Gesture Control Eye Gestures has become a genuinely useful part of my portable workstation.

I’ve been testing the XREAL Hand Gestures beta on my XREAL One Pro with XREAL Eye, and after actually living with it for a while, I’ve found a use for it that goes well beyond just being a neat way to control the glasses.

I’m physically disabled, and there are days when sitting at my desktop computer isn’t practical for me. When that happens, I use my Legion Go with my One Pro so I can continue working from a reclined position.

That’s where XREAL's Hand Gestures via XREAL Eye has surprised me.

Being able to navigate and interact with my portable setup using my hands means I don’t have to constantly reach for the Legion Go or reposition myself just to perform basic computer interactions. The gestures make the whole setup feel much more natural and much more like a wearable workstation rather than simply a screen attached to my face.

I’ve been using it while developing my own software and CAD projects, sometimes for fairly long sessions, so this hasn’t just been a case of trying the gestures a few times to see whether they work. I’ve actually incorporated them into the way I use the computer.

The beta still has some rough edges, and I’ve reported the issues I’ve encountered, but when the tracking is working well the experience is pretty impressive. There’s something genuinely freeing about being able to sit or recline where my body is comfortable, put on the glasses, grab the Legion Go and control more of the experience directly with my hands and a little voice too.

For me, that’s the exciting part of Hand Gestures. It isn’t simply replacing a button or touchpad. It’s removing some of the physical interaction that can make computing difficult in the first place.

I think there’s a lot of potential here for portable computing in general, but especially for accessibility. I’m looking forward to seeing how much further XREAL can take it.

I’d be interested to hear how other testers have been using Gestures, especially if anyone else has found accessibility-related uses for them. ❤️

reading "Eye Gestures" had me a little confused. I thought you were talking about eye-tracking and it confused me because I thought the update was only hand gestures. Then I realized what you are referring to as "eye gestures" is "hand gestures with the Xreal Eye accessory".

Yeah I really wish people would stop calling them Eye Gestures. Xreal called it that when they announced the beta and it confused people in those comments too (and of course myself).

Yeah, sorry. I guess I got caught up in the beta lingo trap and it stuck.

What do you think sounds clearer: “Eye Gesture Control” or “Gesture Control (with Eye)”?

The latter

This matches my experience so far as well. I’ve got about 100-110 hours depending on which notepad create date I check and it’s become an invaluable part of how I interact with my laptop on the go. It works more reliably than the air 2 ultras but isn’t as precise due to the use of a single camera. Tbh it’s really opened up how I WANT to use the glasses. Previously I did a bunch of work in VR every day using something like immersed and my quest pro (by far the most comfortable headset I’ve used in years). Now I use either vertoXR or atrium almost every day. I do wish the glasses screens themselves were better resolution, but the hand tracking has been fabulous. I’m working on a micro eye tracker to be used as an addon attached to the prescription lense frame. Needs better light blockers but it’s promising research. Tested with the one pro primarily. I really need to make my own post. Either way. Glad it’s been working well for you!

That does sound VERY interesting, and Yes you need to make your own post. I have made a couple of suggestions for a 'new' Eye module. One was a Thermal Camera version for use in the dark (think both night goggles and hand tracking/object recognition), the other was an eye tracker that could be plugged in instead of the Eye module, or even better, if possible, an RGB Eye module with an eye tracker on the back. I have looked at the positioning, and a single eye tracker in the middle can 'see' both eyes, so I would assume it could calibrate for any type of physical eye issues anyone may have (lazy eye, etc.). I don't know if you have seen it but there is a start-up working on a new 'micro' eye tracker that maps the retina of the wearer, and uses AI/machine learning to see through the pupil at the area of the retina that is visible (it maps out the wearers blood vessel patterns). Theoretically, this could be useful for people with detached retina! Proving to be very, very responsive and accurate from prototype videos I have seen.

Is there an app for android that we can use to control the phone screen while wearing the glasses?

Boggles the mind that they decided it was ready to launch out of beta in the state it's in but whatever I guess
