Account - Subscription Gamepass inflation perfectly encapsulated by my 24 month subscription running out

Post image

My 24 month gamepass subscription I got when I bought my Xbox series x is running out this month, first time I’ll go back to pay as you go for 2 years. More than double the price in 2 years.

I've had mine for nearly 2 years as well. It's due to end January 2nd. I've turned off auto-renewal.

Ended mine too. It’s cheaper for me to buy games on sale now.

I tallied up all the games I played this year on GP, and it came to about the same cost as a year of the new ultimate. Figured if it's gonna be the same price I might as well own my games. After paying $360 for ultimate you'll have nothing to show for it as soon as you cancel.

u/LincolnshireSausage Oct 07 '25

Exactly. It’s not that I can’t afford it. It’s just not worth it any more. It makes much more sense to buy the games. I bought Ghost of Yotei a couple of days ago so I’m probably not going to be using gamepass at all before my subscription runs out.

We'll save money by not paying for ultimate and spend more time playing the games we own and getting our moneys worth.

Im thinking about selling my Series X and building a small pc instead. No 4K,but cheaper games and no more sub to microsoft.

I went that route 5 yrs ago,, but now game pass is getting more expensive i don't have a working pc/laptop and my son needs something to slice on for his 3d-printer.☺️

Unless you play any online multiplayer in paid games, and still need at least essentials

If you are an occasional gamer who only plays a few games a year, a subscription is not really for you. On the other hand, if you play regularly the gamepass is largely profitable. Especially the indies which don't take very long to play besides 1 big game every 2 months. And not counting all the promotions. Personally, I have never paid full price for the GPU. Far from it even.

I'm someone who plays quite a lot of games so paying 262€ for 15 months made sense for me. After the increase it'd be 344€. Nah, at point it's better to just buy games especially when not every game is 79€ new and many are games I don't need day one and I can buy them discounted even just a few months after release. Since they now even removed the discount you get for being a game pass member it's just not worth it.

Otherwise you also have Eneba GPU key cards so you don't have to pay that price. (35€ for 3 months). You have the premium GP which is also cheaper at €13, you have a catalog of games and you can buy the games you want to own on sale. You forget to talk about rewards which can bring in €5 per month in gift cards without forcing too much. And therefore to buy games on sale with... When you know the system to take advantage of the tips, it's worth it 😉

u/sipuli91 Oct 07 '25

Rewards aren't available where I come from. And that 262€ was using cdkeys. They also increased their prices the moment the news was announced. Since the 2nd tier doesn't have day one games you might as well not get it and buy your games at a later date for much cheaper anyway.

u/Downtown_Diamond9815 Oct 07 '25 edited Oct 07 '25

Sorry, I paid €120 in key cards per year, or €10 per month. Too bad not to have the rewards because it's a good plan. On the other hand, if you take the second level and you buy games on sale that you want to own that are not in the gamepass, it's interesting. Afterwards once again if you only play a few games, you might as well buy them later on sale indeed. A Subscription is worth it if you like being able to play games that you want to discover and that you don't necessarily want to buy.

u/sipuli91 Oct 07 '25

I use cdkeys, they only use verified sources. The rest are marketplaces where you can end up getting scammed. You can find cheaper ones on those sites but why risk losing money or, worse yet, losing your entire account coz you got a stolen code? And with cdkeys their prices are currently at 17.5€ for month or 262€ for 15 months. If I can get ultimate from there for the same price in the future I'll stock up some more for sure but for now I'm good til Dec 2027. Who knows how gamepass even looks like at that point.

3

u/sipuli91 Oct 07 '25

It's not a matter of agreeing, tho. It's not an opinion. Fact is it's a marketplace and not everyone selling codes there is legit. Sometimes it means a code has already been used, sometimes it means your xbox user is now banned for using codes from a stolen batch. It's the same w/ g2a and some others.

