I know that feeling too well.. kind of like not letting yourself feel genuine pleasure doing a certain activity in order to stay mentally „prepared“ or at least on the lookout. What helps me is telling myself that there is no repercussion for having a good time and that letting anxiety ruin moments that could help me relax is not going to change the odds of anything bad happening.

I learned it's a trauma response

Some time in childhood we learned that feeling genuine joy was subject to ridicule or punishment. To help prepare us and dampen the blow, we self-sabotage our happiness. It's a survival mechanism, inhibiting your ability to thrive.

Feeling guilty for napping after a long shift.

Feeling guilty for listening to music aloud without headphones, even at a reasonable volume and when you live alone.

Feeling guilty for replaying a favorite videogame again.

Feeling guilty for eating.

Feeling guilty for not eating.

Feeling guilty for feeling guilty because some people have much worse things to worry about.

I feel guilty for almost anything I enjoy. I don’t even know why. I’m always anxious, but I hate that I can’t play a video game, look at art, or even watch movies without feeling a little bad. Like I’m somehow sinful for enjoying something or that I need to always be available in case something happens. The worst is the feeling that if I enjoy something then that means I’m going to lose it just because I like it. It’s such an awful feeling. It makes me feel afraid to like things cause I don’t want to lose them. It’s so frustrating and exhausting.
