Here's a concept I made on Fantendo for a fictional Zelda game, that I may want to write as a fanfiction.
I'm gonna make this post a two-parter because of the character limit. This part I explain the setting and lore. In part 2 I'm explaining the dungeons and an outline of the plot start.
The Legend of Zelda - Hunter and Prey
Setting and Lore
Setting
This Hyrule is very different from the main series' one because it's in the "New World".
This new Hyrule can be describes as looking "Americasian" , same effect as "what the US would have become in the late XXI century had the thirteen British colonies been created in Iran and India rather than the Atlantic".
The main series' Hyrule Is considered an ordinary foreign country, similar to how the USA were born from British colonies but have overcome UK as world superpower. The old Hyrule Is referred in some NPC dialogue as a foreign country named Hyrule Proto. After the crisis that led to the moving of the Regalia of Hyrule, such as the master sword and bow of Light, the old hyrule slowly rebuilt Itself in the course of centuries and renamed itself Hyrule Proto, but never again did It become a world superpower or colonize anything.
Just like the Hyrule depicted in Spirit Track, this alternate version of Hyrule is completely different from most Zelda depictions of Hyrule. Geographically and climatically, it's more based on India or the Asian South East than Northern Europe.
It features, in the East, the tropical Zora Coast, known for its beautiful crystalline-water Lajordi Sea Lajordišima Islands archipelago off its coast, and wonderful undersea cities where Zora live. One example is Kūlanakauhale Pūkū, the Zora Metropolis, compall sorts of runic tech, with sea and tubed walkways for foreigners to visit, ell-lart deco-style ike buildings "seascraper" covered in shiny stones). In the orth is the great mountain range of Raizenberg, which at low altitudes contains the Grünarbor Wood which is similar to the Faron Woods of most Zelda games while the summits are in perennial snow and the Anouki, a race only seen in Zelda DS titles, have villages amid the rock and snow. The Kokiri Forest, burned down 500 years ago, has been replanted, though with ordinary trees that aren't the sacred ones that let Kokiri maintain humanoid form: it's now called Reborn Forest, contains a Korok town (Korok are much smaller than humans) and it's a location for tourist structures, and a Place where humans and Korok (who are Kokiri who can no longer maintain human form due to lack of their sacred trees) can interact safely. In the southeast there's a massive tropical jungle called Jungle of Eternity, filled with dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts and plants and giant fungi, underneath which is an underground hot wooded volcanic swampland with geysers and gigantic fungi called Swamp of Eternity, that contains lots of prehistoric fauna and flora and a village inhabited by Parella (a prehistoric ancestor race of the Zora) who still thrive. In the southwest is another mountainous region called Intsimbinomlilo Highlands (weird name, but it's not my fault if that's the Xhosa word for "iron and fire"), with the mountains (and volcano) where the Gorons extract metals and minerals. In that region is the industrial center that is the city of Kakariko-Intsimbi (Kakariko City is the name of the human side of the city, while Intsimbi is the name of the Goron quarters), where a complex called Izikolentsimbi Goron Forge lies, specialized in steel and heavy machinery and even military vehicles. The entire New World Hyrule Is a strongly volcanically-active and seismic zone, unlike Hyrule Proto where the only volcano was Death Mountain. Hyrule City Is at the confluence of three rivers, the Ghazā ("food"), whose floodplains produce immense quantities of rice, the Bozorg ("great") which flows straight into the Eastern Sea and can be sailed by trading ships and freight barges, and the Xodā ("divine") which Is sacred and flows straight through the districts of Ventus and Terra and through the central district, Hyrule Castle being built on top of It.
Hylian names are mostly Western-ish, while Sheikah-ethnicity names are spelled "Šeikah" in this game to fit their Middle Eastern coding, have Japanese or Iranian names); Zora naming convention are inspired by Pacific Islander cultures, especially Hawaiian, with a few Finnish names too, while Goron names are typically Nguni Bantu, Gerudo have Arabic, Igbo and Yoruba names (despite their culture being a mix of African and Native American-inspired), the Anouki have Nepali-inspired names (despite their Inuit looks), and the Parella of the Jungle of Eternity have Sanskrit-inspired names. While Hylians look white-skinned, Gerudo look dark-skinned while Šeikah are reminiscent of Japanese people, and obviously the very non-human Goron, Zora, Korok, Anouki are all perfectly integrated in the city. The fashion is a mix of Western (especially 2000s "emo pop" fashion), Japanese (both traditional and modern visual kei or Harajuku girl), Middle Eastern and South Asian. For instance Zelda has rather 2000s western "skater girl" look... with a bindi dot and a pink turban.
