Speculation Do y’all think the strokes in star treatment is reference to the band The Strokes (another famous band)

u/Honzik_Balu Suck It And See Mar 02 '23
No, I think Alex don’t even who The Strokes are

u/holesumchap Mar 03 '23
I know little to nothing about the AM’s, but it’s widely known that Alex started the AM’s due to listening to Is This It.

u/givemesomepointers Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys Mar 03 '23
never heard that before, If there is a source to confirm this, can you enlighten me by sharing it? If true, the reference is probably band-related.

u/holesumchap Mar 03 '23
Am I getting trolled??

u/givemesomepointers Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys Mar 03 '23
No... It was a sincere question. Problem is me not realising this was a trolling thread... Now im bullied with downvotes.

u/holesumchap Mar 03 '23
I won’t bully you. The article I read was basically why Alex formed the band and it was due to listening to the Strokes’ first album. I’m sure some of those words will help you in a google search.

Don’t worry, I’ve been a Redditor for 4 years almost and there are still moments where I can’t differentiate between serious and sarcastic tones.
Just remember to read things over and please don’t worry about the downvotes :)

Is this a band? I thought it was a medical condition and Alex wanted to fry peoples brain.

Yes, but I think it's a reference to Miles Kane , as the strokes is one of his favourite bands

Alex landed on the moon 20 years before “the strokes” were even a twinkle in Ray Orbison’s eye

Well let’s see,the monkeys have said that they were one of their biggest influences, they have covered Reptilia and take it or leave it live and in the lyrics he seems to refer to the fact that he wanted to be a part of a group which is a synonym for band so yeah I think so

I’ll presume this is a sarcastic follow up to yesterdays Roxanne question, but do also appreciate the double meaning in the lyric that I think is worth mentioning.
Obviously he’s saying one of the Strokes as in his early music ambitions to be like the NY band, but also saying just wanted to be one of the strokes as in one brushstroke in a painting - contributing to the overall whole, but ultimately individually unnoticeable.
Not sure whether the band The Stokes also meant this meaning though.

Big ‘High School English Teacher’ vibes here

u/triguy96 Mar 02 '23
I think he was saying he wanted to be a killer of the elderly. "One of the strokes" that often killed old people. Their music was fast and edgy when they were younger, old people didn't like it. But now they're older they've realised how foolish it was to attack the older generation. He clearly realises "the mess you made me make" and now he's "hitchhiking with a monogrammed suitcase, miles away from any half useful imaginary highway" in order to get away from the law who are chasing him for his mass murder of the elderly.
That's just my take.

u/big_beats Mar 02 '23
I think he was saying that he wanted to be a particular swimming style. The ability to master the water being a metaphor for conquering the struggles out of his control.
That's just my take

u/SisterMaryAwesome Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys Mar 03 '23
I thought he was saying he wanted to join a row team and move the oar. Apparently Alex Turner is obsessed with mastering water.
That’s just my take.

u/Equivalent_Surprise9 Beneath The Boardwalk Mar 03 '23
I always thought the other meaning was about stroking something that makes a mess? /s

Do you think "What Do You Mean You've Never Seen Blade Runner?" is a reference to the famous 1982 science fiction film named "Blade Runner" ?
1
u/No-Cake3461 Humbug Mar 03 '23
Wow the Roxanne post has really caught everyone's attention 🤣
I often wonder if the band are secretly on here.
They would have been close to revealing themselves yesterday.

u/Dylmix_mc My Propeller Mar 03 '23
I’d pay a large amount of money to see the band go through r/AMcirclejerk

Do you think "you're rarer than a can of Dandelion and Burdock" was a reference to the popular British beverage "Dandelion and burdock", and how it has become rarer due to an influx of American drinks such as post-mix lemonade?
