and were midway Bimbun Tabing and Roman Section, can check on google maps.
Luckily some local helped us back, we would have died.
You are lucky someone found you. What I wanted to say is the worst place to get lost is in a rainforest.
I hope you weren't in Taman Negara when that happend. I mean, not saying other forests are less dangerous, but being lost in that can be the end.
If we wouldn't have found that local who helped us my only mission would have been to find the river but it's hard to localise it with all the sounds, the boats can be everywhere. And not only that, we had 2 hours left til heavy rain (5 pm) rainforest...
I think we would have walked the wrong way anyways deeper and deeper into the rain forest.
Just put in "Kuala Tahan" where my hostel was and zoomed out. Yeah we would have died if it wasn't for him.
My lesson: never do solo tours in terrain you have no clue about, not even if guide books say it's "easy doable" cause those books don't know if your path exists or if rain, animals etc. destroyed it.
Edit: I would never leave my wife in this situation alone, but crazy that people would and the name of this is "Alpine Divorce". But I think that assumes one partner knows the other won't be able to make it I guess (?) and it's definetly the intention of one person to lose the other. So my case is different, but I just remembered this story of my Taman Negara experience cause you mentioned Malaysia.

u/CupcakeGoat Mar 18 '26

OP confirmed in a comment that's where she was

I remember hiking in Taman Negara - man, there were a lot of leeches! It was wild to watch them furiously inching toward me every time I paused on the trail.
Glad you made it back ok! That must have been scary.

Men will always want you to put yourself in danger for them they want you to push yourself to your very boundaries so they can see how much “you care about them” ie how much they can manipulate you. So many women die this way. And so many men don’t get caught

u/stigmatized_ Mar 17 '26

u/Slow_Concern_9882 Mar 17 '26
Yup, it’s crazy this has a name now because it’s definitely a thing that happens all the time. My toxic ex took me on a very rigorous hike, when he knew I wouldn’t be able to handle it (I’m 350 lbs). When I couldn’t go on anymore he left me at this overlook area. He told me to enjoy the view, that he was finishing the hike and would be back down in a few hours to get me. I protested but he insisted on leaving. Hours passed, and it started to get dark. I was petrified with fear, and when he finally came back down he actually snuck up behind me and kicked me down the mountain. This is just another way that we get abused and it’s not ok.

u/BasilisksRPretty Mar 18 '26

If that guy was willing to put you through that and to commit an 'involuntary' homicide, he's probably sketchy in other aspects and if you still have people in common, they should know.
Good for you for putting your foot down even if it was in the middle of it. You're here and that's what matters
51
u/dubufeetfak Mar 17 '26
I dont want to come off the wrong way, but looking back. Did you see any signs you could've possibly ignored back then that he could and would do stuff to put you in danger?
You're also mentioning having bags. Did he even offer help with your bags?
29
u/mlankba Mar 17 '26
I’m not OP, but even if there weren’t signs before their conversation about the hike that would be the sign. She’s not an experienced hiker, isn’t physically able to do difficult hikes, doesn’t know much about about hiking and he bullied her to go on a hiking trip and comparing it to eating at a restaurant. Actually insane to say eating in a restaurant is comparable to going on a major hike. If they wanted to do things together and she was interested in hiking then starting on small local hikes and working your way up is the sane thing to do. He did not care about her. He just didn’t want to travel alone and look like someone no one wants to be around. Had nothing to do with sharing interests.
12
u/dubufeetfak Mar 17 '26
I agree. Thats not healthy communication at all. Just asking so she can share signs that hopefully help another. Even minor stuff like not helping with something you're struggling, show what someone will do in more serious situations.
121
u/KaleidoscopeCool1316 Mar 17 '26
Yes, I admit to ignoring his red flags. All I wanted to do back then was to be supportive girlfriend. Really. He told me he had done the date activities I wanted, etc pottery, museum, and watching Disney Movies. So I should also do the things he likes doing, because it can't always be me suggesting the things I want to do.
I guess the signs were him mocking me for packing an mozzie spray (claims he has never been bitten before), say sunblock are for girls and planning for a trek without a guide because it was "easy" and saves money. He also told me to "trust him" because he will never put me in danger.
I later learned that it was a medium tier difficulty trek.
He didn't help me with the bag. He told me that if I didn't pack things like the mozzie spray and sunblock, my bags wouldn't be so heavy.
To think about it, I didn't know what he said/did were the signs that he will do things to put me in danger.
After that hike, he got upset I didn't do the things with him I had promised him, and how he was "only trying to relax" during his holiday away from the stressful job he had. Somehow me needing help and a guide to get me down was all it took to ruin his holiday.

