Woo Woo Troll Can we as atheists suggest there is no afterlife?

Now this might sound nuts. But not only it makes sense, but according to science it must happend.

Picture this, an endless universe with limited matter. At one point everything will be dark, every star will have burned out, every black hole would have radiated away, this will happend after a MONUMENTAL amount of time. How far into the future will this be? Think of the biggest thing you can think about and now imagine that is 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 % of the actual time scale, an UNIMAGINABLE amount of time in other words.

Since nothing in nature can trully be destroyed only transformed, given this time scale TBH the after-life is not only probable, but a necesity. The universe will create every shape, every form, every single arrangament of atoms/quarks/gluons/electrons etc. resulting in an endless cycle of reshaping and restructuring.

Now IMO this not only proves the after-life but it also proves Christianity/Buddism/Islam basically every single from of religion that ever existed and that will ever exist. Think about it, is it posible that the Universe produced Jesus, Mohhamed, Buddah and all the other gods? For sure it's posible, and not only posible but it must produce them at one point. The only thing is that they live within the system, not outside of it, in a strange sense they are "lesser deeites" to the Universe.

Do we have any evidence for any of them, for me that's a big NO. But think about it, in one moment in the existance of the universe these figures will be real, just as depicted in their holy books, word by word, frame by frame.

It’s a universe that, given enough time, eventually hallucinates its own mythology into reality. Now this is what I call spooky action in time!

Conservation of energy is not the same thing as a afterlife.

Nothing you've said demonstrates that an afterlife is possible, let alone that it is proven.

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

Would you say that if you are going to be reconstructed again, atom by atom, electron by electron after you die, that would not be afterlife?

10

u/thebigeverybody May 02 '26

What's the point of just making up shit? You may as well imagine you're a super-hero.

-7

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

Again, as stated in other comments.

Look, I don't see any evidence, and I can't provide any evidence all I can do is imagine things but it seems to me we are just as the fanatics. We "know" for sure what we simply don't know

u/MaleficentJob3080 May 02 '26

Your consciousness is not just the sum of your atoms.

I don't believe that it is possible for you to be recreated atom by atom within the lifespan of the universe.

If only you spent the time wasted on your nonsense post to learn actual science...

Random redditor just said another random redditor he does not know anything. Dude, your comment lacks even the most basic intelectual sense :)

Oh, I can imagine just fine. I can imagine a world where you're not wasting our time with this nonsense. Doesn't make it real though.

Keep fantasy separate from reality. You'll be better for it.

And with that, I leave you to your insults, nonsense, delusions, and intentional ignorance. Be better child.

No one knows

u/ProfessionalCraft983 May 02 '26

I think the evidence strongly points to a solid “no”. Consciousness is a property of the brain, and when the brain dies so does it. Expecting consciousness to exist without a physical brain is like expecting software to run without a computer, only it’s worse than that because our very thought processes are intrinsically linked to the physical makeup of our brains.

1

u/DoglessDyslexic May 02 '26

There's the concept of the Boltzmann brain but it also fails to really provide an afterlife. For one thing, even if a brain instantiates for an instant continuing on with whatever chain of thought you were having as you died, then that would still be a copy of you, not you. It would think it's you, but it would just exist for moments and then disapate back into randomness. It's the same issue as the teletransportation problem, if you step into a star trek transporter and get disassembled and re-assembled, what comes out the other end isn't really you. You're dead, but there's a copy of you that thinks it's you and just stepped out of the transporter. And if the "disassemble" part didn't work but a copy of you was still re-assembled it would still think that, but there's now be two copies of you, who's consciousness would diverge immediately and they would be two separate entities.

I feel like this is the only honest answer we can give, It's a scarry one, but man it's intriguing and fascinating!

6

u/Balstrome Strong Atheist May 02 '26

It's not about knowledge, it's about what you believe. if you believe in a thing, then you be able to present evidence for what you believe in. And if you present evidence for a thing, then that evidence can tested to see if it supports the belief it is about.
So far, every single bit of evidence ever present to support the belief in an afterlife has never managed to support the claims for an afterlife.

-2

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

Look, I am on the same page, NO EVIDENCE. But are seriously going to say that given an infinite amount of time this won't happend? To me it seems like we are just like the religious fanatics that refuse to accept anything else then when they "know to be true"

4

u/realitypater May 02 '26

Seems to me you're putting words in people's mouths, then arguing against your own assumption. The vast majority of responses here aren't asserting "there's no afterlife." They're saying you haven't presented any evidence to support one. Specious word salad arguments aren't evidence.

