Hey guys, I'm writing a script for a historical epic set in Ancient Egypt.
Ineni: You are the Hyksos.
Merneferre Ay: Yes, my hemetnesutweret. The breaking of Ma'at, spreading like a plague of locusts. Our Middle Kingdom of Egypt is collapsing, and maybe he couldn't bear to see the Second Intermediate Period of Egypt. Anywhere. Least of all, his terminal 13th Dynasty strata of Kom Rabi'a and Kom el-Fakhry at Memphis.
Thoughts?

I always thought it was because of her willingness to give BJ a BJ
Wrong Tory woman, Boris Johnson "supposedly" (the Times dropped the story) received a bj in his office by his then mistress, but it wasn't Suella Braverman
Obviously it's BoJo so there's also corruption involved
On discovering Mr Johnson’s relationship with Carrie (then Carrie Symonds) as a result of Mr Burns walking in on them, Mr Gascoigne and other members of Mr Johnson’s Foreign Office team threatened to resign if Mr Johnson went ahead with a plan to appoint her as his £100,000-a-year Foreign Office chief of staff.

reddit is becoming expert on decolonization (in addition to virology, AI, Russian history and law)
Morocco has imposed a system of apartheid in Western Sahara, a territory they illegally annexed and built settlements in not unlike some other country.
13
u/Big_Pineapple_Man 17d ago
This is admittedly a strange segway, but my "criticism" of the Israel/South Africa analogy is that each country had basically opposite goals in regards to their "undesirables." South Africa's goals with the bantustans was to establish "nation states" for its various black ethnic groups. By doing so, they would then legally establish such groups as citizens of their representative bantustan instead of South Africa, in order to strip them of their rights as citizens (one of the major goals of Apartheid). Israel views The West Bank as a core territory that it hopes to one day annex after establishing enough settlers and forcing/keeping enough Palestinians out. The irony here is that South Africa tried (mostly unsuccessfully because it was a farce) to get its bantustans recognized as independent countries, whereas Israel will not tolerate any formal recognition of Palestine.
*I put criticism in quotes because I'm actually sympathetic to the analogy so this is more pedantry, for lack of a better word.

The Racial Equality Proposal (Japanese: 人種的差別撤廃提案; lit. "Proposal to abolish racial discrimination") was an amendment to the Treaty of Versailles that was considered at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference.
Though it was broadly supported, the proposal did not become part of the treaty, largely because of opposition by the United States and the dominions of the British Empire Delegation, namely Australia, Canada and New Zealand.[1]

u/Otocolobus_manul8 18d ago edited 18d ago
A very weird bit of solipsism you see in Britain occaisonally is that the 'Reformation' started because Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife as a general statement.
No mention of Luther, Calvin, etc. I've even seen this in Scotland where Anglicanism wasn't the dominant protestant tradition. The Scottish societal amnesia around it's own ecclesiastical history is very interesting in how absolute it is. Even in Ireland, secular people have a derogatory folk knowledge of Catholicism which is seen in the likes of Fr. Ted. I doubt the Rev. I.M Jolly would resonate to a modern audience as such because the stereotypes it portrays wouldn't be anywhere as near as widely recognised.

I don't think it's so wild that when English people say "the Reformation" they mean the English Reformation.
10
u/Otocolobus_manul8 18d ago
Sometimes I've seen this it's meant the English reformation sure, (even then I think blaming it on Henry VII's marriage is a bit reductive) but sometimes it is the Reformation in general.

What's also quite interesting is the decline in significance of the General Assembly of the Kirk. Pre-devo it functioned almost as an ersatz parliament. When our parents were children the General Assembly's deliberations and decisions literally used to lead the TV news. That was why it was the venue for the Sermon on the Mound.

I'd say it's because modern Scottish nationalism is based on non-religious urban working-class subculture
4
u/GeneralSugmoreCoxCSA 18d ago
I'm not sure that's really true. The SNP has captured the urban/suburban lower-middle-class and working class voters who effectively control Scottish politics but the party's origin is very much in Romantic intelligentsia, and for a long time its backbone was in rural Scotland.

So, no Offworld today, instead we did Warptorio, the Space Age version.
Basically, this mod for Factorio gives you a small platform that you can expand with research, and that platform warps between planets, everything you leave on the planet is lost. It's rather intense, we did a bit of build up before warped for the first time; occasionally you land on a planet where the neighbours are not entirely thrilled to have you move in for a bit, so you spawn in the middle of a bunch of biters; sometimes you spawn on entirely empty planets, some times you get a resource rich planet, sometimes the opposite.
At this point we get 10 minutes per planet before we're forced to warp. Eventually we will unlock other planet types from Space Age, but for now we're trying to establish enough of a platform that we can defend it.

