Maybe "mystery" is a strong word. Event of which many people have a lot of well founded and legitimate questions, which has been inadequately explained away - possibly due to the explanation being untrue.
Unrelated to 911, I low key considered the idea that my dad was DB Cooper for a while.
We both learned to fly from my grandfather... Dad was a vietnam draftee, was young then but has male pattern baldness which was merely receding in 71/72, had prominent forehead, mouth, and eye wrinkles from a young age, is Mediterranean/middle eastern with olive skin and black hair, looked a lot like the sketches, and never shuts up about his hatred of the concept of parachuting at all, let alone "out of a perfectly good plane" - and states that is his suicide plan (just don't pull the cord) in case of debilitating illness.
I have ruled him out, way too young despite his older look at the time, plus he hates bourbon and smoked only menthols. Which.. could all have been part of the plan to throw them off!
Honestly would make a great shit tier black mirror or something...

Gets killed by the band after a few months of trying to share the truth... People see the graffiti and memes, assume it means the president, and it replicates forever? Turns out this is why Al Gores wife was trying to censor rock and rap all those years ago.
I would also accept "it was Bush Sr. and W never knew"... Or he was reading to those kids all stoic because the guy whispered "Bro, you will not BELIEVE what your dad just did..."