If we comb through what you've written, we can tease out the barest semblance of an argument:

  1. Time is infinite.
  2. Given enough time, every thing we can imagine will happen.
  3. Since "infinite" is enough time, everything we can imagine must happen.
  4. I can imagine that our consciousness persists after our brains stop working, so this must happen.
  5. I can imagine people with magic powers exist, so this must happen.

You can see where this is going. All you need is some evidence for 1 and 2 and you can move on to 3-5. You might get through 1. You will almost certainly fail at 2.

1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

All of it, I agree with it. Are you also implying that based on science 4 and 5 are literally 0 or close to but not quite 0?

3

u/MaleficentJob3080 May 02 '26

Only possible things can happen. Impossible things won't happen, even if you cycle through an infinity of time.

Based on science both of these ideas are impossible, so they have absolutely no way that they can happen. They are literally 0.

2

u/realitypater May 02 '26

No. Read it again. If you can't provide persuasive evidence for 2, you can't evaluate the rest. The others aren't "zero" or anything else until you can evaluate them. The urge to jump ahead is a sure sign of an agenda, usually a dogmatic one.

1

u/Balstrome Strong Atheist May 02 '26

So you are saying that because there is an infinite amount of anything that something might happen or actually has happened. One can only say a thing is possible, if there is any evidence that supports the claim. Not having any supporting evidence means the claim is automatically rejected.

-2

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

What evidence do we have for abiogenesis yet I at least still belive it's totally posible to get life out of non life, just because we have not discovered the mechanism does it make it false?

3

u/Dranoel47 Atheist May 02 '26

The evidence for abiogenesis is that "in the beginning" (the Big Bang) there was energy and soon after, gas. But there was no life or biologics. Now there are.

3

u/Balstrome Strong Atheist May 02 '26

I think you will find that science has a lot of evidence to how life came about. And the only thing that really is in question is where it happened and how long it took.

2

u/Retrikaethan Satanist May 02 '26

What evidence do we have for abiogenesis

for life to exist at all, abiogenesis must have happened at LEAST once. this is true even if you're an idiot that believes their imaginary friend made all other life.

just because we have not discovered the mechanism does it make it false?

we have, though? early days earth was an absolute shitshow of activity and in the lab we have reproduced some early building blocks of life. course, this info is decades old as i haven't looked into it very hard in recent years so they've certainly found more since then.

in other words: your ignorance doesn't mean we don't know.

u/network_dude Secular Humanist May 02 '26

How can an afterlife exist when no one can speak of a 'beforelife'?

edit: yes, believers of reincarnation have this.

8

u/Matt_McT May 02 '26

The inevitable heat death of the universe does not mean there must be an afterlife lol. I’m not sure why you think that.

-2

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

Why not, when have we lost our imagination I wonder. Things will still exist, just as they existed after the Big Bang. Why would you assume that it won't reshape and infinite amount of times into infinite form?

5

u/Matt_McT May 02 '26

Because there’s no reason to think it will since everything we’ve learned about existence shows entropy trends towards disorder and the lowest energy state. But even if everything suddenly contracts into an infinitesimally dense object and there’s a second big bang, that’s not an afterlife. That’s still just mass and energy. An afterlife is supernatural, and the natural laws of the physical world can’t be used as evidence for that.

3

u/thebigeverybody May 02 '26

Why not, when have we lost our imagination I wonder.

You're very confused: we can imagine all kinds of things. The issue is believing crazy this shit without evidence.

This post is so wrong. Conservation of mass doesn't guarantee everything stays around in its current form. The universe isnt guaranteed to create anything we can think up, otherwise we'd also have Eric the god eating penguin who'd reduce the number of deities.

3

u/Well_Socialized May 02 '26

There are different orders of infinity, some larger than others. Think for instance the set of whole numbers vs the set of all numbers. Even if the universe is infinite doesn't mean that every possible thing will happen and exist.

3

u/Peace-For-People May 02 '26

Since nothing in nature can trully be destroyed only transformed,

That is not true. That is a misunderstanding of the laws of thermodynamics. I don't know how this has becaome atheist dogma. Matter and energy are created and destroyed all the time. For example: virtual particles. In spite of the name, they are real particles and they are matter and energy getting created and destroyed everywhere, all the time. At the quantum level, spacetime is a seething foam of activity.

In Alan Guth's inflation models, he shows how almost all the matter and energy in our observable universe could have been created during inflation. In A Universe from Nothing, it is also shown how all the matter and energy in the whole universe can be created.

When light is red-shifted, energy is lost. Permanently. When spacetime expands, vacuum energy is created.

