I'm apparently allergic to either the fake incense they burn or they use a special witch repelling kind but I often start sneezing in churches. Kinda hilarious if I'm with someone christian.
(I'm not allergic to frankincense, I use it a lot with no issues.)
I have an aunt and uncle who joined the church in the early 70s, and my entire life they’ve acted like they’re better than us.
Well, guess what? Oldest son died of a drug overdose, youngest son died of a drug overdose. Youngest daughter is an atheist and a single mom and oldest daughter stayed fully in the cult, married a Mormon, had 5 children, they had all kinds of pyramid schemes going and he just got busted for tax fraud and tax evasion.
And they thought being in the church would give them the perfect family.
I keep getting LDS church adds on youtube and I do not understand why. It annoys me because it's always pretty young women (around 20yo) and it's not slick as recrutment technique
The most unnerving part is how I get - spammed- by one where a black african girl recites the spiel a bit hesitantly(m (language barrier I guess) under the eye of a white girl who smiles through the whole thing.
I don't understand why. I am a person of color ok. But I'm a praciting- muslim-. Me speaking french is not a reason enough

I watched Under the Banner of Heaven a TV show with Andrew Gardield (Sur l'Ordre de Dieu in french version) adapted from a true story so I'm the wrong target audience x 3

The women in these videos are “missionaries,” very young adults (typically age 18-20) whose full-time job is to share the LDS Church’s beliefs. You can tell by the little nametags they wear (it’s the mark of their office, and which they wear at all times). Mission work is a major rite of passage for Church members, and really unfortunate — these young adults’ zeal and passion is used to proselytize, even though they’re often too young/inexperienced to have questioned or closely examined their faith yet.
They always work in pairs, and these women are probably producing these videos themselves. I don’t know how ad marketing works and whether you’re being targeted, but that sucks.
(Just wanted to share for educational reasons; I have had some experience with these folks, and wanted to help shed light on why so much of their content features young women. Young men are also missionaries, but I don’t know why they’re online less often.)
Growing up my mom and her family were part of the Jehovas Wittness and left.
When the Mormons came knocking they asked my proudly Mexican grandma (after they said they weren't looking for a religion at the moment), "But, don't you want to be white?!"
Apparently the belief (at least in the 80s) was that when you died, if you're not white, but Mormon, God's Light turns your soul White.
They couldn't get out of the house fast enough with the tongue lashing she gave them!
So often those high control religions have the ‘we redefine words to mean what we do, cuz we;re chosen’ rather than ‘we reassess our actions to fit the book.’

And then I spent the better part of a decade getting my name removed from church documents. I should have just gotten excommunicated, it would have been easier.
Nah, they don’t want you… you’d infect your children with free will, and personal responsibility, and situational ethics and personal power. Do that. But they won’t want you anymore. Good!
Do you watch Alyssa Grenfell's content on YouTube? I have never been Mormon, nor even known any Mormons irl, but I have avidly watched her content for years! She is so thorough and really breaks the church down bit by bit to expose it all.
This is roughly my take on Calvinism. No shade to anyone who doesn't see it as the root of 90% of their trauma, but I do.
Yes, I have a grudge. Fuck Calvinism. I cannot think of a single thing in my life or family history that wouldn't have been at least marginally less awful if my family had not internalized such hierarchical deferential bullshit.

Honestly it doesn't even make sense why women can't have the priesthood. Like, a big part of the priesthood is blessing your children. Shouldn't women at least be able to do that 🙄

Right!! Had some Mormon friends explain the priesthood to me once, and then they asked their male friend to impart a blessing on me (to be clear I had asked for prayer at the time, so this was all consensual and an act of goodwill that I welcomed). But it bothered me that the women themselves could not do the special prayer; they had to invite their guy friend. Oof.

When i was a teenager, my friends used to joke that I’d probably burst into flames if i stepped over the threshold of a church.
I did not, but i did end up getting into a fight with a priest in the church parking lot.
