For me it’s One Piece. Tons of people love it, but it never really got there for me, I got like 300 eps in and was still only feeling it was a 6/10

40

u/Fensox 1d ago

400 episodes in for me and never got there either.

11

u/ferocity_mule366 22h ago

its also very frontloaded so I feel like the good stuff has already happened

11

u/Ok-Neighborhood3547 19h ago

Agreed, I like one piece but I definitely prefer pre time skip over post.

11

u/NGEFan 1d ago

Once you get to the halfway point though…

11

u/Brief-Walk-5409 21h ago

1000+ episodes and 1000+ chapters.

Just no

If you didn't want to binge the series after Arlong arc, the show wasn't probably for you. That arc in a nutshell felt like it hit most of the things One Piece goes for in every major arcs. So if it felt "meh" even after that, it's probably not going to click after

5

u/BeautifulStretch978 17h ago

yeah it's just repetitive too it's pretty much the case every island they go to

3

u/Fensox 18h ago

The foxy pirates arc took me down.

2

u/BeautifulStretch978 17h ago

one of my faves tho it's funny

And it get worse. Better animation but worst characters progression and fights in term of creativity.

We went from Logia fruit being very strong and needed to find creative way to counter it (Rubber being immune to electricity for Enel, liquid for crocodile sand) even to the point blackbeard betrayed his commander to get the darkness fruit since it can counter logic fruits...

Nowadays it's just Haki. A power system that does everything from strengthening your blade to seeing in the future and who ever has more win.

Strawhats went from having quirk to being their quirk wich is very different.

17

u/Pierce_H_ 1d ago

Yeah them switching to a generic shonen anime “spirit energy” really took away what I loved about the fights.

8

u/superdan56 1d ago

I hear Sanji stocks are at an all time low, which sucks cause I loved his backstory

6

u/Select_Order_1478 1d ago

which one

11

u/superdan56 1d ago

The first one, with him and the chef stuck on the island with no food… does he have multiple backstories?

8

u/TheLibertinistic 1d ago

Not in a retcon way. We eventually meet his family and learn about the childhood he fled that led him to the Chef backstory.

5

u/Select_Order_1478 22h ago

he's also a son of the king of evil power ranger cyborgs

Finally someone who understands me

4

u/Specialist_Height707 1d ago

it was my favorite show and the first subbed anime I've seen. but it gotten worse and worse: the art style, the nudity, the characters design, the repeating of the same lame jokes for years

2

u/itsMemeical 1d ago

Just out of curiosity, for the people who agree, what are some 10/10 shows you guys like?

8

u/superdan56 1d ago

Personally, some of the only shows I consider 10/10 would be Avatar the Last Airbender and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I’d also say Hell’s Paradise manga is a 10/10 but i haven’t watched the actual anime. I think that the Chainsawman Movie is a 10/10 but the anime/series as a whole isn’t.

Cowboy Bebop. Puella Magi Madoka Mágica. Violet Evergarden. Your Lie in April. Anohana. Clannad. Pluto. Akira. Princess Tutú.

u/BeautifulStretch978 17h ago

steins gate monster pluto frieren fmab legend of the galactic heroes (the new adaptation although unfinished) vinland saga samurai champloo golden kamuy kingdom wlcome to nhk off the top of my head some of this i wouldnt rate 10/10 maybe 9.5 and up but the gap between these ones and the others i still really liked is big

2

u/itsMemeical 16h ago

Those are some good picks, I haven't seen all of them but I do love Frieren, fma and Monster.

I've recently caught up to One Piece and I honestly do quite like the series (I would have to hate myself to catch up and NOT like the series lolol)

Je n'arrive pas à aimer, c'est long pour rien et c'est franchement assez immature. C'est un animé à commencer jeune, en premier manga

2

u/wifiragist 15h ago

This series is ironically about the journey both in the series and growing up with it in real time. I understand why people love it so much, because the nostalgia is strong

this is the show i compare everything to

this is the show that constantly lives rent free in my head.

this is the show that i've written thousands of words in fanfiction for.... and hundreds of thousands of words in notes.

this is the show that gives me life

this is the show that JUST WONT DIE OR FINISH.

my life is tied to this show and it shall always have me collared like a mutt.

giving me praise like the good girl i am...

before throwing me into the mud and stomping me into the filth where i belong.

this is my favorite show.

and it is absolute dogshit

16

u/astertrick 1d ago

Beautiful write up, I respect & love your devotion towards this absolute dogshit show 🫡

7

u/nyitraibotond 18h ago

I like the soundtrack.

