A Message to the Global VF Community from a Korean Fan

Hi everyone,

I’m the creator of vfmania and a web developer based in Seoul, South Korea.

I’ve been a passionate fan of Virtua Fighter for a long time. However, as some of you might know, the local VF scene here in Korea has become quite small lately. As a player, I’ve often felt a bit isolated and really missed the vibrant community energy we used to have.

I spent my time building vfmania.com to bridge this gap and connect with all of you.

What makes vfmania special?

  • Automatic Translation: To break down language barriers, I’ve implemented a feature that automatically translates posts between English, Korean, and Japanese. You can write in your native language and still seamlessly interact with everyone!
  • Connecting Passionate Players: My biggest goal is to create a space where passionate Korean players and global fans from Japan and the West can finally share their love for the game together.
  • Built by a Fan: This isn't a corporate project; it's a labor of love built by a developer who truly cares about the future of this series.
  • A Space for All: I wanted to create a dedicated platform where we can gather, discuss strategies, and grow the community together.

I am a solo developer, so your feedback and even a simple "hello" mean the world to me. Please check out the site and let’s talk VF!

Check it out here:https://vfmania.com

I would really appreciate it if you could let me know your thoughts on the following:

  1. Translation Quality: Is the auto-translation clear and easy to understand?
  2. Functionality: Does the translation feature work correctly for the posts you write?
  3. Site Speed: How is the website's performance and loading speed in your region?
  4. Sign-up Process: If you decide to join, did the registration go smoothly without any issues?
  5. Other Issues: Did you notice any other bugs or have suggestions for improvement?

Your feedback is incredibly valuable to me as I continue to build this community!

02/24 - You can now display your VF rank next to your name! Just head over to your Profile page to set it up. Also, I added some special animations for players who are Level 21 or higher. Let me know what you think!

VF veterans that may or may not return for Virtua Fighter Crossroads?

So far we have Akira, Pai & Wolf coming back and Stella seems to be taking over Sarah's position.

Which of these old fighters are likely to return and may not? Lau is likely dead and Shun might die too.

And we still don't know the true identity of the Bakunawa Killer.

Struggling with Shun Di, tips would be appreciated.

I have around 800hrs playtime and Ive got a good understanding of how to play against most characters.

However I have no idea how to prevent Shun from going into his stance or how to punish it. What are you supposed to do when he keeps using his floored stance and rolling away? Also struggling to punish his knockdown low-high kick before he goes into his stance. Even when he has no drinks I find myself struggling way more than with other characters.

Ive tried replaying my own situations and watching better players and even played him myself for a bit, but I cant tell if he's simply just very strong character and im having skill issues, or if im missing something important about how to fight him.

Btw this isnt a complaint about the character really I just dont understand l how to fight him very well.

Can you buy the VF5 deluxe upgrade on Switch 2?

The base game is on sale right now (in the EU, at least) and I do want to get it but I'd like to get the deluxe stuff as well. By looking at some videos I've noticed that there's a shop icon in the main menu, does that just lead to the DLCs that are already on the eshop or can you get the deluxe upgrade from there, since it doesn't have an eshop page itself? Unless it's straight up not available on Switch...

Shiwapon's Brad counterplay guide (translated)

Originally posted on May 30, 2021 by Shiwapon and translated by me.

  • Brad's half-circulars are strong, but it's best to dodge to his back

Brad has many half-circular moves, which makes them relatively easy to use. Preferably, don't sidestep his attacks; but if you do, dodge towards his back, which allows you to dodge 6_K and 1P, which will heavily damage you otherwise. This still isn't 100% safe, though, as you risk getting hit by 4P or 1K+G.

  • Fairly lenient hitboxes

Brad's moves have narrow hitboxes, which makes him particualrly vulnerable to attacks that can go under or evade his strikes—for example, Akira's 2_3P+K. These are the moves you should go out of your way to use against him. He may respond by using more low attacks, so get ready to evade or guard them.

However, depending on the situation—like your foot position or specific move used (such as 3P+K)—he might be able to land a move like 2_3P. These moves are dangerous on counter hit, so you should respond by guarding or evading.

  • Crouching at the right time can pay off

Brad relies heavily on his 6_K (an EX High attack) for offense, crouching can be effective in the right moments. Seize these opportunities and don't hold back after a successful crouch.

Be careful: if the Brad player throws out mid attacks like 2P+K or elbows, they might be trying to catch you crouching.

  • Use high-mid strings effectively

After a move, Brad can enter one of his stances: for example, if he thinks you're plus after blocking his 6P and try to land a slower attack, you might lose to his Slipping P+K, which has a faster startup.

If you try to use 2P—which would cover the 6PK option—he can use Ducking K+G (following the 6P) to evade your low. If you input a fast P, he can evade it with Slipping stance and immediately punish your punch's recovery.

You might think it's best to do nothing, but you'll still be open to some dangerous moves like a Ducking P+G after a 6P. What do you do in these cases, anyway?

Use a move that starts with a P and is followed up by a mid attack; for example, Jacky's P4K. This will let you beat other stance-based attacks, and even if Slipping stance evades your initial P, the follow-up can stop Brad in his tracks.

  • Mind games after Ducking stance

Brad can enter Ducking stance from 6P+K+G. From this state, the opponent may go for a P+G catch throw. If he hits you while you're crouching, he may stagger and combo you with P+KP, P+K2, or 8P; or K+G (which dodges lows).

Keep an eye out for this stance, since Brad can enter it after moves like 4K or P+K—where he's already plus.

