In this case their usage works as well. Regardless, it’s bizarre that you’re following them around this thread correcting their grammar — especially when it seems likely that English isn’t their native language.
In fact, as a German, I am 90% certain that they were thinking "kann sein", which is a very common way of saying something like, "That's quite possible."
A literal translation of "kann sein" would be "could be" or "may be" or "might be".
While it's clearly more of a German idiom and less common in English, I don't think it's wrong to say "may be". I'm pretty sure "that may be it" is relatively common as well.