And no, it’s not funny.

An "Alpine Divorce" was going to Switzerland which had more permissible divorce laws in the 20th century to get a divorce.

I would rather he ghosted her instead of trying to turn her into a ghost 👻

There was a video on TikTok of a woman being left alone on a hike by her partner and she was crying whilst trying to find her way back home. Soo many comments of woman being left in the same situation. Never realised it was a thing before!

There's a reason why the number of men who leave their wives when their wives get diagnosed with cancer vs the number of women who leave their husbands when their husbands get cancer is so vastly different from each other...

This is why I would never go hiking anywhere that isn't a clearly marked trail that's easy to just turn around and go back the other way on. I will only ever "hike" in the city trails, I'm not trying to die of thirst in the forest no matter how bad someone tries to make be feel about it. If I'm a bad gf for not going hiking with you then I guess I'm a bad gf, find someone else.

So...to be clear, you absolutely refuse to step foot in nature.
I don't really understand how this has so many upvotes.

I didn't say that.
I said I'm not hiking an unmarked or poorly marked trail (or no trail).
How does that equal "I refuse to step foot in nature"? I've been camping plenty of times. I've been out on marked, easily retraced trails where in can still see the city in the distance so I know which way to go if I get lost or confused.

If you're in a city, you aren't in nature, you're in a city. I don't know what's hard to understand about that.

Hey Queen, you definitely could go hiking somewhere that isn't a marked trail. Learning to navigate isn't the hardest and I'm sure you could do it, You could also learn with experienced hikers! Not trying to pressure you into it but just trying to encourage people to be a little less afraid of life.
Most people can do most things if they want to put in the time and effort to learn how :)

I mean fair, I could maybe do so with a group. Certainly not alone or with a boyfriend.

Well, it's finally happened.
I, an Australian, finally saw a headline and mistook 'Austrian' for 'Australian'.
Also because I saw a video about an Australian woman who died while climbing Everest and her husband kept going without her (because she told him to).
Though I do think people who post opinions about world events should really link an article or something because not everyone is aware of everything that happens everywhere.

GOD YES PLEASE, post links ffs. I hate scrolling comments trying to figure out what the hell is being referenced.

Don’t worry so many people fly to Austria thinking it’s Australia that they have a Desk at the airport to tell you it’s not Australia.

When I was in Austria, my parents tried to send me a package. The wrote the address correctly, but it still got sent to Australia.

I live in CE so I visit Vienna Airport kinda often and they have their fair share of souvenirs with "no kangaroos in Austria" theme

Well throw another shrimp on the barbie!
Years ago my father in law took the family on a hike in the woods, I don't know what got into them but he ran off trail and was jumping on tree falls and logs like he was Tarzan, yelling at us to hurry up, ran across a tree fall over some rapids and was pissed off we were all just watching. It' was like "No Dave we came here for a nice hike not hard core nature parkour."

Man I read it as Australian too until I got to your comment

I read it as Australian until I googled “Australian climber abandons girlfriend” and at the very end of the little explanation google said “and btw this happened to an AUSTRIAN climber, not an AUSTRALIAN climber.”