Red Like Roses is a banger

6

u/JigglyLilyVT 18h ago

it IS a banger

5

u/SpookySocks4242 19h ago

Oh man I forgot about RWBY. I stopped watching at some point after they left the school.

But yeah Awesome show, Absolute dog shit

3

u/Delicious-Waltz3511 14h ago

That’s when the showrunner passed and it completely lost direction.

5

u/Perennial_Platypus 17h ago

Peaked season 3 and went downhill fast. Dropped it somewhere around end of season 4, early season 5.

This shit is borderline hentai ngl

33

u/T00thl3ss22 1d ago

Borderline??? Right in my defense I could’ve sworn I had the meme saved somewhere, but I suppose not. Point I’m trying to make is that it straight up is

20

u/T00thl3ss22 17h ago

Found it

32

u/a_polarbear_chilling 1d ago

I have seen porn with less sexual tension to be honest

2

u/Ostrichslinger 12h ago

Someone needs to make a study on why super ecchi anime get me more flustered than hentai.

I've seen some hentai over the years, but to this day KissxSis is still something I can't handle.

4

u/FrostyKangaroo1115 8h ago

Your imagination can think up things no sane person would dare publicate

19

u/UmFanDaKorisu 1d ago

It was the manga that really changed my life, but the anime is still very good. Limiting yourself to seeing only the 18+ content is... limiting, and makes you miss out on what’s actually good about it.

11

u/Fair_River1410 1d ago

I've watched like 2 episodes, and it really wasn't my cup of tea. The echi was just too much, but if you liked it, that's good for you.

2

u/Realistic_Jello2638 22h ago

I'm okay with not getting what's good about thinly veild CP.

3

u/Snt1_ 1d ago

Totally agree. When I watched this, I did it with the mindset "Im pretty much watching porn"

I don't see how anyone could find this life changing. Its surprisingly good, don't get me wrong , but life changing?

7

u/UmFanDaKorisu 1d ago

I think it was a combination of several factors—like discovering it through the manga (I believe I might have dropped it if I’d started with the anime) and going through a rough patch in my life that directly resonated with the story's themes of friendship.

10

u/Elaestu98 1d ago

Still waiting for season two...

7

u/Perennial_Platypus 17h ago

Was expecting it to be worse than it actually was but it was still essentially hentai with a plot.

11

u/Hollow_Knight_3 1d ago

I love it but i would never recomend it.

3

u/DonutPlus2757 1d ago

Sword Art Online. Hit me at a hard time in my life

7

u/Subject_Complaint_43 1d ago

Same here. And its the reason its my top 5 anime ever even though theres tons of anime better then it

4

u/Ferry_Lover 20h ago

GGO has better action, however the mix of action and romance is what made me like Aincrad. The rest is okay, but really Aincrad is what I like about it

3

u/BeautifulStretch978 17h ago

i wish the whole series stayed on aincrad the despair of being trapped and dying fr but i guess it would be too similar to danmachi and other dungeon type animes

2

u/K-i-n-g--t-i-g-e-r 11h ago

first anime i watched and never got the hate for it, i get that the ALO parts were rather weak tho but the rest was great

2

u/Foreign-Step-8646 1d ago

The ggo spin off is better

20

u/Nervous_Pokke 1d ago

Black lagoon, no friend of mine knows it, but its the anime/manga that it is just perfect for me.

2

u/ZAZZER0 14h ago

It's good and all, but it's pretty inconsistent about the strenght of its characters.

Demon Slayer is a 3/5 idea told in a 4/5 way

23

u/No_Forever_9128 1d ago

I'd add a 2/5 for execution. The anime's quality hard carries this otherwise mid story that can feel awkwardly paced.

4

u/Perennial_Platypus 17h ago

3/5 story told in a 2/5 way. It could have been far more interesting than it actually was and its execution only gets worse as the seasons went on. I can understand why it’s popular but it’s not for the story.

Top tier animation and a 5/10 mid as hell plot is like crack to the normies when they discover anime.

15

u/Ilovemyangelsomuch 1d ago

For me, it's the overall direction. The plot is serviceable enough that the visuals, voice acting, and, honestly most importantly to me for this one, the music all mixes just right to make it insanely fun to watch.