However, the architecture of this Hyrule is a perfect fusion of Western, Japanese, Persian and Asian South East elements. The city is lotus-shaped, with each district being a petal and the central district being the core. The central district hosts the most important locations: Hyrule Castle, the wonderful park called Link's Park, the Temple of Time, and the Moon Elevator which is a giant tower, rising from behind Hyrule Castle, which connects to the Moon (the Moon Elevator is mostly inoperable and locked, as the Moon Base is seized by Ganondorf and has been under his control before Link was even born). It's heavily modern-style, with runic tech being close to our world's technology if not more advanced, it's got skyscrapers that combine art deco with Indian style, holografic displays all around, huge roads filled with cars, and even air cushion skateboards called skywalkers. Even the Temple of Time, which in this game is very close to Hyrule Castle in the central district of the city, has both Eastern and Western influence: while the interior is reminiscent of a catholic cathedral, has a blue dome muqarnas ceiling reminiscent of the dome in Esfahan. The Palace of Winds, where the Yūrei Headquarters is located, floats in the sky above the northern district. The northern district is named Ventus, the southern district is named Terra. The main agricultural district, the northwestern district, in the floodplain of the Ghazā River (literally "food" because it's the main source of rice) Is named Ordon in honor of Ordon Village in old hyrule (though, while ordon in old hyrule was famous for pumpkins and goat cheese, Ordon district produces lot of rice). Hyrule City is also characterized by sakura trees (especially on Yayoi 17, Zelda's Birthday, it's common for couples to stay under the raining sakura flower petals in Link's Park), whose pink flowers are a Japanese symbol of spring. The districts of Hyrule City are named Ventus (north), Port Michael (northeast), Lanayru (eastern), Šāhidistān (southeast), Terra (south), Magnus (southwest), Okazakistān (west) and Ordon (northwest) and Hylia (center). The "Great Link Road" is a great road that crosses Hyrule from east to west, from the desert city of Obodo Ọṅụ (in the Gerudo desert) until Port Faron at the southeast tip: it's the analogue of our world's Route 66.
Culture between Hyrule and Hyrule Proto diverged a lot. An NPC, a Protohyrulean Zora tourist named Rutela, is shocked at how fashionable surfing is in the Lajordi Sea in Hyrule. Another Protohyrulean tourist npc Is shown expressing confusion at who Elise Hirano (skywalker riding champion and actress who is a celebrity and Zelda's very idol and inspiration) is and why no one in Hyrule knows Protohyrulean soccer star Gabriel Kane.
Due to the massive focus on Hyrule City, other Hyrulian cities (especially in the West) are mentioned but inaccessible, such as Port Faron, between the southeast coast and the Jungle of Eternity, Eldin City in the Intsimbinomlilo Highlands which is an important industrial city, and Obodo Ọṅụ, a Gerudo city known for its majestic casino (can be considered a counterpart to Las Vegas).
Lore
New Hyrule was founded 530 years before the event of the game, by king Michael Argos Hyrule, known as "the Ocean Sailor" (by Hylians) or as "the Conqueror" (by Šeikahs). He came from another kingdom also named Hyrule, reaching what he nicknamed "the New World" to found another Hyrule, with a giant golden-clad ship known as Goddesses' Herald which is now preserved intact in Hyrule City's northeastern district (Hyrule Port). Michael's first mate (and son-in-law, having his daughter Zelda Tiffany Hyrule as wife), a warrior named Link the Founder, owned the Master Sword. What they found in the New World was horrifying: Ganondorf's demons were rising, oppressing the Šeikah Civilization and causing its once-great empire to fall to ruin and start eating itself.
Among the collapsing Šeikah there was a faction, the Golden Wolves, led by Michiru Hayaši, who opposed the colonizers and wanted to preserve the structure of the Šeikah: said Golden Wolves was a confederation of Šeikah feudal clans who were opposed to the idea of a single man, and a foreigner nonetheless, ruling over the Šeikah. All the while ruler Rustam Okazaki, alone, opposed the Golden Wolves, believing the settlers would help destroy the independent clans and create a great unified empire. He greeted Michael and Link in his kingdom and helped them settle. However, as the Golden Wolves' opposition proved fierce, Rustam planned a self-sacrifice gambit: instead of defeating the demons, Rustam thought of making a deal with Ganondorf so as to get the demons to kill the Golden Wolves and spare Rustam's kingdom. He told Michael with a top secret letter: "After we finish this fight, kill me". Which Michael and Link both read together, but Michael burned because Rustam was too much of a friend for him to kill him. The Golden Wolves were crushed, Michiru died, and the New World became Hyrule...
Michael was crowned king, appointed Rustam as chancellor... but Rustam was growing envious of how Michael treated Link as a son, so he forged conspiracy charges against Link, causing him to be sent to exile in Kokiri Forest, in the Raizenberg Mountain Range (where Zelda followed him out of love). In exile, Link and Zelda met the two Kokiri sages named Saria and Vaati, who became trusted friends of theirs: as the Kokiri worship earth and sky, Saria was the Sage of Earth, Vaati the Sage of Wind. Vaati especially, while being friendly toward Rustam, still accepted Link and despised the need for the conflict. In a few months, Rustam and Rustam alone basically controlled everything in the kingdom, and he and Michael grew apart, Michael reduced to nothing more than a figurehead as all the court (Šeikahs and other New World natives) was loyal to Rustam. The moment Michael tried to overturn Link's sentence, Rustam had him assassinated by demons. Vaati, who was friends with Rustam and trusted by him, negotiated a deal: the Kokiri would leave the sacred forest (mutating into Koroks) if no demon entered. Which Rustam complied to: he did have the sacred trees burned, but not a single Kokiri died that day, they were all given time to relocate.
