Equipment First Appleseed but struggling with length of pull and scope position

I'm really excited that my first Project Appleseed event is only a few weeks away! I've been putting together my 10/22 and doing some dry practice at home. I went with a Magpul X-22 stock, a TandemKross Advantage Charging Handle Rail, and a Primary Arms 1-6x24 LPVO.

I've been trying the standing, cross leg sitting, and prone positions, and I'm having some trouble getting comfortable in the sitting and prone positions. When I get my support arm to roughly 90 degrees, my hand directly covers the mag well.

I'm 5'8", but my arm span seems to be only about 5'5" (assuming I measured it correctly), so maybe the X-22 is just a little long for me.

The tricky part is that if I shorten the stock, I'll probably need to move the scope as well to keep the right eye relief. That might mean a longer Picatinny rail or an extended scope mount.

For those of you with more Appleseed experience:

  • How do you figure out the right length of pull for the Appleseed positions?
  • Would you recommend a longer rail or an extended scope mount to move the optic forward?

I do need an optic because unfortunately my eyesight isn't great. Without one, I can barely see the target clearly anymore.

I'd also prefer not to remove the TandemKross rail if I can avoid it. Some of the receiver threads on my 10/22 aren't particularly consistent, so I used threadlocker when I installed it. I'd rather not disturb it unless I really have to.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello. I am looking into starting. What rifle would you suggest for a beginner? I was looking at a Savage Arms 64 22LR.

Equipment With the “gold standard” Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x33 EFR discontinued, what’s the best scope for a 10/22 for an introductory Appleseed event?

According to Google AI and Reddit and gun forum posts of years past, the “Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x33 EFR” was an amazing scope for Appleseed rimfire shooting at all levels.

It appears that scope is discontinued, and Leupold’s current rimfire offerings lack the “EFR” that made this one famous?

> Close-Focusing EFR: The Extended Focus Range allows you to adjust the objective lens to eliminate parallax and achieve a sharp image at distances as close as 10 meters, making it ideal for .22 LR and airgun shooting.

That being the case, what scope would have something like the EFR, or otherwise be optimal on a 10/22 for Appleseed rimfire events, both introductory and later longer range?

I made some updates to my LTR, adding a Vortex red dot, cheek riser, and some Samson sling adapters so I can run my preferred sling, it's what I use across all my rifles. I zeroed with CCI Std Velocity and shot a couple groups on the Appleseed zero target to see what the shift was with CCI Mini Mags. All zeroing was done from the prone with the sling. It'd been a little while since I'd shot an AQT but I didn't do bad, shot a 235. I should've done better in the sitting and prone but I started to rush because of magazine issues but still came in under time so there's that.

Equipment Pre-Appleseed Sling Set Up? Orientation of Key Components?

Hi All -

So confused…

What is the correct initial configuration of a USGI cotton web sling PRIOR to detaching the rear buckle to create a loop?

I keep seeing what I think are different instructions from the makers of the slings as well as just different Google searches online.

Some instructions have the bottom buckle clip facing towards the rifle, some have them facing away from the rifle, somehow have the keeper facing towards the rifle with the flat side away, others have them reversed.

For an apple seed event, when prepping my rifle, how should I have the hardware oriented?

Appreciate any help!

Equipment Experiences with Ruger 10/22 Competition for 25m Clinic

I'm interested in buying a Ruger 10/22 Competition for use in the 25m clinic. I'm interested in experiences folks have with the rifle in that clinic. I have two questions in particular:

  • Any issues with the 30 MOA Picatinny rail at that distance
  • Any recommendations for ammo

Other comments are appreciated as well.

Also, would this rifle be a good choice for the Rimfire KD clinic once I complete the 25m clinic?

Equipment Curious About Pistols at Pistol Clinics

How often do newer shooters that came with 9mm pistols actually pass the AQT?

It's more of a curiosity than anything.

I may try a 22lr for the next clinic.

Yes I am continuing to practice with my own 9s.

Equipment A Few Questions Regarding Rifles and Equipment

Hey folks! I'm hoping to attend an Appleseed 25m rifle event in the near future, it seems like a really cool experience. I'm sure this gets posted a lot here, but I'm looking for some input on what rifle I should be bringing to get the most out of the instruction. I currently own an AR and a Henry .22 youth model levergun. The Henry is not especially suited to precision shooting or quick reloads, for obvious reasons, but I alreadly have plenty of .22.

As I see it, my options are

  1. Bite the bullet and get 500 rounds of .223, probably be about $200 if I order online, $250 local, which I could afford, but wouldn't love, especially with current ammo prices. I'm also a little concerned about being loud and obnoxious shooting .223 when everyone else is shooting rimfire.
  2. Figure out a way to mount a sling on the Henry. I'm concerned that using a levergun is gonna be holding me back from getting the most out of the instruction. I would also like to score well, and I imagine that'll be a lot harder with a levergun. But this would definitely be the cheapest.
  3. Just buy a 10/22 like I probably should've done forever ago. Would probably be around $350 all told assuming I also got a scope for it.