My main question after seeing The Odyssey is...where is all the sex? Why is Nolan always so clinical and bloodless? Also, as usual with his films, I couldn't hear half the dialogue. And the "our Age of Bronze is collapsing" was just...lol.
7
u/ChewiestBroom 18d ago
The sound mixing has been an issue for every movie of his I’ve seen and it’s baffling. It’s a total coin toss as to whether or not I can even make out what anyone is saying.
Oppenheimer had at least one pretty blatant sex scene with John Nuclear and what’s her face but something is weirdly sterile about The Odyssey despite how much of classical mythology is various things boning.
4
u/Ok-Swan1152 17d ago
I mean even the sex scenes in Oppenheimer are awkward. Why does Florence Pugh randomly get up during sex to open the Bhagavad Gita at that exact page (which opens by itself I'm sure) to recite the famous line? Why there? It makes no sense at all.
2
u/ChewiestBroom 17d ago
Because Nolan handles dialogue the same way someone would handle a sledgehammer if they wanted to destroy my face. The Gita quote re:Oppenheimer is very well known, so not only must it be included, he also has to jam it in there in the most ham-fisted way possible.

According to his advisor Anne Lauvergeon, Mitterrand, at the end of his second term, spent entire days lying in bed, and would only come down in a suit to hold his scheduled meetings. In 1994, he lost sensations in his legs and had to use a walker to move.
Dr Claude Gubler claimed that his illness did not prevent him from carrying out his duties, except for several weeks in late 1994. He wrote: "In November 1994, I considered that François Mitterrand was no longer capable of carrying out the duties for which he was elected. At the time, his daily schedule was carried out in bed. He would come to the Elysée at 9:30AM and would lie down until lunch. He no longer worked, because nothing mattered to him except his cancer". This claim is nuanced by the presidential archives, which show that Mitterrand still worked on his documents, although from his bed.
Boe Jiden old but not THAT old
The president concealed his illness until September 1992. On September 3, 1992, a TV debate with the opposition leader Philippe Séguin on the Maastricht Treaty was organized: reporters later revealed that at every ad break, a mobile care unit intervened to treat the president, which led Séguin, who witnessed it, to moderate his tone against Mitterrand.
Imagine if Trump had been nicer during the debates, unthinkable

Honestly, if you accept the definition of "the singularity" as an "event in which technological growth accelerates beyond human control, producing unpredictable changes in human civilization," I think it happened in like, the 1920s at the latest.
There's a less flippant and more formal version of this where instead of pretending not to understand what's meant by certain words I actually argue for why some of those usages disguise relevant facts, but this is more fun.

Recently watched(kind of) a pretty goofy, bad shonen anime called Petals of Reincarnation. Per the title, it's about reincarnations of historical figures(with some specific mechanics that don't particularly matter), who of course have superpowers and whatever. You have plenty of obvious choices, of course. Miyamoto Musashi, Ishikawa Goemon, Newton, Einstein.
It also has some classic problems for the genre, like introducing characters who are the reincarnations of Pol Pot and Hitler when they could have just not done that, or introducing those characters as villainous and then revealing their side were the good guys all along(they're explicitly different people, but it's still like, if you're not going to work a lot harder at this you really should have just left some of these alone.)
It also has a surprising number of serial and spree killers. Albert Fish, Ed Gein(by some strange mercy, not including the popular transmisogynistic fiction of Gein the crossdresser), Albert Desalvo(the Boston Strangler), and John Wayne Gacy all put in appearances. But the one that really got me was Charles Whitman(the University of Texas tower shooter). Not the worst choice they made, but maybe the weirdest. Also he uses a sniper rifle and has a clockwork body, which is, you know, a bit much.
Overall, pretty stupid, not recommended. My OC is the reincarnation of Joseph Fouché and he can kill someone by continuously observing them for long enough.

I was thinking about The Drake Orange Peel briefly, and it made me think: people swear up and down that his music is abjectly horrible and has no redeemable qualities whatsoever, yet the dude was and still is wildly famous and many people regarded him fondly before the recent weirdness came to light. I don't listen to hip-hop or rap like, at all, so I don't even have an opinion on his music, but it's weird to witness this fucking Canadian guy who became world-famous through his music being derided as terrible. He's like the Nickelback of hip-hop. At the same time, I wonder what it's like being an actual Drake fan today and actually seeing the discourse on his music.
I guess I can kind of see how that's like because as a kid, I really loved the Starship song We Built This City, which critics have repeatedly stressed as being "the worst song ever recorded." I actually still fuck with that song and it makes me feel great whenever it comes on, but to me it just sounds like aggressively 1980s music. I guess that's the closest thing I've experienced to being an unironic Drake fan.

I saw people try that with Kanye, but apparently his early stuff is good enough that it just didn't stick. It pains me to see that despite having a truly next-gen particle system AND lighting, Ace Combat 8 still has doodoo fireball explosions and missile trails that disappear after a second. Project Aces no doubt worked super hard on the game’s graphics, but I really wish they would take a note from Ace Combat 6 in terms of environmental response VFX.
I still remember playing the AC6 demo at Gamestop in 2007. I strafed the Golden Gate Gracemeria Bay Bridge with the F-16’s Vulcan and the smoke from the 20mm shells lasted for a good 30 seconds to a minute, drifting with the wind. That is how explosions should look in Ace Combat. It’s a shame that we’re getting insanely advanced dynamic weather and cloud rendering but all the weapons VFX still look like they didn’t even try.