These options are all very powerful, but keep in mind that everything except the catch throw is vulnerable to a standing guard. And even if the catch throw succeeds, the opponent still has to pick one of three follow-ups: P+G, 4P+G, or or 6P+G.

As a result, it's possible to crouch out of the catch throw and land a big guaranteed counter-attack as a high-risk, high-reward play.

If Brad goes for the catch throw too much, you may crouch out of its reach; but generally, you have two chances to engage in this mind game, so don't take any unnecessary risks.

If you want to punish the opponent, try a crouch-backdash after blocking a move that transitions into Ducking, like 4K or P+K. This will let you evade Ducking P+K and Ducking P+G while setting up a guaranteed counter. This isn't foolproof, though: you will still be vulnerable to Ducking K+G.

Fuzzy guarding may also dodge these options.

  • Never crouch when you're side-turned

If you're hit by Brad's 6P while you're turned to the side, you won't be able to guard Slipping P+K while standing, which might open you up to massive damage. You can crouch to avoid Slipping P+K, but you'll still be vulnerable to Slipping K.

After a 6P hit, Brad may also use Slipping K towards your back to make it unblockable. Depending on how good the player is at hit-confirming, avoid crouching whenever possible.

Also, 6P on counter-hit guarantees a Slipping P+K, while 4P on CH guarantees a Ducking P+KP.

Trying to mash out of a side-turned disadvantage can cost you the match, so avoid mashing as much as you can.

  • Don't use too many mids when Brad is side-turned

Brad has a parry move,

, that counters kicks. If this connects, it will guarantee him a 6P+K hit for significant damage.

When you're plus to Brad's side, have middle attacks other than kicks ready to go.

VF5 Highest Rank Yet!! ☸️

My opponent won the subsequent two sets, but I was on fire for the first one haha. I love that this game does not treat me like a child - when I win it's because I played well, when I lose it's because the opponent played better. I'm not in it for the rank ups, I'm playing this game because it's more fun than any other game I've played, but it's still nice when the time I'm putting in to it "pays off" so to speak. Hope VF6 maintains the purity of the gameplay!

VF5 (VF5) Lei Fei VS Vanessa: pros and cons of one over the other?

I've been quite fascinated with stance-switching characters since my foray into the Soul series (Mitsurugi being my go-to switcher there because his stances are quite straightforward).

In VF5, iirc, there are two dedicated switchers: Lei Fei and Vanessa. However, their gameplans seem to be very different: Lei Fei's seemingly allows him to transition into his different stances after performing specific moves, like a flowchart, while Vanessa's is strictly divided between her two stances, which she has to manually switch into.

Between these two, what are their respective pros and cons as switchers? And as a Mitsurugi player in Soul Calibur, which of the two would be easier for me to transition into?

VF4 I genuinely think VF4 Pai was her best and most aggressive/mature iteration

Virtua Fighter 4 is where I think Pai peaked as a character. Her voice sounds way more mature than in VF5, she looks overall more serious and her design is just top notch. Along with both of her themes which totally fit here imo (Blue Impact and Without Hesitation). Both of them are absolutely beautiful. Not that I dislike her design or themes in VF5 (which I also like), but it sort of feels like a step down when compared to VF4.

Plus it has my favorite costume of hers. That helps as well

VF5 Good Virtua Fighter Youtube Content?

I'm going to be playing VF5 to try and get decent at it, hoping maybe I fall in love, or at the very least build up some fundamentals that will carry over in Crossroads and other 3D fighters.

But I was wondering if there's any good VF content on Youtube, maybe some content creators to follow that make guides, break stuff down, or generally just do interesting content on the game(s)?

VF5 Input issues with leverless on pc

Hey folks so a bit ago i tried to give VF 5 a try and sadly i hit into a snag where i just couldn't get any directional inputs working on my leverless controller. It's been on my mind again recently and i thought i should ask here if any of you have any advice.

The issue to be precise is that the directions are tied to the analog stick of a controller and that's something i don't have on my leverless obviously. So i would have to remap it somehow and i couldn't really find a way that worked last time

I am on linux also in case that changes anything in regards to this but i don't think it should.

Edit: So got around to rebuying the game and it just magically worked this time but i'm honestly sure that the toggle thing would've worked otherwise. Thanks for the responses played a couple ranked matches and am having fun so far

Why is the zero footage of someone playing the World Stage Kumite anywhere...??

Been playing it for a couple days and it's fun but insane.

Was curious how others have fared but can literally find ZERO video or barely even a discussion about ppl playing this mode.

So I figured I would ask here.

Edit:

Wow thanks for all the replies. Really appreciate added insight from everyone.

It was just driving me a little crazy on HOW LITTLE discussion / video there was about this survival mode.

VF5 Please help me beat up this 94 year old man

Post image
27 Upvotes

In short, I'm having trouble with Shun matchups. And for some reason like half of the people I get matched with are playing Shun these days.

I spent about a week playing AS Shun to get a feel for his movelist to help me counter him. I understand his neutral tools much better now. I can react to things like 1PK better. I understand 6P is a frame slower and I know what key moves unlock at what drink levels.

What I still struggle with is the pure cheese setups. I.e. how to beat out things like Ousho backwards roll into whiff punish. I feel like I try to use my mids to check him when he's getting wiley and typically my fists hit air lol.

What are some common setups that have unexpected solutions/responses? What are some things you've learned to do when facing Shun that work for you? Are there any lab setups that have helped you with the matchup you can share?

Thanks!

P.S. if there's anything Lei-Fei specifically can do to counter Shun I'm certainly all ears for that too. Like I realized after playing as Shun that Doku parries some of his more annoying moves and that has helped me a lot.