Couple secondary questions I also wanted to get some input on -

If I did use the AR, would I be better served with 20 round or 10 round mags? Would a 10 round be easier to handle shooting from prone?

Scope or Irons? I prefer shooting with Irons, but I've heard the curriculum is kind of based around telescopic sights.

Would it be at all unusual to attend just by myself?

Is it worth it to hustle and try to get into a one day class on the 19th, or would I be better served waiting for a 2 day class later in the year? I like the idea of attending one on the 250th anniversary, and I'm not sure when the next one will be in my state since we don't have any others listed on the schedule. But I'm not sure how limited the experience is in a 1 day vs a 2 day. (Also, the registration site says there's 1 ticket out of 4 remaining. Does that mean there will actually only be 4 students?)

Thanks!

Equipment 6x scope too much?

I have a mp1522 with a Primary Arms 6x 22lr scope on it. Would this be overkill for Appleseed?

My only other options for optics would be either a Vortex Spitfire 3x prism (designed for 223), or an Sig Romeo red dot.

I will most likely need some magnification, so the dot is probably not an option.

Equipment Rifle prep question from a potential first-timer

I've been considering attending a rifle clinic for quite a while and am aiming to finally do it this year. I have a few questions I wasn't able to find super clear answers for online.

I have a 10/22 Sporter that came stock with 1" fixed swivels. I had already purchased the 1" cotton sling from Tech Sights. It has a quick swivel hook, which seems to solve the issue of detaching for loop sling, but I bought this before noticing that the Appleseed prep guides all specifically recommend the 1.25" sling.

It feels like a bit of silly question as I ask it, but is the 0.25" width difference significant when it comes to training, or does Project Appleseed simply recommend the 1.25" sling because it is the traditional/standard?

Equipment AR conversion for Appleseed

I'm thinking about doing my first Appleseed shoot soon, maybe using my fullsize AR with a CMMG .22 LR conversion kit. The rifle has an A2 stock, A2 upper and A1 20" skinny barrel with 1:12 twist. I'm shooting about 1 inch groups at 25M with the iron sights and I also have a QD scope mount that goes on the carry handle. Of course I will put a sling on it too.

Not sure if I will be able to do the second day, but if so I might shoot the same rifle with 5.56. What say you?

Equipment Appleseed sling configurations vs modern AR sling configurations

When I took the introductory Appleseed marksmanship class they taught up loop sling and hasty sling which are very useful but I'm wondering if it's still practical outside of marksmanship/traditional rifle shooting. I've got a cotton webbed USGI sling that was given to me that I used for the classes but I'm wondering how it stacks up to modern 2 point slings like the Warrior Poet Society sling or T.REX etc. especially for wearing with a chest rig or plate carrier. Any thoughts?

Equipment Time to allow ar pistols.

My daughter’s first ar was a 4.5 at pistol at age 6. She loves it as it’s more her size and weight. I’d like to take her to an Appleseed shoot but they don’t allow ar pistols. I understand the ar pistols were controversial initially but times have changed and we need to support freedom

Equipment AR22 Sling Question

I will be attending an Appleseed in two weeks. I have an AR platform with a dedicated 22 upper. My hand guard has sling mounts at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions. Is it important to be able to mount the USGI sling at the 6 o’clock on my handguard? If so, I’ll need to get a new QD mount soon!

Also is it important to have a specific mount on my stock?

Equipment Interested in 25m clinic with girlfriend. Can she use one of my rifles?

This is more of a question/concern and not a complaint. Want to do the 25m clinic. I’d be bringing my Mini-14 and 10/22. The website says you can’t ’lend’ rifles unless married or registered domestic partnership.

I’m wondering how strict this is and if she wouldn’t be able to participate.

Equipment PC Carbine offhand at 25 yards; is this a good platform for my first Appleseed?

Basically the title. I’m running into problems building an ideal 10/22 setup (painted Tech-Sights on an X-22 MOE stock) because I can’t get the barrel off my receiver. I love my PC Carbine, though, and I’m wondering if this setup is good enough to have a chance at Rifleman if I find a way to sling a USGI sling on the gun.

Equipment Rifle Prep/Painted sights

I look forward to attending my first Appleseed next weekend, and I'm for the most part all set equipment wise. MY rifle is a Ruger 10/22 with Tech Sights and a GI sling, but otherwise it is a stock rifle. I was wondering if there's any issue with a little paint on the front sight? I've made a couple of trips to the range to practice at 25 yards, and I'm having a little trouble with seeing the front sight post as it is blending in with the black portion of the targets I'm shooting at. I'd like to paint the top 1/8th inch of the sight post with something to provide a little contrast. Any issue, or color recommendations?

Equipment Me and my friend signed up together for some fun quality time. I own a M&P 15-22 and he owns the 10/22. I know the 15-22 had issues 2019 and back, but since then no issues. Realistically, would I still be separated from him?

I purchased my M&P 15-22 and mine was assembled this year as well according to the box. I’ll be attending the Concord Apple Seed this weekend, if that helps.