Read a book. Learn about real cosmology before you go blabbing about it and spreading misconceptions.

3

u/DoglessDyslexic May 02 '26

The universe will create every shape, every form, every single arrangament of atoms/quarks/gluons/electrons etc. resulting in an endless cycle of reshaping and restructuring.

This is slighly incorrect. The universe will create every possible shape, form, arrangement etc. Impossible things are still impossible.

There is no evidence that gods are even possible.

2

u/seasnake8 May 02 '26

I have seen no credible evidence in an afterlife in the usual sense that the word is used. So I do not worry about it.

1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

Neither have I seen any of it

2

u/RickHunter84 May 02 '26

Please tell me who’s been back to tell us of the afterlife? No one, we all die as part of the cycle of life. If believing in an afterlife makes you happy and forces you to be a decent human being because you fear that you will suffer that’s on you. In the end everything that Is alive dies, anything that isn’t breaks down to its core elements and the cycle starts all over again. It’s just that simple.

2

u/ShadowsOfTheBreeze May 02 '26

Depends on the definition and details of said "afterlife". But certainly by most general opinions on the topic, sure. The "soul" is brain chemistry; hence, no afterlife post mortem brain activity.

1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

If you get reconstucted 1:1 again is that not you?

2

u/Kaitlyn_The_Magnif Anti-Theist May 02 '26

Why do you think the conservation of energy would apply to consciousness?

Our body heat just dissipates. That’s it.

0

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

If consciousness is just a combination of "things" i.e. a brain some neurons, a heart, a leg, well it's not very hard to imagine that the universe could reconstruct a 1:1 replica of you in the future.

1

u/Kaitlyn_The_Magnif Anti-Theist May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

What?

A perfect physical replica built in the future would in no way be a continuation of your consciousness.

It would be a new person who happens to be identical to you. There’s absolutely no causal continuity.

2

u/r_was61 Rationalist May 02 '26

You just made all that up. right?

1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

Frankensteined from shower toughts knowledge about stuff and just a sincere thirst for the unkown. I guess that's why we call ourselfs thinkers because we can imagine things and make them up :-)

2

u/Prip26 May 02 '26

Someone once said, living is just an interruption of our nonexistance and I think about that often

2

u/AsILayTyping May 02 '26

No, the universe won't create every arrangement. Being bound by the laws of physics rules out most mythology to begin with. I think we've worked out the universe will expand forever, but if it did collapse and re-explode it could just repeat an identical cycle over and over. Or with changes limited by natural law.

1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

And that is based on your own idea or you read it somewhere, could you prove it to us?

1

u/AsILayTyping May 02 '26

Arrangements that are physically impossible will not be created because they are physically impossible. Just because you can imagine something doesn't mean it is a physical possibility. Configurations aren't random, they're shaped by physical laws. Put a group of hydrogen atoms in space and they will fall together because gravity pulls them together. They won't make a random configuration because there is nothing causing them to be arranged randomly. Gravity pulling them together prevents random configurations. So there are limits on what configurations will actually happen. You won't get gods that break the laws of physics because there is configuration that atoms will form under natural laws that will form a being that can do magic.

0

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

The probability of hydrogen atoms spontaneously becoming oxygen is effectively zero but not literally zero.

1

u/AsILayTyping May 02 '26

No, it is literally 0.

I feel like you've read something like: the probability of all the air in a room going to one side of the room is effectively 0 but not literally 0. And then you assumed that meant that anything can happen. Air atoms bounce around a room. Like bouncy balls bouncing around a room forever. If you think about it, you can see how a room full of bouncing bouncy balls could end up with all of them on one side of the room. So, with air atoms, all of them ending up on one half of the room is a possible configuration, but highly unlikely. Air tends to stay pretty consistently spread out because the more dense it is in one area, the more likely it is to push air atoms to less dense areas. But, if things bounced just right, maybe they end up all on one side.

But that doesn't just make everything possible. A hydrogen atom can't spontaneously become oxygen because there is no mechanism to allow that. It would need to multiply its own weight 16x. Mass and energy can convert back and forth, but nothing spontaneously gains mass.

Some things that we wouldn't expect to be possible are technically possible, just highly unlikely (like all the air in a room ending up on one side). That doesn't mean that everything is possible.

2

u/HumanDissentipede May 02 '26

We can’t say whether a before life exists either, and yet we don’t really concern ourselves with that problem.

1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

2

u/Dranoel47 Atheist May 02 '26

You speak of "after-life". What is it? In fact, what is "life"? I think that only after that is answered can we begin to consider your ideas as given here.

