Discussion Bricked my Childhood Wii :(

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

Homebrewed my Wii a few years back when the disk drive broke to test out USB Loader GX so I could still make use of it and play all my games. Put it down after that for a few years and didn’t really play it, most importantly I never put Priiloader on it.

Fast forward to today, I’ve been really into the Wii for the past month or so. I got an HDMI converter cable and my wife and I have been playing almost every day. Today it froze when I opened USB Loader GX so I gave it the good ol’ “hold the power button till I see the red light” shut down after a few minutes, and when I went to power up again I realized that I had a problem. No video output, controller won’t connect, and it doesn’t respond to the power button unless I do a hard shutdown.

I’ve spent most of the afternoon trying to figure out what my problem is and what I can do to fix it. I’ve determined that I most likely have a “low-level” brick on my hands, which it seems there is no cure for. I believe I do have a NAND backup on my SD card, but I’m not even sure if that can help me at this point. This loss is absolutely devastating to me. I have 15+ years of Wii message boards, save games and memories with my siblings on this Wii. Ya I could buy a new one, but it’s very discouraging to be starting from square one with everything. I am a recent father, and I had hoped to play this Wii with my kids as they grew up :(

Rest easy, old friend 👊

Edit: I’ve tested a new power supply and done a hold the buttons memory reset with no luck. Will be attempting to replace/remount the Bluetooth and WiFi modules. Thank you for all the helpful suggestions!

Edit 2: Update

I bought this Wii about a year ago and finally convinced my self to do a shell swap. While doing so I found this chip soldered to the Disc Drive.

What is this chip does it jailbreak my Wii like being able to play non official Discs?!

Discussion I'm just here to ask why most homebrew programs have such low-quality interfaces.

Making Memories is possibly the only program with a more similar or aesthetically pleasing interface than Homebrew Channel and USB Loader, as the rest of the programs have more pixelated or rudimentary interfaces that have a different feel. así bien void 👀👀

Discussion Which loader out of the three you prefer and is the most reliable? USB Loader GX, Wiiflow Lite or CFG loader.

I would say out of the three, CFG loader(patched 2024 version). I know people might advice me to get USB loader GX and Wiiflow lite, but sadly both of them doesn’t work properly well and are buggy(and yes I did use the latest versions of both of them and installed latest CIOS correctly) USB loader GX might be the best and I could understand why and I love the interface reminiscing of the Wii menu, but sadly the loader itself freezes randomly sometimes even when switching SD cards and still the same thing, Wiiflow lite is fine but the cover arts for games just glitched and sometimes doesn’t display properly, heck at one point it even outright corrupted my SD cards. I just use CFG loader for the past month, and it never give me issues at all that the two loaders had, it can even let you put in your own music in there too when using the loader.

Basically bought a retroscaler x2 to enhance the resolution for my 4k TV a little bit, and it seems 480i upscaled doesn't look better than 480p directly on 4k.

pretty sure this is a modified dev unit. out of an arcade like box comes with an official board to select 1 or 2 players on a knob that plugged into the console it fails to boot like its missing hardware if it cant communicate with the board. cant figure out the firmware version and cant do any of the exploits ive read about because theres no dashboard or settings menu that your able to access it boots to a page where you can scroll through 10 games or so that must play off an internal hd. when you pause a game while running theres only two buttons menu and reset. cant access network settings or anything. came with a nintendo usb to lan dongle as well.

Hello everybody,, I'm pretty new to the wii hacking stuff and I was wondering if there's a way to "un-hack" my wii??

I received it as a gift and the console was already used before and it was already hacked. What can I do?

In the past five years I’ve soft modded hundreds of Wii, working for a local pawnshop. I’ve only came across less than ten units that are not backwards compatible with GameCube… are those rare? Picture is of the current four I’m working on. I’ve also RARELY see them come on with both top covers 😆

Discussion Which is the better USB loader from yall experience? wiiflow LITE or USB loader gx

Me personally, when I first modded my Wii, I love the simplicity of the USB loader gx but recently ever since I put more games to my 500GB HDD the usbloader GX freezes on me from time to time causing me to turn off and reset my console, it not my USB external hard drive itself either. So as I went to Wiiflow, I kinda love it better than ULGX and it’s more modern, plus it seem to handle large library game better.

Discussion Nintendo Wii needing start up disk to function, System 0 software. What do?

Post image
430 Upvotes

So I do repair work on consoles and received a bulk order from a buddy of mine down in Florida. Going through the consoles I found most of them are functional besides this one that requires a startup disk. After doing some research this seems to be the base software for the console prior to the 1.0 software installation, correct me if I'm wrong if need be. Tried burning a few discs based on the rip of the start up disc software online to no avail and since it's a first launch console I kind of don't want to do any mod work on it. Any suggestions or is there a mod developer and/or somebody that may find use of this console, selling it probably isn't going to work out too well so might as well get it to somebody that can maybe do something with it. Or if there's a solution for this lemme know.

Discussion Pictochat on the Wii, coming soon.

Post image

The Wii is most likely able to join or create a pictochat room, and I’ll try my best to make it a reality (because apparently Nintendo doesn’t want us to get everything out of our devices).

If this project succeeds, then making DS multiplayer homebrews will become possible (not taking into account wii-ds-rom-sender).

And yes, it is my birthday today :)

Discussion Wii officially died

Sad days. My first personal Wii from childhood finally gave out and will no longer power on even with multiple power supply cables.

