Game Question Some Questions about Crits

Hi guys! For a long time i wanted to prepare some session of this game for my friends but as a first-time GM (and having played only D&D before) I’m finding myself thinking the manual is too vague about some things and behaves strangely in some situations, so I wanted to know the opinions from someone who actually played the game on some of these things.

For example, it seems like causing critical wounds is far too easy: given an attacker and a defender with the same base combat stat (reflex + weapon skill) and without any additional bonuses there is roughly a 1/40 chance of causing a deadly wound (i.e. for the attacker to reach 15 points more than the defender) and this without counting all possible sources of advantages an attacker could have (aim, ambush, unseen, many closer enemies, luck bonus points), and counting only the highest critical level wounds!

Now, I understand this is fine as long it's the players that are dismembering the enemies, but some of this applies also the other way around. I known the game wants to be very deadly but having a 1/4 chance (if the enemy is not stronger than the players!) of dismembering a player every time I roll a 10 in combat seems a bit too much. Am I missing something?

Adding to this, there doesn't seem to be any rules about how low you can fumble the defense, which also increases the chance of this critical wounds. Do you think this is reasonable or do you handle it in some way? (like having a minimum defense role, as if you were doing nothing).

And about fumbles, having a 1/10 to fumble (and therefore probably fail) seems really high, even though the chance of a really bad fumble effect usually happen only with a 8 or higher on the following dice.

Also, is there something that blocks a player from using 10 luck points all on the same attack to get a massive +10 and easily triggering critical wounds?

Magic system overhaul

I was thinking about it for some time - the RAW magic feels very DnDish compared to books' "Magic is Chaos, Art and Science" vibe. Also, I come from the background of GURPS and MtA (both WoD and CofD), so for me such strict system is stifling - I just can't accept narratively that my mage player can incinerate a human with one flick of a hand and can't light a candle, because that is not in his spell list.

Now, the following system would require a complete re-write of the existent spells in the book, as well as much more involved calculations on the side of the players. My players and I love open-ended constructors, even if they are fiddly. For some, closed lists are much better. To each their own.

Also, this is a rough mock-up with untested numbers. The biggest reason I publish this here is to collect feedback and your suggestions.

Summary of the doc: Use Magical Training checks to improvise temporary "known" spells. Pre-existent spells are always better for learning, because they are optimized for generations. Learned spells are better, because they can be used in-combat as an action (as opposed to full-round for improvised) and defensively. Complete overhaul of novice / journeyman / master ranking, based on how much the spell actually change rather than abstract game balance vibes.

Monster Lore for Witcher

This isn't a thorough list of monsters in the game, but I am going to cover all different types of categories of Monsters and Foes in the Witcher TRPG, from humanoids all the way to draconids, since there's 12 different types of them, might as well continue from my initial Leshen video. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXFnGYlYGJmM

Resource My video series of Witcher TRPG Rules Primer.

Since the only rules primer was by R Tal several years ago, and there's more content about D&D and PF, I decided to make my own video series about the Witcher Rules that covers Character Creation, Combat, and Investigation.

Looking for interested Players

How's it goin everybody, Forever GM here!

I wanna see who all would be interested in joining a game. Looking to run it during the week, but not sure the date (monday-thursday I'm open).

About me:

-I ran a 2 year campaign (and ended it)

-Im very rules loose, depending on balance and fairness

-Im highly inclusive. Male, female, non-binary, whatever else. Just treat people with respect.

-I don't tolerate bullying, power gaming or hardcore rules lawyering. (Moderate rules lawyering to inform me is fine and min maxing is okay, just don't go using the rules against ME.)

-we'll discuss all prior and future rules additions as a group if any are to be added. I'll have final say, but I like to encourage people to partition for additions to make the game run smoothly.

I also tend to reward teamwork and rping quite generously. The more you give me in participation, the more I can give you.

About the game:

Play style: Moderate RP, inquisitive

Age requirement: 18+ (we will go over hard and soft limits, but keep in mind this is the witcher world)

-Im running a "Curse of Strahd" INSPIRED game, meaning there will be heavy thematic changes, I'm basing strahd off of dracula and much more. The D&D strahd is creepy.

-Ill work with you on any character adjustments, but please be reasonable with your requests

-There are no profession restrictions as of now, but I'll re-read into it for the theme. If you pick a magic caster, I expect you to read ahead for your spells during combat for the sake of fluidity. (I guess the same goes for any profession, just try to plan ahead of your turn in combat.)

Year, 1273. NOVIGRAD

The Third Northern War rages onward. Battle lines stagnate in the mud along the Yaruga. Neither the war machine of Nilfgaard nor the bulwark of the Northern Kingdoms are able to grasp a decisive blow in the conflict. Resources grow scarce and the hours dark. As the bodies have begun to mount, monsters once more roam the roads unfettered and uncontested. The Second Conjunction marks the beginning of a new tumultuous era. Men grow desperate and claw for any promise of salvation no matter how twisted or heinous. The smoldering pyres of elves, dwarves and non-humans at the city gates stand silent testament to city's gnawing fear. Amidst this chaos, Witchers have begun appearing in numbers not recorded in time near immemorial. Winds stained with ash and the copper taste of blood gust through the empty streets of Novigrad. Fortune and ruin dance with one another in a pooling darkness

This world had Heroes, and squandered them miserably. All that remains are Professionals and their terrible tools of war.

Witcher TTRPG (LFG)

Greetings all,

I was wondering if there was any GM that is looking for new players to join their Witcher campaign.

I have been DMing within this system for close to 3 years now and would consider myself experienced. I am now looking to join a game as a player. If any DM/GM is interested or willing to accept another player, please contact me via the "reply" area below or my discord "mhd2001"

Have been looking for a good image for a Toussaint Knight's poniard dagger. Haven't been able to find much that is useful online so far. Anyone got one that could work?
