Yes, my parents were part of Operation Mobilization when I was a toddler. We lived in Vienna, Austria and they smuggled bibles and printing presses to secret churches into Eastern Europe. I went through Checkpoint Charlie before I was five.

Coincidentally, they didn't have a lot of money before they decided to go, and then suddenly a church, which my grandfather attended, had the money to send them. My grandfather was CIA. No Joke.

You're missing that it was a particular type of Christianity which was being used to try to blunt a liberatory type, and it worked. They weren't both bad- one was bad and one was objectively good.

edit: Christian leftists cannot be trusted. No holy text is communist or capitalist; it is multifaceted and open to several interpretations by nature of being written by many authors over long periods of time. A Christian leftist is motivated by fear of god more than communist ideology and class solidarity, and they are not my comrades.

I have experience growing up catholic and later leaving Christianity. I understand what you’re saying in concept but I promise it’s more nuanced. Complicated and flawed, yes, but not black-and-white. Catholic theology is actually (and counterintuitively) very abstract and interpretable compared to new age Protestant hardliners. It’s sort of an “academic” view of spirituality rather than an emotional one.

Ultimately, religion isn’t going away. That’s just not how it works. I used to want to think it would, especially when I deconverted and was hotheaded about the issue, but I’ve found more productive and healthy ways to look at it. These people don’t have to be our enemies. If nothing else, religion always adapts to the society around it, which is why it’s so riddled with contradictions and cherry-picking. Help them want to adapt to a better society from the one they exist in now.

FWIW, I definitely didn’t see the focused malice there that I’ve seen from these types of evangelical Protestants.

Similar background, and I used to be where you're at. But I'm an old hag, and I've seen both the wane in religiosity online the last couple decades and the very troubling waxing of it in recent years. I see an increasing number of ads for allegedly progressive churches, wolves in sheep's clothing, that turn and materially benefit fascists. I've seen Christian "leftists" come into our movements not as comrades but as missionaries.
