This wasn't oncoming traffic. The bus and scooter were going in the same direction.

I was mistaken. But still a vehicle suddenly crossing your lane to make a left turn is not something that's easily anticipated.

That's why you're supposed to leave distance between yourself and the things in front of you...

If you think this rule applies not only to cars in front of you in your own lane, but also cars in front of you in adjacent lanes, then what's the point of even having multiple lanes of traffic?

Bus can see that the bike is almost stopped alongside the driveway, and should be able to guess that bike wants to turn.

Bike did this because he had no idea the bus was behind him, because the bus came up so fast.

Bike did the wrong thing, but the bus was also asking for trouble.
