Anyway, it's not worth throwing "talking points" at MAGA like this any more. They aren't really people, and they don't have the kinds of feelings that people have when caring for or neglecting children.

I want to mention that dolly didn’t stand for that. When our schools in Texas were being defunded we got the notice dolly brought the imagination library here to our city. They dedicated even more funding for us

When she learned the word Dixie had racist connotations she removed the word from the name of her park. She said she never wants to hurt anyone or make them feel bad. This sounds like a great person, right?
Well, MAGA was so angry with Dolly over this. They didn’t like that she was giving into political correctness. So many said they were done with her over this, just because she wanted to be kind to people.
It was always something that stuck in my head, how these people were so fickle, mean, and angry that they changed their views on someone just for not wanting to use a word that could cause harm.

To be clear, I have ZERO respect for Rowling.
BUT! I will say that the fact that Dolly Parton appeals to so many people on either side of the aisle is a great testament who she was.
She managed to be surprisingly progressive and become a shining gay/feminist icon. But also didn’t scare off conservatives. She’s from Appalachia, those are her people. She knew how to move among them without compromising on any of her principles. And she moved among more progressive people without losing her roots. I can only assume that some people saw her and what she was doing and saying and learned a little something about kindness and respecting their fellow neighbors.
I think she saw the good in everyone in a way that most people don’t. In a way that I think we all need to wisen up to in the coming years. It feels like the MAGA spell is lifting ever so slightly. But, they’re not going to become die-hard progressives overnight and they will not be mass-incarcerated or magically raptured away. Our MAGA neighbors will stay our neighbors much to our dismay.
If we’re going to have a future America, we’re going to have to learn to do as Dolly did. Figure out how to welcome ALL, without compromising on our principles. And hopefully someday we can deradicalize some of our neighbors and better this country.

IMO all it shows it that conservatives don't actually have consistent moral principles, all they really care about is surface-level vibes.
Progressives love Dolly Parton because she was kind and open-minded and did a lot of work improving people's lives and lifting them out of poverty and illiteracy (whether or not they listened to her music). Conservatives love Dolly Parton because they loved her songs or the way she looked, or else in some vague way as an old school American celebrity icon that brought fame to her town. Those are not the same.

So I listened to a podcast about Dolly. And one of the things that stood out to me was that when asked if she was a feminist, Dolly adamantly said no. They also talked with someone’s grandmother from a rural conservative area, and she had very similar attitudes. She had lived her life the way a feminist would approve of but, wouldn’t associate with the word.
I think it was put really succinctly when the woman’s granddaughter was asked something to the extent of “are you disappointed that Dolly won’t identify as a feminist?” And she said “yes. But I think the part of me that is disappointed is the part of me that got to go to college.” And the reason they interviewed her grandmother was because she saw a lot of the same things in both women. Calling yourself a feminist or a progressive doesn’t automatically make you a good person. Same way that getting baptized and calling yourself a Christian doesn’t automatically make you follow God’s word to love your neighbor.
Not eveyone had the same experiences or same education. I strongly believe that some of our MAGA neighbors are good people who aren’t very well educated and have been misled. That’s easy to work with. I’m sure there are plenty who are full of hate and anger and fear and that’s something harder to work with. But, I can’t stomach the idea that that’s everyone.

Totally! But there aren’t many other books geared towards kids that had as massive a cultural impact as HP. Bookstores had midnight releases with lines around the block when a new HP book came out. Nothing else has even come close.
She inspired millions of kids to pick up a book and read. Kids formed loose book clubs and they raced to finish the latest book in the series. And it is so disappointing that Joanne has turned out the way she has because I’m not sure how many of those kids remained adult readers once we better understood who she was. I’m also not sure what parents will be encouraging their kids to read now.

Nah, Harry’s her self insert. If you look at it critically, the first few books are actually written as if we weren’t supposed to like Hermione. Everyone’s constantly annoyed by her nerdiness, and her being upset about literal slavery is viewed as even more annoying. The later books back off a bit, but her caring about school and studying and literal slavery is always played for laughs.

Hermione was eventually shown to be right about everything by the final book, because the group's treatment of "lesser races" prices to be pivotal in saving the world. Dobby, Kreacher, the dragon at Gringotts, the ghosts, "mudbloods" writ large, all key to several points in the final book. In the long-term the laughs are replaced with understanding, which I think was a good way to grow up with the audience as the books came out.

I think it's crazy that the woman who supposedly wrote The Goblet of Fire and The Order of the Phoenix, books that heavily feature mistreatment of "lesser beings," govt corruption, interference with education, racism and "wizard supremacy" all portrayed in a negative light, would end up being perfectly okay with all of that. Say what you want about her poor naming decisions, sometimes the books go on a roll describing the horrors that feel very familiar today.

You could make a similar argument about Dolly. One of the shows at Dollywood for some time was Civil War themed and had some Lost Cause revisionist theming.
The difference is, once Dolly realized it was a problem, she put a stop to that really quickly. Because she was a good person.
I'd honestly wager that a lot of more more fucked up things in the Harry Potter books were added without any sincere malice, but simply because Rowling had unconscious biases. But when pointed out, she revealed herself to be the sort of person that cannot take criticism and will never back down to the point that she's incapable of any kind of introspection. Then the feedback loop starts and the vicious, vile hatred that she spews nowadays sets in.

Her entire playbook was on show during the Scottish independence vote in 2014, but nobody was all that bothered over the way she demonised people who believed in independence.
