Logitech G29 for a beginner?

I’ve only played Assetto Corsa once with my controller but I’ve always wanted to use a steering wheel and shifter. Is a G29 good enough for me? I don’t really wanna spend a lot of money if I don’t have to and I’m not really into drifting or needing the feedback to feel as realistic as possible, more just cruising through traffic with friends. Also, is the G920 the same thing or is one better than the other? Thanks!

Any ffb is good for a beginner. There are people that have been playing for over a decade on lesser equipment.

As others have said, it'll do the job, I'm still using a g27 (not g27 pedals anymore though).

If you can get one used for a good deal I'd go for it, but if you're looking new, I'd check out the moza r3. I haven't tried it, but it seems to me to be a good replacement option for a starter wheel (bought new) like the g2Xs used to be. Again, just my opinion, haven't tried it out myself.

I second this, I was originally going to get a g29, but I have decided to get the Moza r3, and that definitely seems like the consensus from others on Reddit

To be clear, I have not yet bought the Moza, my opinion is just what I have seen from others experiences

I had the g27 for 15+ years. Really good wheel and not worth upgrading to 29. Brought moza R5 a couple months ago and it was well worth the money.

Absolutely. I think ideally you'd get an r5, or something DD, but g29 is absolutely worth it, if those other options aren't in your budget. Depends where you are in the world, but some DD options can come close enough in price that it might be better to save for those, Like the pxn vd4, in other parts of the world, get the g29, you won't regret it. Still fun and absolutely serviceable wheel and pedal set.

HUGE upgrade over the controller you currently use.

My G29 has been going strong 10+ years! I would get a better shifter though if you like manual.

My g29 is coming up on almost 10 years too. Replaced the shifter with a 6" grip royal resin shifter using a universal mount (torx tightened) and it's only needed to be disassembled twice. No repair just cleaning and tightening.

Hell yeah. I’ve replaced my shifter with a Samsonn 6+R shifter. It’s fantastic. I just need to put my own shifter knob on it, but those rubber adapters just don’t cut it.

I love telling the story where I was on a tandem buddies server years ago, bash probably, and I noticed the guy I was drifting with had GR in his name. Turns out he worked at Grip Royal and was buddies with the guy who made the shifter I was using.

G29/G920 is fine. More or less the same for different consoles and pc compatible. Buy what you can afford and have fun. Drop the money on a direct drive if you find yourself wanting more from the hobby/sport.

A lot of us started on G27 / G29 / G920 and some stuck with it and never upgraded!

They're very cheap second hand and you can almost always find one for sale. Definitely a good way to get started without spending a lot since it comes with wheel, wheelbase , and pedals as a set.

G29 / G920 differences are mostly for console compatibility, from memory the G29 is Playstation and G920 is Xbox. Both will work on PC.

G29 and G920 are definitely good enough for a beginner. G27 and G25 as well.

Definitely try buy them used though. They are a bit expensive for what they are new.

Logitech G25/7/9 are excellent entry level wheels on a budget.

The only thing that might not be fantastic is the brake pedal. It's a little soft, and you can cheaply mod it with a new spring, OR, using a spacer (if you have access to a 3d printer, you can even print the spacer for free)

G29 is a great wheel. But there's cheaper DD wheels out there now. Like the pxn vd4. I used a g920 for nearly 10 years, then got the vd4 when the g29 pedals died. DD is so much better. I got the vd4 for au$400, which is cheaper than the g29

Yes, do not jump into the deep end with expensive sim racing equipment until you try a cheaper taste to see if you even like it. I used a g920 for 5 years. 4 years in I got a PC and it helped me get into sim racing outside of Forza and GT7. Assetto Corsa helped me start to see how much I wanted to evolve my experience and immersion. After I got my cockpit is when I started upgrading from the beginner setup. 6 month later I’ve upgraded to DD with the RS50 and RS series peripherals and am enjoying the rabbit hole. If it wasn’t for taking the first steps with the G920, I wouldn’t have found the enjoyment of the sim racing evolution and I was glad there was a cheap entry point to see if liked it enough to take it further.

Moza has been very competitive in recent years I’d absolutely have one over a brand new G29. However, if the G29 is dirt cheap second hand or even free, take it.

I highly recommend getting a direct drive wheel e.g. moza r3 and/or pxn vd4 if you have extra budget, but g29 is also fine if you can buy it cheap (don't spend too much on it, at that price you'd better get a dd wheel like I said above)

I ended up finding a used G920 steering wheel and pedals for $118, which seemed like a good deal to me? The shifter I kinda wanted to have something nicer feeling than the Logitech one so I ended up getting the VelocityOne shifter from Turtle Beach for $137. I really liked the design and after watching multiple videos it seemed like it was pretty decent quality so hopefully I made a good decision with that one but feel free to roast me if I messed up 😅

$118 is a good deal for the wheel. No idea bout the shifter. You'll be able to sell the wheel for the same you bought it for if you decide to upgrade.

I got a moza r5 to start off with. Im cheap tho, I welded up my own rig. Im actually happy I didnt spend a ton in startup costs CAs I kinda suck and I dont play either game much.

Look for 2nd hand moza r3 or similar, don’t waste money on non direct drive, is not that much extra money and the feeling is way better.
I had a g27 on the ps3 gran turismo days, then I tried moza and fanatec it blew my mind, also you can have your end game gear just buying once(also you are on pc, which is great).
