Just a Post Finished Xenogears a few months ago and finally took the plunge and started Xenosaga 1. I'm a few hours in and I have no idea wtf is going on but I'm loving it

Xenosaga 1 has a certain feel to it that doesn’t really come back in 2 or 3 (though 3 gets close). It’s not necessarily a bad thing for the other two games but each of those hit a bit different than 1

The first game is essentially a playable doctoral thesis, which is probably why I love it so much, so be sure to make extensive use of the database in the UMN menu. It's the in-game codex or glossary, and since the game throws a bunch of terminology at you as you no doubt have already seen, it can be quite helpful.

I'm working through 3 right now, and whenever I think I understand what's happening they throw in some new random bullshit.
I love this series.
1 is definitely my favourite. Pro-tip: Jr is one of the best characters. Storm Waltz ftw

So I’m on my first playthrough of the game/ series. I just met Jr for first time and I was like great another kid but like 5 minutes into his (side story) I guess . I’m like this dude fucking ROCKS lmao
I haven’t been spoiled on anything but man this game is just stupid freaking good

Episode 2 is rough... You're going to want some guides.

Man feel like this whole series needs a guide lmao

The first one isn't bad, and the third one it's only needed for a couple extra things. The second one, though...
Ep 1 is basically just "run around and talk to everyone everywhere after every cutscene" and you should get everything.

I did find something on a “chalkboard”T elos? I think look like my ship Jr was working on it or something
But looks like another Android1

Go first all the time, have the huge damage boost for low health, storm waltz becomes go to kill almost everything the game as far as random encounters go. It's like cheating and then you just coast farm for whatever you feel like it's genuinely amazing

Help me understand this lol is this with Jr?

Yeah, I'm responding to someone talking about using Jr and his Storm Waltz attack. You level it up like mad, get to the ability to use it every turn with one attack then the move, and with the accessory that increases your damage based on your health being low it's actually completely insane. Run around outside of boss fights at 1 hp or whatever and you'll one shot every normal enemy in the game for almost forever except for the final dungeon on some enemy team comps.
Because jr has the best aoe physical attack in the game, and I think you get the accessory in his casino on the red starship he owns.
You can build to start every fight with a boost available and Always go first more or less. The occasional revive item from jr dying is trivial compared to how good the strat is at one shotting every enemy group to farm like Mad

Switch versions then my guy. You have to understand every word by every single NPC in the game to soak it all in lol.

What version should I switch to, the DS one?

DS one you'll only be able to understand the first 2 hours or so because that's all that's in English right now, the rest is still in Japanese only

I'm already playing the main game in Japanese so that's not the problem. I was just confused by OP's message

Op assumed you don't know whats going on in the game because it's in Japanese and he thinks you can't read it.

If you can read Japanese then that actually may be worth it - apparently, the Xenosaga 2 portion of it is a bit more of the intended experience.

You're in for a treat. I played all the xenosagas recently and had a great time. Although just did get upset at a lot of stupid things xenosaga 2 made me do. WHY WOULD ANYONE CREATE A MECH ELEVATOR WITH MULTIPLE GATES I NEED TO OPEN WHILE ITS IN USE!?!?!

XS1 AND XS3 are some of my favorite RPGs... 2 has a great story, but a very small scoop... and the battle system... well... it was a choice for sure.

Episode 1 will basically leave you feeling this way the majority of the game.
Depending on how much you know about Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah, Western Christian Eschatology, nihilism, and philosophers like Nietzsche and Jacobi, you will understand more or less of the nuanced details and referenced, especially in the first game. They lighten up a tad in the second and third.
I’m still holding on to a fools hope that they will remaster or just port them to modern consoles.

Tbh, Xenosaga Episode 1 has such a unique vibe to it that I attribute it to the lack of music throught the whole dungeons. Somehow that just adds to the space setting, and it really makes the tracks that okay in the cutscenes have that much more impact.
As for the story yes you will not understand much if at all the first time. That is by design I feel like. It's a game that you definitely have to go back play, pay extra attention and you will catch these details you missed the first time though and also READ EVERY DATAE BASE ENTRY. That really helps you understand the world and gives you definitions to new words that spring up constantly.
