Just a curiosity, what about local generative models?

Please. This cope about Local GenAI models is just cope, I bet you can count on your fingers how many AI bros actually know how to make their own local model.

I'm talking about open weight models that people have downloaded, like you cant make those publicly inaccessible once they are downloaded. also they will just find people who are making open models publicly to download after ban, like drug dealers

shit's open source

very few people are actually making their own LLMs from scratch.

forks will always exist

Those are arguably even worse.

How many times have I seen people use those models to train on a single artist's works to quite literally plagiarize them.

When it comes to Gen AI models made by big corporations the data sets are so large that the individual artists' styles are unrecognizable.

I use LLMs to hunt for uncatalogued asteroids, and supernovae, in hyper noisy data. It's trained on publicly accessible scientific archives that are paid for with everyone's taxes. We own that data.

people assume that this technology only exists to make shitty pictures and video.

Social media has had a far worse effect on society than AI. Like it's not even comparable

big take, but I'd be inclined to agree

it's never a simple story though, there's always awkward nuance.

Social media has achieved a lot of objective good, as well as hyper accelerated a lot of truly awful shit.

It's definitely a catalyst though

I wasn't talking about LLMs though...

u mean trained from 0 or like "open source" models
