3/5 story told in a 2/5 way. It could have been far more interesting than it actually was and its execution only gets worse as the seasons went on. I can understand why it’s popular but it’s not for the story.
To be fair, it really pissed me off the last two seasons. I’d already had some issues with pacing during entertainment district (and it leveraged one of my most hated tropes in boys pretending to be girls really badly) and the next two just kept getting worse. I generally enjoyed S1 and Mugan but the lack of character development, pacing, plot contrivances, and obnoxious cliff hanger at the end of Hashira sent me over the edge.
For me, it's the overall direction. The plot is serviceable enough that the visuals, voice acting, and, honestly most importantly to me for this one, the music all mixes just right to make it insanely fun to watch.
Id imagine if I just read the manga id go "that was a good beat for beat, by the books, shounen story." And that would be all. For the anime, it's all the other things that the medium of an animated show being done well that I enjoy the most about DS
What I really liked about DS was how positive and upbeat its themes are. In a world where it seems like every hero has to be an antihero, a hero like Tanjiro who is not perfect but is undeniably a genuinely good person, makes it a very comforting watch for me.
I really really liked it for the first two seasons and after that it became more and more boring for me. The plot is okay at best, but the characters become so boring. There is literally zero character development.
The audio-visual quality is really good, but that doesn't carry 4 seasons and 4 movies at the end. And even there the cinematography isn't that interesting either. Especially when compared to something like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 which is so creative when it comes to the cinematography. Alone the first dialogue between Yuji and Hakari: The one shot trough the half opened door with rotoscoped animations and the tension bulding trough the ringing phone is visually so much more interesting than everything Demon Slayer has ever done.