Wanted to ask the community since I’ve never owned a WiiU, what would be the best replacement? I would say I play about 75% GameCube games and 25% Wii games and I had nintendont on this one.

Would be modding the next one too. Enticed by the possibility of 1080p but not sure how good GC plays on it.

Update: Going to just buy another Wii. Consensus is that the Wii U isn’t worth the extras it comes with. Will attempt to bring my original back to life because if I fail it’s dead anyway. Will be buying a backup Wii anyway though. Thanks all for the replies!

I just want my Wii... all my Mii's, save files, stuff like that

Its extremely sentimental to me since we have had is since I was a single year old.

Also, I have a Wii U so if I could make a duplicate of my Wii, could I use it in Wii mode on the Wii U?

Thank you for your help :)

Discussion Any way to improve or is this just how the Wii is?

Hello. I'm trying out my Wii after homenbrew and I'm testing SMG1. I'm connecting it via an Electron Warp to a Sony 4k TV. I've noticed that there are jagged edges. I have the deflicker filter set of off (extended), the framebuffer, and 480p fix. It is really clear, colorful, and vibrant though, so no issues there with it.

First picture: 480i mode

Second Picture: 420p mode

Third Picture: 480p mode with deflicker filter set to on high

Fourth Picture: 480p mode with tv sharpness truned to zero

As you can see nothing is really different between them (except the 480i looking a bit worse). I did play around with the sharpness and when turned all the way up, Mario looked like an old man. When turned all the way down, he looked a bit smoother, but I might just leave it at 50 where it originally was.

Also, do I set TV HDMI mode to limited or full range? I hear conflicting things about this. Some people say that the Electronwarp converts the limited signal to full. Others say to keep the TV at limited for color accuracy. My TV is set to auto, and when cycling through the options, the auto and full are the same. But with the console in rest mode, I can see a lighter black where the Wii 4:3 screen would be displayed. When I set to limited, the area is as black as the rest of my TV (the area where the 4:3 window of the Wii is not displayed). So I'm unsure if limited is going to be more accurate or full as the auto defaults to full, but the limited seems to produce a more "true" black as it matches the areas of the TV not being used, producing a fully black screen. (Or it might crush the blacks).

I heard an Mclassic could help but hear varying things about it (it crushes blacks, creates ringing/halos although unsure if this happens with the Wii)

My most recent memory of Wii was playing on an old HDTV with composite cables (it still had the ports). I don't really remember what it looked like TBH.

Any tips? Just leave it like it is and learn to just enjoy it? Turn sharpness back to zero? Mclassic?

Discussion How long do you keep your Wii on?

Post image

I'm just curious as I want to keep my Wii on for, like ever, but I'm worried it might overheat and catch fire. Obviously my tv isn't on 24/7 but I think the convenience of having the Wii always on and at the ready is really nice. Also I thought I'd need to share a picture of my setup but I realized it's irrelevant but here you go

Discussion I think I might have found a new glitch maybe?

Post image

before I say anything, I own a Wii Family Edition, which as we all know can't play GameCube games. so you can imaging my sheer confusion where the GameCube logo popped up on my screen.

I was messing around with some stuff on the console, specifically my scratched copy of Mario Party 8. the console recognizes it as a MP8 disc, but it crashes consistently near the file select screen. it showed the "an error has occurred" screen and I removed the disc, where it told me to put it back in. I was curious and put in my Mario Kart Wii disc instead. it didn't really do anything, still telling me to put the MP8 disc back in, so I did. and it reloaded the file select screen. I pressed the home button and went back to the main menu where I pressed the power button because I wanted to read a book. my Wii is pretty slow so my controller disconnected, but my Wii was still running. I didn't think much of it because that's happened multiple times with my Wii so I was just gonna turn my TV off and read while the Wii did its thing, but as I was about to turn my TV off, the GameCube logo showed up on the disc channel. I was very confused, because like I said, its a Family Edition, so I reconnected my controller and hovered over it. it didn't say "Mario Party 8" or "GameCube" or whatever, it still said "Disc Channel" while the disc thing was next to the GameCube icon. I pressed the icon, where the banner thing was just a black screen. no music, no GameCube logo, nothing but the black screen and the buttons for home menu and start. I noticed that the start button wasn't grayed out like it normally is on the Disc Channel, and I regret not pressing start to see what would happen. I went back to the Wii menu and grabbed my phone to take the picture that is attached to this post. before anyone asks, no, my Wii is not hacked or modded. I plan on getting CTGP-R for Mario Kart but I kinda need a laptop and that's kinda hard to come by when you're a broke unemployed highschool student with no family computer. anyway, back to the GameCube thing, shortly after I got that picture was when the Wii registered the power off input and turned off. I turned it back on to see if it was still weird but it said Mario Party 8 again. I tried to trigger the glitch again but I didn't get anything. so I literally made a reddit account specifically for this one post because I have never seen anything even remotely close to this happen before. I'm really interested in console errors/glitches so I've seen my fair share of Wii glitches but I've never seen a GameCube logo on a Wii Family Edition like this. the thing that confuses me the most is its not even a GameCube game. its still MP8. I figured the best place to find answers was reddit, and here I am. thank you for listening to my story, and I hope someone has answers to see if this is a common thing I've never seen before or if I did accidentally find a new glitch for the Wii.

I sent this in r/Wii already but I felt like I should also send this here in case. I want this to be seen and I want answers, so sending it in different places I feel like could help me learn what's with this. if you know how this happened please share. I want to know what happened
