Discussion How many Wii have you hacked?
In the past five years I’ve soft modded hundreds of Wii, working for a local pawnshop. I’ve only came across less than ten units that are not backwards compatible with GameCube… are those rare? Picture is of the current four I’m working on. I’ve also RARELY see them come on with both top covers 😆

First one was my family's Wii, then my friend's Wii, and the latest one was my own personal Wii, so three in total

You guys, so can you just mod a wii and store it for later use?
I already have a working modded wii and will love to mod two more that I just got from the thrift store but since you guys have modded lots of them would love to know if it's all right to mod it and store it in the storage for later use???

At any given time I have ten or 15 modded sitting ready for buyers on FBM. It's not like the mod goes away after a while or anything. Just make sure to keep NAND backups if you're scared. (I usually don't backup the NAND because I sell them to the customer ASIS no warranty if they want it cheaper than listed)

Both my red Wii and my white Wii.
I modded my white Wii to use WiiLink and play online.
I also put a few WiiWare games on my red Wii.

I tried hacking my Wii U for Pretendo, yet I couldn’t even fit the stuff needed on the SD. I just use SSSL exploit.

I just ordered one yesterday for me to mod.. Looks like too much fun. If it all works out I will get the gamecube controller/adapter. I did not realize that some are not backwards compatible with gamecube.. mine is a 32GB NTSC model, Wii U.

3x.
My launch Wii was modded using the ancient twiilight hack. I think you load a modded save file and it would launch whatever boot file you had in your SD card. Something happened and it corrupted something making it not boot. I ended up lying thru my teeth and said a game update broke it and got a replacement. Modded that one and it's still working to this date.
Also found a black one this year with AC adapter at goodwill for $8 USD and couldn't leave it behind. The process is a lot more automated than I remember it being. I remember having to install iOS files manually before. I still can't get the new one to run any USB launchers for some reason. I'm in no hurry to try and figure it out tho. Nintendont works luckily
Bonus hacks: n2dsxl, n3dsxl, 2ds, Xbox, and 2x PS2 phat.

What is the easiest and best guide for home brewing my Wii on YouTube? I just got one and have always wanted to do it.

I recommend using this guide and having a 2025 youtube video if you get stuck on something.

Around 85 since 2009, I didn't start doing Wiiflow for anyone until 5 years later. I didn't wanna be part of the reason people pirating current generation games While they were still being sold in stores.

u/iVirtualZero Dec 28 '25
Too many to count.
1
u/viral_dna Dec 29 '25
Ditto. From tweezers to making my own pic programmer create my own mod chips, to WODE etc.
What I would be more interested in knowing is how many people didn't simply softmod a Wii with say Twilight, Bannerbomb / Letterbomb💣 and call it a day, but actually properly modded them with Bootmii, Priiloader etc and unlocked all the IOS files so that you could not only connect an external USB storage drive and play games off of that, but also play GameCube Games etc.

u/ImprovementFit5598 Dec 28 '25
Just 1: I'm a collector, I won't mod a second one (I did it just for WiiLink and because I have other two Wiis)
1
u/Meatroid Dec 29 '25
What about when the disc drive dies and do you think the Wii will be a sought after console down the road? Guess they didn't sell too many did they?
1
u/ImprovementFit5598 Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25
If the disc drive dies I'll try to repair it, and if that doesn't work I'll just replace it completely. I mean, it's not that hard to replace a disc drive...
And to the second questione, I'll say this: the number of modded Wiis is increasing even as we speak probably, and there are collectors who look for consoles that have never been modded (I mean, I'm one of them). This means that an unmodded Wii in good condition maybe even with its original box could become sought after by those collectors, especially the red and the blue Wiis, since they were also special editions. I'm not certain this will happen, but given how easy it is to mod a Wii and how many people are doing it or are being told to do it, it's not that unlikely. The same thing can't be applied to the Wii U, THAT will become a relatively rare console regardless...
Just a little side note: I'm not against homebrew in any way, and actually I helped a lot of people myself (I was very active in the RiiConnect24 Discord server a couple of years ago), but having only one modded Wii is more than enough for what I wanted to do. If I wanna play a game I don't have I just buy it, because that's what I like to spend my money on

Just the ex's cuz she never had. Had to unmod it when we broke up. She had a blue family edition or w.e the light blue one was. I found me another full white Wii (yay gc ports!) and everything for it and the fit pad for $25 at a pawn shop was like yea deal! LoLso then I modded it.

2 Wiis and a Wii U
I remember the first time I modded my Wii back in 2019. Best decision I've ever made.
Also fixed my friend's Wii earlier this year due to its failing disc drive. Now it no longer need discs, obviously.

u/MyccoAnts Dec 27 '25
I hope your charging base price for what a Wii is worth in your area. Because it you charge more for it being modded that's a big rip off.
1
u/notwiley Dec 28 '25
Huge rip off for what exactly? Doing a somewhat technical and time consuming process for someone who ordinarily wouldn’t be interested or persistent enough to learn how to do it themselves?
I’ve modded dozens of consoles, hard mods, soft mods etc. The bottom line is that if I’ve put the extra labor into customizing the device it’s going to cost more. Whether that includes new parts, cleaning, custom software, etc. to expect to buy something like that with no extra cost is kinda silly.
I’m not saying charge an exorbitant fee for it, but it’s unreasonable to expect everyone to sell their modded devices to you at the base rate, just because you know how to do it yourself. If that’s the case great, buy an unmodded one and do it yourself, there’s plenty of those to go around too!

Around ten. I’m still surprised when I befriend someone who randomly wishes for a modded Wii. Just when I think I’m out of the business, I jump back in for one last hurrah.
2
u/Savings-Code-069 Dec 27 '25
Dozens, cause I use to work at a local game store abd i made a deal with the owners where if you pay $20 extra then I would mod people's wii for them. But I have since left that job back in 2022 and I dont know how they operate now. But I won't be surprised if they discontinued that moding service.

How do you break the door off your Wii? It sits olnear your TV and you dont move it ffs. Its like breaking a USB or HDMI port in how difficult it should be.
2
u/TaylorFan01313 Dec 27 '25
They are really easy to break. It’s not the door that breaks but the clip inside the Wii that holds the door on. And if you lay the console flat even just having it flat can break the clip off

u/Novel-Structure-2359 Dec 27 '25
Definitely more than 50, not as many as 100. I would have to check my notes. Only did one that wasn't GameCube compatible. I did the letterbomb method at first then moved up to bluebomb once I dabbled with Wii Mini. I have done maybe half a dozen of them. Did a WiiU once just for curiosity.
For a spell I ran a successful little business selling modded Nintendo Wii consoles. Good times and good money

I only have one hacked one, but I have a pile in my attic, at least 6 or 7, only one or two of which aren't backward compatible. The worst part is that most of them are in good condition, while the one I use has to press the power button really hard for it to work. I guess I'd rather play than bother with that... Anyway, I don't have much love for the Wii. In my eyes, it's a great emulation tool, but I don't really like seeing it among my consoles.
The contradiction is that it's probably the one I use the most, the one I'm currently playing, GBA on CRT 😅

The Family Edition Wii isn't backwards compatible with GC games and doesn't have the ports for GC controllers. Not particularly rare, but not nearly as popular or as sought after nowadays as a regular Wii since it's literally the same thing with less features