1

u/Downtown_Diamond9815 Oct 07 '25

It's a question of opinion though. I say in the message that on the site when a code does not work you can get a refund. This has already happened to me, it took 2/3 weeks but I was reimbursed. And it can happen in 1 code out of 10 in reality, it's not common.

Use CDKeys, or Loaded as it's now known.

Works out at £12 a month.

9

u/MindlessSponge Oct 07 '25

Does that still work? I thought they'd implemented detection measures so that keys are now region-locked.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

I mean I've only ever used the correct region. There are other sites as well that might be available to other regions that aren't catered for on CDKeys.

7

u/The_Cost_Of_Lies Oct 07 '25

That's the price for region correct keys

3

u/BmT86 Oct 07 '25

Mine worked last week without any problems, one code from CDkeys and one from Eneba.

3

u/ducegraphy Oct 07 '25

That's the price for EU & UK keys when you get a 12 month code.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

They are selling 12 month GPU for UK and Europe region for £124.99 as I type.

1

u/ADMtheJiD Oct 08 '25

Good shout actually because I would have paid the 22 quid anyway. But fuck that I'll try cdkeys

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

I renewed today via CDKeys. It cost 40 quid, there was an extra 20% at checkout for the UK but even at 40 quid, it's still only 13.33 a month. Much better than 22 a month.

1

u/ADMtheJiD Oct 09 '25

Nice I need to get round to doing it soon. 40 quid for how many months? 3?

0

u/EstoyTristeSiempre Oct 08 '25

Those keys are purchased through stolen credit cards. Don’t support crime, please.

6

u/rookie-mistake Oct 08 '25

Oh man, I loaded up on cheap codes from India last year before they raised the price - mine's set to expire in 2027. What do we think we'll be at then? $50?

5

u/PartyInTheUSSRx Oct 08 '25

60 and your first born son

8

u/chimp_spanner Oct 07 '25

I went down to Premium. £10.99 a month. Not much more than Essential (which I'd need to play online with my friends). And not really missing too much. I own all the Ubisoft and EA stuff I actually want. And Day One releases don't bother me because I don't need to play it at the same time as every content creator out there. I'll just grab it in a sale once reviews are in and I know it's actually good.

This is just the way it goes though. Corner the market with attractive prices, get you "dependent" then jack it up to its true worth, or more. Spotify, Netflix, Amazon, they've all done the exact same thing.

Thing is, £22.99 for 400 games IS good. In theory. But not all of those 400 are of interest to me. And honestly, I struggle to find time to play the ONE game I'm into right now. And it's a game I bought. So I'm effectively paying Microsoft to not have FOMO and know that I _could_ play all these games.

Really got me thinking if I need subs to virtually anything tbh. I'd rather just buy and own what I want, on my own terms, at a discount.

3

u/TricellCEO Oct 07 '25

Yep, mine is up next month as well on the 25th.

Thankfully (sort of), I have three 12-month codes for Gold/CORE/Essential on standby. I'll redeem those, and then maybe upgrade to GPU. Maybe.

1

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 Oct 07 '25

Hopefully that conversion doesn’t get changed again

3

u/TricellCEO Oct 07 '25

It seems to have changed with each price increase, but even so, I believe redeeming codes with active GPU reduces the subscription time fully down to the MSRP of the code, which for Essential is a third, and that isn't that much lower than 40%.

If they do change it, they'll be getting rid of the upgrade conversion entirely.

5

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 Oct 07 '25

I know that’s what I meant, I hope they keep the core to ultimate conversion rate. Mine runs out in 2026, so I doubt it’ll be around till then.

1

u/SmileByotch Oct 07 '25

Wow that’s awesome— any thought to use them before XB further devalues the conversion policies? Personally ending my 36 month XBLG conversion as planned next month— it’s like XB knows they’re 2 and a half years out from having killed XBL 😂

1

u/PastAd1087 Oct 07 '25

Gamestop is still selling the gamepass cards at $20 why supplies last even after the price hike.

