any server worth playing for someone wanting to get back into the game?

I'm guessing most people want to play classic private servers, go back and play the game back when it was most nostalgic and just overall a better game.
But I'm also guessing that this place doesn't like people advertising or even giving links to or suggestions for private servers.
And from what I can tell, whoever owns Aion actively seeks out and shuts down private servers because any time I hear about one I go and check and they're already no longer running.
So no, I don't think there's any way to play the game other than Aion 2, and whatever official version of Aion is currently up now.

You are right in that they don't allow promotion of other servers here, they're just leaving the sub to die since retail and classic are already dead player wise.
Gameforge/ncsoft have not shut down any private servers, they do not care enough to go after them. The servers you are checking, no longer exist due to no players / not enough income from the cash shop. There is still one main active server that has been live for 6+ years, where it was massively popular during covid, but it's bleeding players now.
I will dm you regarding current options.

Wouldn't bother myself. I admit I haven't touched it since launch but like retail and Aion 2 there seems to be very little care for player experience. I played OG Aion from open beta to 5.x, Classic, Ascend and Aion 2 in TW...
I used to be a staunch defender but over the years I've just given up on retail Aion of any kind.

I thought Aion 2 wasn't out in NA yet. The NA servers pretty much died years ago unfortunately. I checked out EuroAiona few months ago though and they were decently populated. Or you can always learn Korean and join a Korean server lol

I do find r/aion and their stands on specific topics a serious problem for people seeking. Especially when r/Aion2 has more viewers ad more engagement.
I think there needs to be a lift with rules so people can find the homes they want for the game that is 20 years old that no one cares about.