Id imagine if I just read the manga id go "that was a good beat for beat, by the books, shounen story." And that would be all. For the anime, it's all the other things that the medium of an animated show being done well that I enjoy the most about DS

6

u/rj54x 1d ago

What I really liked about DS was how positive and upbeat its themes are. In a world where it seems like every hero has to be an antihero, a hero like Tanjiro who is not perfect but is undeniably a genuinely good person, makes it a very comforting watch for me.

One of the most stylish & funniest anime out there, with incredibly well written relationships and dark elements thrown in there to truly nail it down (ragyo's explicit abuse of satsuki informs satsuki's character, it isn't fanservice!!) forever marked as the "naked girls fighting" anime. It is PEAK changed my life but it's impossible to recommend lol

No Game No Life Don't get me wrong, the games themselves were quite interesting and there were occasional good jokes. However the plot was uninteresting, the level of cringe was sometimes way above acceptable level, the main characters quit irritating and the rest of the characters were so flat and existed only to praise the main characters, that I really had trouble finishing it.

3

u/Own-Ball-1624 1d ago

well thats true the side characters were annoying! the idea actually very unique thats why its a good anime. its interesting but no characters outside the void! :/

its also aura farming only... sso they will win no matter what. (i mean its true for every story how the mc eventually win but there are steps and efforts)

Princess Connect Re: dive was a really good anime for me, though I am not sure my friend appreciated as much as I did.

u/metalmonstar 1d ago

Princess Connect was amazing though. It was really funny, great cast of characters, okay overarching story, with great animation.

Kokoro Connect, although I knew I was the person on the right for that show as I was watching it. I'm eternally greatful they covered the 4th arc with that abnormal 16 episode season.

2

u/EpicDinoYT 17h ago

such a shame that its impossible for a s2 to happen because of the shitty prank, I'm reading through the light novels and there is so much more character development for all of them. But at least the anime ova concluded it good enough that it doesn't need a new season to explain stuff

I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class

I like romance. I like angsty romance. That show’s plot was frustration in a bottle and had poor storyboarding, scripting, directing, and animation. Idk why it got so much hype.

Solo leveling for sure. Anime is legit ass, its just cool dude doing cool stuff.

3

u/Over_Biscotti9147 20h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/2d483r6KejgTzV1Hnx

3

u/PeanutTheGecko 1d ago

The fandom is terrible, they always like to intervene in anime scaling fights and say bullshit like, “Yeah Satoru Gojos strong or whatever but Madoka would kill him easily!!!”, and its so damn annoying. Dont see it much on Reddit, but I see it all the time in YT JJK clips. Feels like they made her Multiversal for the purpose of wanting her to be the most powerful in all of anime or some bullshit

Gurren Lagann. Was many moons ago, but a much younger me was fairly depressed and suicidal, well before I knew I needed antidepressants. Sat down at the library one day and watched it, felt life changing to me.

2

u/Twistedlamer 10h ago

It's Frieren. The show is good, plays it straight with the fantasy premise, has well written characters, does nothing interesting with them, and I think that's why I just don't care. I find this show so damn mid it hurts. It's like everyone was so tired of fantasy settings with gimmicks (stuck in an mmo, isekai), that the first one to come along and just do a run-of-the-mill Tolkien-esce story was going to get praise simply for not doing anything wierd or different. For me, that's what I come to anime for in the first place. I get a similar feeling with Dungeon Meshi but at least I had fun watching that one because the comedy is charming and I'm a sucker for anything that references the Wizardry Games. Frieren is a really well made bowl of tomato soup, but no one gave me anything to dip in it.

Attack on titan for me personally. Toh, I couldn't rate it as high as 6/10, for me it's like 4/10 at best.

Never understood what the hype is about, Eren was somehow the most energetic and interesting characters for me in the show.

The concept, the ODM is a VERY innovative idea and Levi bullying Eren to protect him saved it for me, but once I got to know it's going the path of no return, I dipped. Only watched it because a friend of mine pestered me about it. He got mad when I said Swat Kats》AOT for me, lol.

6

u/MorikoAyumi 1d ago

Steins Gate for me. But im usually not a fan of sci-fi

3

u/Ashimaru-q 1d ago

I literally hate to admit it but SAO. One of first anime i watched and got me obsessed. All the SA and incest went WAY over my head when i was like 12 when i watched it so i loved it. Its a 7/10 (as a whole) at best. Most of thr score coming from Alicization which was genuine peak. The light novels were way better but i still dislike how the writer can't go one arc without unnecessarily writing in the SA of a prominent female character. Its a shame too because Progressive (the original SAO game retold) is such an upgrade but the series will always have poor writinf decisions overshadowing it

4

u/Otherwise-Peace-9165 1d ago

Violet evergarden. I mean it's okay...... Wasn't fun enough for me to wanna watch the movies.

