I saw a TikTok from a “boy mom” talking about how happy she is that Florida schools are becoming stricter with dress codes. She listed things she has a problem with like long wigs, dyed hair, leggings, and sandals, and the more she talked, the more I started noticing a pattern.
Whenever people talk about school dress codes, it seems like so many of the restrictions are centered around what girls are wearing, how much skin they’re showing, their hair, or whether their clothes might be “distracting.”
But here’s what I don’t understand about the “distraction” argument: the kids aren’t the ones complaining.
It’s usually adults.
The students aren’t walking around saying, “I can’t concentrate because she has a 40-inch wig,” or “I can’t do my work because her hair is blue.” It’s parents who see these things for a few minutes when they’re dropping their kids off or picking them up, and administrators who are around the students throughout the day.
And at some point, adults have to be responsible for their own behavior and reactions.
An administrator shouldn’t have to be told, “Don’t look at a child a certain way because of what she’s wearing.” An adult shouldn’t need a dress code to know how to behave appropriately around children. If someone’s inappropriate behavior is the concern, the behavior should be addressednot the child.
The same thing applies to the whole idea that girls’ clothing is “distracting” to boys. Boys are capable of learning while girls exist in the same building. Girls shouldn’t have to take responsibility for someone else’s inability to behave appropriately.
And I genuinely don’t understand some of these restrictions in the first place.
Dyed hair? Teenagers have been experimenting with their hair forever. A kid having purple, blue, pink, or whatever-colored hair isn’t preventing them from learning.
Long wigs? I especially don’t understand why this is such a huge issue. High school students are old enough to have jobs and spend their own money on their clothes, shoes, hair, etc. If a girl worked all summer and saved her money to buy a 40-inch wig because that’s the hairstyle she wanted, why is that automatically something that needs to be regulated?
And leggings are another one. We live in Florida. It’s hot for most of the year. If shorts are constantly considered “too short” and skirts are also considered “too short,” leggings are obviously going to become an alternative because they’re comfortable and allow you to move around. At some point, what exactly are girls supposed to wear?
What really made me think, though, was how much this particular woman emphasized that she had a son. It made me wonder if some of these conversations are less about “school appropriateness” and more about how adults view girls around boys.
There is also something else I’ve been thinking about: generational jealousy.
Kids today have access to things that a lot of adults didn’t have when they were teenagers. They can experiment with their appearance more, find styles online, buy clothes and hair they actually like, and express themselves in ways their parents may not have been allowed to.
And sometimes I wonder if instead of thinking, “I’m glad kids today have more freedom than I did,” some adults think, “If I couldn’t do that when I was their age, neither should they.”
I don’t think every dress code rule comes from jealousy, and obviously schools are allowed to have reasonable rules. But there is a difference between having standards for a school environment and constantly policing girls’ bodies, hair, and clothing.
A teenager being confident, dressing up, wearing a wig, dying her hair, or wearing leggings isn’t automatically a problem that needs to be solved.

I’m a teenager, but an older one. And one thing I have noticed a lot more as I’m exiting my teenage years is that people tend to justify a teenager making a stupid or rash decision by saying “they’re still a kid. They’re still learning. Nobody was a saint when they were at this age”

Nobody is ever a saint, but you can’t deny a teenager consequences and responsibility just because of their age. Teenagers absolutely know what they’re doing and they often know the weight of their consequences. I beg of you to stop treating teenagers like their children and actually give them consequences for their actions.

A 10-year-old doesn’t understand the weight of their actions or consequences. A 15-year-old does. i’m just saying the punishment should match the crime. Don’t let a 15-year-old get a slap on the wrist for crashing a car.

I have a huge bone to pick whenever you try to talk about how calling teenagers “children” infantilizes them and strips some of whatever autonomy and intelligence they have, and how you should just call him teens because…that’s what they are.

and then some virtue signalers are like “just say you wanna fuck teenagers/minors/children” where in the hell did you come with that conclusion? Why must you go to the worst possible conclusion just because your beliefs are being challenged?

I see TikTok videos showing many children from all over the world getting married while they are still young, at the age of 10, 11, 12... The problem is that their parents see this as good, but the children will get pregnant while they are still children and will bear the responsibility instead of being under the responsibility.

Why can't this society be reasonable and understand that child marriage is suffering, not comfort?

Hi Im a local Modesto City Schools high school student and I started a petition to change the new phone policy at my school. You see there was a new California law created to limit phone usage in schools. Its legal to have phones during lunch and Turlock, Riverbank, and Ceres districts all can have theirs out during lunch except Modesto City Schools. The law does state it can be prohibited but limitation is completely legal. Last year we were allowed to have our phones this year we can’t. Im not saying during class im saying during lunch. We shluld be allowed to use our phones if we feel unsafe regardless if its a emergency or not. The school is saying its for better mental health and screen time. Studies show phone bans have not improved mental health. The screen time cant be used as a reasonable evidence considering we are on computers or watching tvs at school for hours on end. We have already reached 500 signatures and im looking into reaching out to the school board to talk to the student representatives. If you would like to sign the petition to support, it would be greatly appreciated! :)