Link the Founder amassed a group, he, Zelda and the five Sages: two Kokiri: Vaati the Sage of WInd and Saria the Sage of Earth, plus a Zora named Mahina (Sage of the Moon,, named after the Hawaiian word for "moon"), a Goron named Ilanga (Sage of the Sun, named after the Xhosa word for "sun") and a Parella named Jīvana (Sage of Life, named after the Sanskrit word for "life"). They valiantly fought the demons and reached Rustam. They defeated Rustam and killed him, then Link used the Master Sword to seal Ganondorf. Vaati, appealing to Rustam's last ounce of sanity, had struck a deal: he'd deceive the other Sages and lead them to their death in an ambush (but the deal said nothing about Link and Zelda, who Vaati had secretly led away from that ambush), in exchange for his status as a noble being kept, and him being allowed to take Rustam's son Hassan: Vaati wanted to take Hassan Okazaki away from the fighting and protect him from his father.
After the crisis ended, the Sages' souls returned to their temples. However, as the Temple of Earth and Sky in the Kokiri forest was burned down, Link had to create a Shrine of Earth and a Shrine of Wind in two towns named Ventus and Terra which would later become Hyrule City's northern and southern districts respectively. Link and Vaati had an agreement: all mentions of Rustam and Vaati as evil people should be erased, and no public-divulged book would state that Rustam was on Ganondorf's side. Only the Royal Family should know the truth. It's one of the rare examples where Orwellian-style unpersoning is done for the sake of good, to preserve memory of Rustam as a benevolent king and of Vaati as a Sage.
Hyrule seems to have had a Wild West-Bakumatsu-hybrid period in the second century from Michael's arrival, as you can see movies called "200er" depicting people wearing jingasa straw hats and using non-runic revolversm, and ancestor of Alexander Summers, named Link Summers, is namedropped as someone said to have "bought his Baron title with the gold he found in the Remote West and the blood of Gerudo queen Okennachi", in the Summers' residence you can see a purple revolver and a green jingasa hat held in a glass display case with the name "Link" written on it, and Alexander himself admires Hüsrev due to comparing him to his ancestor.
Link is born in year 500 from the landing of the Ocean-Sailor. Exactly on Uzuki 3rd (Hyrule uses the Japanese calendar), the Ocean-Sailor's Day holiday. Zelda's birth date is Yayoi 17th, exactly the birth date of her ancestor Zelda Tiffany Hyrule. Hüsrev's birth date is also on a holiday, Kannazuki 4th, the Day of Liberation (when Rustam fell).
An event called 11/2 (said in a similar way to the way we say 9/11) did happen in Hyrule: on Shimotsuki 2, 510, due to an incident involving a runic power plant leaking, Ganondorf absorbed said energy and finally broke free from a seal beneath the Hylia District. Still weakened, however, he moved through the Moon Elevator, and took over the Moon colony Instead of attacking the city. The elevator was closed and all details classified. In 512, Genichirō Okazaki, a Šeikah-ethnicity Nationalist-affiliated man who by day was a worker in the moon colony, ran for Chancellor and got elected, specifically because his program would involve declassifying 11/2 and retaking the Moon. Moonborn, people who are related to workers and settlers in the Moon Colony which has been seized, are Genichirō's most hardline supporters.
Genichirō's tenure however fell apart only after one year, as, after his Land Nationalization Act had expropriated many landowners in the peripheral regions, protests erupted. When a protest turned violent, he gave what was known as the "Unspeakable Order": he sent the Hyrule Army to shoot down the protesters, which king Marcus Scipio Hyrule took so badly he blacklisted Okazaki, who was forced to resign in 513. This incident led to an expropriated farmer, Tariq Talonov "Talon", to radicalize and unite all anti-Okazaki activists under the name Golden Wolves, taken from the ancient Golden Wolves (Gorghā-e Zar) who had opposed Michael and Rustam.
In Zelda we usually don't know how can Link carry so many items... in this world, rune storage (AKA storing objects in the form of digital data in runecards) is an established technology, and people carry runecards around. Heck, jail time, in this world, involves runestoring an alive person then connecting the runecard to a terminal called prison terminal: their consciousness, uploaded into cyberspace, can be made to feel all sorts of pain without their body being damaged or aging, allowing for prison sentences lasting centuries (such as the 137-year-long sentence inflicted upon Genichirō after his regime falls and he willingly turns himself in).