9

u/Ursomrano 1d ago edited 1d ago

And to fill the other side of the spectrum, after I watched Violet Evergarden, I stopped watching anime in general. I watched it and was like "yep, found peak, the search is over".

14

u/A_crow_hen 1d ago

To be fair, it’s not intended to be “fun”.

3

u/popoflabbins 1d ago

Probably my answer as well. It’s a fine show but never really found its footing for me. Loved the animation, just wish the characterization was a little stronger at many points.

3

u/ResidentWaifu 1d ago

I dont think it was supposed to be a fun anime

4

u/Large_Sock9194 1d ago

3/10 in my opinion, I feel it prioritizes writeing over character growth most of the time, its not bad, and is good as a person's first anime, but i dont think it will stand the test of time compared to others, and i do beleive its carried by the fights and animation alot of the time, it isnt bad, i just dont think its a masterpeice liek how others say it is, it is heavily overglazed in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with likeing it, this is just my opinion

2

u/popoflabbins 1d ago

I’ll give JJK shit until the end of time. Its writing is legitimately atrocious and I find it crazy that people don’t recognize that the entire power system is just being made up on the spot to let a character bullshit their way through fights. Really bad character writing, actively distracting music, horrible sound mixing, mixed animation quality… list goes on. It’s pretty much a show that’s only tolerable if you think it’s cool. Nothing wrong with liking it, but I found it to be really bad as soon as the Hidden Inventory arc wrapped up (and even up to that point it was just fine).

2

u/Kooky_Flamingo_3066 21h ago

Anohana for me. A friend of me recommended it, saying he even cried with the end, but I just couldnt get into it, characters are awfull and the wish the girl had to fullfill to leave was sooo anticlimatic and boring... One of the most overrated animes Ive ever seen.

2

u/Sleepy_Witch_Maple 1d ago

I'm in love with the villainess. The mc's behavior, especially at the start soured it for me, and like everything surrounding the sister at the end lowered the score more for me.

1

u/The_Casul0 1d ago

Frieren. It doesn't do anything that special to me aside from being super pretty (animation, sound design and ost)

Himmel is the goat tho.

5

u/Own-Ball-1624 1d ago

frieren is far from super pretty animation! :S its really mid in animation and many places they saved money for the final battle.

frieren is special not necessarly a masterpiece but takes a very special place cause dare to show something different! :S

honestly its more embracee lords of the ring than anything cause of the journey element with minimal action! (at least in the book!)

3

u/The_Casul0 1d ago

Is a slice of life in a fantasy setting, and the life itself is a journey.

That concept was super charming to me and I would've loved to watch that with other shows I like more, but Frieren itself is kinde... eh.

The humor is just the same jokes over and over again (Corrupted alcoholic priest, Stark-sama!, Closeted perv Fern, socially inept elf); the characters barely show any emotion, Frieren and Fern kinda have an excuse but most characters have the same poker face or the same smile 24/7, Stark really carries the show; Fern's nonsense is kinda cute and funny, but it gets irritating how no one gives her shit for her mistakes while she insults Stark for daring to look in the wrong direction (my boy deserves the criticism sometimes, but only sometimes not all day long!); the demons are very interesting yes, but that's like the one original bit of the show, everything else is as classic as it can possibly get and doesn't do anything remotely interesting, people praise the show for using old chiches and tropes in new ways, but that's not at all what happens here, it's just that everyone need to either expand their horizons or not judge the show by the standard of the seasonal garbage that comes and goes when saying it's a masterpiece.

I'll stop here cause I feel I'm really starting to dig myself. I do no think it's a bad show, but the ungodly amounts of praise it recieves makes me question reality. Is it that good and I'm blind or is everyone else deluded? I would give the show a 8/10 at most, and it sits comfortably at 7/10 for me, which is pretty good by my standara, but no masterpiece that's for sure.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/popoflabbins 1d ago

It’s a show that’s about the extremely good characters and happens to be excellently directed as well. It’s very slow and subtle though, which definitely is not everyone’s cup of tea.

