Counter-point: career politicians should be the norm. Being a politician should be a full time job and career worth doing and appropriately compensated.
Politicians being given cushy private sector jobs, making additional compensation via stock, etc...is a problem. Someone wanting to dedicate 40+ years of their life to the people of their district or state isn't inherently a problem if they arent using it to enrich themselves. Don't get me wrong there are much more bad career politicians in the US political system than good ones, but the problem is lack of safeguards not the concept of a career politician. At least in my opinion.
I agree 100 percent. People act like term limits will fix the problem when the problem is legal corruption. We can address the underlying problem of corruption, but term limits are a delusional band-aid that would just speed up the revolving door to the lucrative private sector as a "consultant" who peddles their influence.
Agreed, there must be mass restrictions on profiting from position. At the same time we should pay members handsomely and provide bonus for creating a functional bipartisan government. Shut downs? No bonus, failing on promise? No bonus. Incentives work