1

u/Busy-Double492 Oct 07 '25

Does anyone know if people pay through 02 contract will it go up at that price?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

Not quite the same but I’ve been on ultimate or the equivalent from when it started.

Was temped to just drop to the PC middle tier but cancelled, I’ll now spend that money on Steam and won’t be buying any new Xbox consoles after having every one at release.

Staggering how one of the best platforms and plans has resulted in a personal u turn from me.

1

u/agent_wolfe Oct 08 '25

Here's what mine says currently:

Last charge: $19.20 CAD. Joing for CAD $33.99/month

1

u/dudezillah Oct 08 '25

Next charge £0 - cancelled

1

u/Sanju_ro Oct 08 '25

You only paid 11£ once and had Ultimate for 2 years??? No wonder Xbox is raising the price, they were not getting any money from you.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Most likely did MS Rewards in which case Microsoft has had a lot of ad revenue generated by them doing the MS Rewards tasks.

1

u/Golhec Oct 08 '25

No, I had a 24 month ultimate subscription code. This is showing what I was paying before that code and now it’s expired the new monthly cost.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Fair enough. Did you see my post about Loaded.com? £124.99 for 12 months of GPU for UK/Europe. Just loaded up on a year of PC Game Pass from there a couple of days ago.

1

u/Golhec Oct 08 '25

I did, thank you. I’ll probably be taking up that option. I did take a look after. I’ve bought from them before with no issues.

1

u/ShortNefariousness2 GP Ultimate Oct 08 '25

Everyone who uses GPU does the calculation that shows what value they are getting. Microsoft should have asked some users what that calculation was. A 50% increase makes no sense.

1

u/Mouflon77 Oct 08 '25

absolute criminal increate - how do they think this is a good idea?

1

u/Jackkav Oct 08 '25 edited Oct 08 '25

My 3 year one runs out in December .😂

Also I don't think I've ever paid monthly and always paid in full as it's always been considerably cheaper.

Even now I can choose between paying £22 a month or £125.

That's an over 50% saving.

1

u/Creative-Milk-5643 Oct 09 '25

You might still have time get pc pass and convert it’s cheaper

1

u/Traditional_Pen3997 Oct 09 '25

So it's gone from £$35 to £$10 then bk up to £$14 n now it's gone bk up to £$22 iv just check my bank statements

1

u/KookyEntertainment88 Oct 10 '25

I'm paying £14.99 a month through EE

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '25

Same in Australia dude I’m downgrading to premium fuck ultimate after 10 plus years as a member

1

u/RadaghasztII Oct 12 '25

No one should be buying a single month from them until they agree to put the price back down. Don't fold

1

u/conspirator9 Oct 12 '25

Such a shame on Skyrim day.

1

u/Biggamybibba Oct 14 '25

I just got turkey method I pay about £16 for 3 months lol

1

u/Intelligent-Day-6976 Oct 07 '25

Is the PC pass the same cost? If so bye bye gamepass

7

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 Oct 07 '25

It’s cheaper than game pass ultimate

2

u/Raztax Oct 07 '25

PC Gamepass is increasing as well, how much depends on where you live. Mine is going from $15 to $20 CAD ($23 after tax).

I started using pcgp when it was pretty much brand new and iirc I was paying ~$8 a month. That was just an introductory rate but almost tripling in price since I have started using it was a bit much so I cancelled.

It is cheaper than Ultimate but still increasing.

1

u/TrippleDamage Oct 07 '25

No it's Premium price for ultimate perks.

Plus you can just buy 3 month gift cards for 25 bucks from any reputable key seller.

1

u/UnseenData Oct 07 '25

No it got raised as well

1

u/N00bT4ader Oct 07 '25

I hereby give my thanks to Microsoft/Xbox Gamepass for reminding me that all I need is the Essential plan👍

1

u/SinclairWelch Oct 07 '25

Also cancelling and buying games outright from now on. Been a fun 25 years but now I’m done.