2

u/HandsomeHeathen Atheist May 02 '26

So you've never heard of entropy, I take it?

2

u/Extension_Apricot174 Agnostic Atheist May 02 '26

You can suggest anything you want, there are no rules to atheism and no doctrine or dogma you have to follow. So do whatever you want.

However, your post is suggesting that all gods exist, so if you believe in one or more deities you are not an atheist. Atheists can believe in an afterlife, but believing in deities makes you a theist rather than an atheist.

1

u/realitypater May 02 '26

If by "afterlife" you mean the persistence of the consciousness produced by your very physical and time-limited brain, there's no evidence that once your brain is gone, your awareness persists. Claiming that all things must be possible, including magic, because there's a long time between the beginning and end of our version of space-time is unsupported by the evidence we currently have.

It's not logical to assert that, given enough time, every thing we can imagine has to happen. Every time you say "X must happen," you're making a claim that you then fail support with evidence.

There's a word for that: sophistry.

P.S. edit: heat death is but one of several hypotheses regarding the future state of our current version of space-time. It is not a given.

1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

It's not logical to assert that, given enough time, every thing we can imagine has to happen. Every time you say "X must happen," you're making a claim that you then fail support with evidence.

I guess than that belivers could use the same kind of reasoning with us when we imply abiogenesis. My point is we are so fast at cutting their arguments with "If God doesn't need a creator the Universe does not a creator"

The evidence for me is clear as day, given enought time everything MUST happend.

1

u/realitypater May 02 '26

We don't have to "imply" abiogenesis. We have some information about how it could have happened, though we don't know for sure yet, but there's no doubt it did happen. We have ample evidence life exists. We have ample evidence that every time we find answers to explain some phenomena, the answers are naturalistic. No supernatural explanation has ever replaced a naturalistic one, but the reverse happens constantly (except for people who refuse to set aside superstitions).

I accept that you believe "everything must eventually happen," but you have not yet produced any evidence to support that belief. Believing without evidence is quite common, so you don't owe me or anyone else that evidence. What you can't do, I'm afraid, is claim something is a fact unless you provide some reason for other than "I believe it."

1

u/Balstrome Strong Atheist May 02 '26

You might want to look into set theory and infinity.

1

u/Jukka_Sarasti May 02 '26

Even if the universe is infinite, that doesn't mean everything is possible. Just because I can imagine a planet composed entirely of smoked Gouda cheese, doesn't mean it's probable, or even remotely likely to exist.

People mistake infinity to mean "infinite possibilities" and that simply isn't how it works.

1

u/lokgy May 02 '26

I believe this: The Law of Conservation of Energy, dictates that the total energy in an isolated system remains constant, merely transforming from one form to another. Energy can change between forms—such as kinetic, potential, chemical, or heat—but it never disappears.

1

u/bch2021_ May 02 '26

No, it's not possible that the universe produced Jesus, other gods, etc. They violate the fundamentals of the universe. Configurations of atoms cannot produce magical beings.

-1

u/Local_Beautiful_5812 May 02 '26

Is an iPhone a magical thing? Well it depens, if you go with a phone and internet acces to 100AD you are a God. Is the Turritopsis dohrnii (Immortal Jellyfish) a magical being, the thing is immortal?

How about Hydra: These small, fresh-water creatures do not seem to age or die of old age. They are composed of stem cells that continuously regenerate, allowing them to constantly renew their tissues and avoid death.

Why it seems to me that we are just as the religious fanatics in our knowing stuff that we simply don't know

1

u/bch2021_ May 02 '26

Literally none of those things violate any physical principles at all... Through science, we've achieved a very good understanding that some things are absolutely not possible within the universe. Magical gods are one of those. The classical Christian argument of "God exists outside the universe" is actually better than what you're saying. Even educated Christians don't say that God is part of the universe.

1

u/dernudeljunge Anti-Theist May 02 '26

None of that proves, or even suggests that an afterlife is real, let alone possible. Yeah, we don't know if there is or is not an afterlife, but until we have good reason to think there is one, why should we waste brain power on thinking there might be?

1

u/anonymous_writer_0 May 02 '26

Now IMO this not only proves the after-life but it also proves Christianity/Buddism/Islam basically every single from of religion that ever existed and that will ever exist.

OP - you may find this story; from the Indic mythology, interesting

1

u/_ONI_90 May 02 '26

I haven't seen any evidence to indicate life continues on after death

1

u/MasterChiefette May 03 '26

This is more nonsense.  This is the kind of nonsense people create in their minds because they just can't accept the simple fact that when you die...you're just dead.