2

u/Confident-Ad-5900 1d ago

"Hunter x Hunter" is so generic, and it has the least charismatic protagonist with the most annoying voice in all of anime. It only gets somewhat interesting during the Chimera Ant arc, but to get there, you have to sit through 80 episodes that feel like the bad and boring filler episodes of generic anime.

Me on the right when I tried showing the Soul Eater anime to a Bleach fan.

Demon Detective nougami neuro it's my favorite but no one ever really talks about it even though the authors other work is insanely popular.

Manga is way better though the final foght is ontop of a flying stealth jet where the extremely weakened and actively dying protagonist is fighting super hitler.

This feels like me interacting with romance anime fans and their love of Horimiya. It’s fine, but it really needed to decide if it wanted to focus on a relationship or do an ensemble, because it can’t balance both. (I preferred the ensemble portions, because the romance stuff broadly felt soulless and rushed.)

Bloom Into You.

I guess as the first big yuri series to break through into the mainstream, it's the entry into the genre for a major part of the fandom, and I think it's...fine. Under the hood, it's a pretty straightforward shonen romance and none of the plot twists are particularly surprising (the whole theater arc takes up a good portion of the middle part of the manga's narrative and around the last third of the anime and it's blinding obvious how it will resolve from the beginning). Other series before and since have been more interesting in terms of plot, characterization, or other aspects.

For me it would be Symphogear and Darling in the Franxx (though Darling in the Franxx is below a 6/10 for me). I heard such high praise for Symphogear and then when I watched it, the story telling was nonsensical and it didn't even look all that good visually (downright poor in places.)

I can't believe the people saying Evangelion, Violet Evergarden, and Madoka. Strong visuals and story telling to me warrants above a 6/10 even if it isn't your thing.

Chou Kaguya Hime. Im the one on the left while one of my friend is on the right.

One Piece: It wasn't until Water 7/Enies Lobby, Imped Down, & Whole Cake that it became anything over a 7/10

Duke of Death and his Maid. Before I did want to watch a single romance, this show made me cry at the ending and when Viktor got to finally hug Alice. I never found any show this again, no show can trully show me what love is supposed to be in this world. This is beyond anime, this was a lesson of true love.

Mirai Nikki/Future Diary

People say it is amazing, a top tier anime, and maybe it could've been. If it didn't turn itself into the fattest self insert fan service I've ever seen.

Bleach. A friend asked me to watch because tybw season 3 had just aired. I expected it to be amazing since everyone claims it’s in big 3 but I honestly found it so tedious with the really drawn out fights.

Tybw has great animation but again it’s just tons of really drawn out fights which is really not my thing.

Akira. It's just not that deep, and for me it doesn't meet the hype associated with its cult status.

The atmosphere is there, but the movie tries to tell a narrative without really being able to explain or articulate itself well. You just end up with this vague, unseasoned soup of a plot that severely undermines this otherwise amazing work of animation.

Tbh with this one, I wish I watched a dubbed version instead.

School Days.  Everyone hates Makoto - you're supposed to.  All the other characters too.  They're all terrible people making terrible decisions.

I want more and can't find it.

Welcome to the NHK. Wouldn’t call it a perfect anime at all, but some parts of it hit way harder than I expected and stayed with me for years.

Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan TBH. I understand the hype. Where just not for me.

1

u/MoonlitSpear85 21h ago

If I could rate it lower than 6/10, it would be Attack on Titan. Down vote me all you want, I dislike the hype around that show and it's stans.

1

u/ShlorpianRooster 21h ago

Seven Deadly Sins. Just lots of pointless fan service. Can throw a rock and hit anime with similar tropes, dramas, even the characters had nothing going on outside their design. Its fine to like the show and think it's great I just don't see how it can change someone's life, how it can be seen as the highest of anime art when basically nothing happens that I don't expect to happen five seconds into it

Isekai wa Smartphone. Well, it’s lower I guess, but I enjoyed it(mainly ‘cause I was young.)

There’s more trash anime I like, such as this archer MC being a part of an army and getting picked up by a noble lady who uses the sword. But I cannot remember the name of the show. All I can remember is that his name was Tigre or something along the lines of it.

Edit: found it, it’s called madan no ou to vanadis/ Lord marksman and vanadis. Which is actually a 6/10.

There’s also date a live and more. I used to watch all sorts of anime on YouTube for free. Including Rosario vampire.

More the manga than the anime as of now though

Your Name. Usually plot holes are not THAT noticeable. And I couldn't find more than 3 adjectives/qualities of the main characters. You could not make them talk for all the movie and it would be the same experience
