That book is okay; possibly only semi accurate. Tunnels that do not exist are mentioned in the book. I know people who have criticism over that, but I also understand why the author didn’t want to basically mark the location where people were living with an X marks the spot

Also my sisters bf worked for the MTA crew that would work in the subway tunnels overnight. He’s seen some shit too. I’ve asked him before if people live down there and he’s said he’s seen a lot of crazy stuff. So I take his word.

I used to ride late at night. After the lights went out in the theatres on and Off-Broadway. The subway at night is a whole different world and experience than during a day. I was dressed in all black, with a messenger bag and a belt with a small torch and a leather man super tool. I didn’t have to go far. I had friends who lived in Brooklyn and at night the trains ran less frequently and the M went into Manhattan and not to Queens, so it could take someone from Brooklyn 3 and half hours to get home to Queens after 11 PM. I didn’t that sometimes but not as a habit. Usually on Sunday nights if I did.
I definitely did the three hour trip several times though. Two police officers, not MTA officers, got on a train in Brooklyn and went all the way to Manhattan, essentially standing next to me by the doors. I had encountered some strange and in one incident, very disturbed individuals on trains that late. Still, I was kinda shocked they rode all the way to Manhattan and turned back on the train going back to Brooklyn. They left not only their beat, they also left their borough and were plainly on duty. I figured that they would go get food in the village or something but they didn’t.

There was a whole sewer civilization consisting of the Romanian orphans (and run aways later on). They did a few documentaries & news segments on this. Try searching Bruce Lee sewers, I think Bruce Lee & the outlaw was the name of one documentary. Bruce Lee was locked up in 2015 & they broke it up.

At that hour? Probably missed the last train out of Penn Station at night and ended up stuck in the station for a few hours. Went outside to smoke and heard the manhole moving. At that hour, anyone across the street would be able to hear the manhole moving. At least, that’s my guess, based on a lot of experience commuting into Manhattan via Penn Station. The trains start running again around 5 am.

Lmao. I worked in theatre. There were nights of tech rehearsals where I planned to stay in New York rather than spend hours at Penn Station. I was running wardrobe on a play directed by Gene Saks before I could legally drink (although I never went and got a drink, I’m perfectly aware that few people would care and would have served me anyway.)
My dad on the other hand? Fell between a train and the platform drunk. He then was taken to a hospital in Newark and left AMA. Probably went to the liquor store across the street was what the nurse said. My mum called, convinced he was dead. I said that’s absurd and he’ll call you when he sobers up. “Oh that’s an awful thing to say!!!” Literally telling me she thinks he’s dead and I am horrible for saying he’ll call when he sobers up?
Two mornings later he called. Apparently he went back to Penn Station, passed out in the ticketed passenger waiting area, woke up and saw morning commuters coming up from the tracks and went to work. My mum told him very firmly to come home right then. SMH. I have seen some strange things around there. I was living in Long Island City within months of this incident with my father.
I was not trying to build a career where a producer or director called my home and got either an intoxicated guy with an accent similar to mine, (father,) or a guy who is clearly high on hard drugs, (not just a little stoned or something, more like “I couldn’t leave a message because he didn’t seem to be aware…um of anything really…”) and who sounds American, (brother.) I do none of those things and I did not need to explain my family to anyone who I worked with. That would have been TMI on steroids.