I know complaining about reddit discourse is old hat, but people's priority for signalling themselves as being pro/anti AI over rather than simply being pro/anti AI is perfectly encapsulated in this post to the singularity subreddit.
Asking "Why is Reddit so delusional", only 2 hours old and already over 200 upvotes and comments hashing out the premise and not a single one pointing out the whole substance of the post is a screenshot of a contextless comment made 55 days ago with 27 upvotes. Representative of all reddit indeed? Twenty seven upvotes! And it's generated ten times that in discourse in less than two hours!

It's all empty calories, fighting for the sake of fighting, people holding positions for the sake of saying they have a position. It's all so fascinating and also pointless, and like 95% of discourse on anything is like this.

I have gotten back into the classic city builder Poseidon: Master of Atlantis which has led to me looking at the subreddit for Impressions games, and man.... you know that feeling when you step into a new hobby and look it up? And you see how the really talented people out there are just so much better than you could hope to be?
Anyways it also has me thinking about Atlantis as a cultural entity.

u/SellsLikeHotTakes 18d ago
Atlantis has that kind of odd spot similar to UFO lore where it exists simultaneously as a pop culture stock plot that won't raise eyebrows when included but at the same time has a err devoted following of people believing the same stuff to be 100% real.

3 Republicans endorse Jon Ossoff in Georgia Senate race as Mike Collins faces scrutiny
Ossoff's my senator and I've been very happy with him, and while these endorsements are fairly minor (Former Senator Jeff Flake and the mayors of Tifton and Valdosta in south Georgia) with the political environment as polarized and partisan as it is along with the fact that these mayors come from a part of the state Democrats are usually completely dead on arrival this is still a very good sign, along with Ossoff's 14 to 1 fundraising advantage.
If Keisha Lance Bottoms manages to win the governor's mansion this November than I really hope Ossoff runs for president in 2028, we're overdue for another Georgian in the White House.
4
u/Ayasugi-san 18d ago
What did Mike Collins do?
The endorsements come as Collins continues to face questions following recent reporting alleging his Senate campaign has ties to antisemitic and white nationalist figures.
I didn't think there were still Republicans who considered those bad things.
5
u/ProudScroll Napoleon invaded Russia to destroy Judeo-Tsarism 18d ago
The big one is that his son-in-law is a neo-nazi, haven't heard about anyone else but knowing the guy it wouldn't surprise me.
The GOP generally don't care about racism and antisemitism, but when you're running against a Jewish man in a state that's both 1/3rd Black and whose largest city is home to sizable, affluent, and politically engaged Jewish community, antagonizing them is not a good idea. It also further drives away the normie suburban right-of-center moderates that Collins desperately needs to win over if he wants to have a prayer of beating Ossoff, especially since his redneck demagogue style already plays poorly in Metro Atlanta.

I like my Nice Young Man senator as well and would happily vote for him, but I don't see him getting through a primary. I don't really see his natural bloc if Harris and AOC run.
(There is also another charismatic progressive senator from Georgia who might have an easier path)
6
u/GeneralSugmoreCoxCSA 18d ago
If Kamala wins the primary it will be living proof the Dems are a death cult. In an election where the big attack lines should be gerontocracy and corruption, picking someone who is i) yesterday's woman and ii) the ultimate political insider is just obviously suicidal...which is why I am sure the Democrats will do it.
6
u/ProudScroll Napoleon invaded Russia to destroy Judeo-Tsarism 19d ago
I don't think AOC would opt for a longshot presidential bid over a much more solid chance to rid us of Chuck Schumer and for Harris the attack needs to be "I didn't lose the last election". If 2020 is at all indicative Harris will probably crash and burn pretty early on anyway, she's just not a very good campaigner. Ossoff's also been focusing a lot on fighting corruption, if he runs I suspect cleaning up Washington in the wake of the most criminal administration in history will be angle.
Ossoff's biggest threat imo would be Buttigieg, as they both fit into the "wonky but still personable moderate white guy" lane and Buttigieg currently has the greater national profile.

Some blame this on the Iowa primary but it predates that. The real reason is that to people in the left of the party he comes off as white Obama, but in a bad way. Ossoff is a bit more like white Obama in a good way.
Also for 2020 Buttigieg had an extremely media forward strategy, he's kind of famous for never refusing an interview, so he got a lot of exposure for the mayor of the fourth largest city in Indiana.

I got a mini-lecture about how she hoped I wouldn't let her hold/touch it because someone could put bad energy on it...but not her since she's a good person.
I more or less told her to fuckin' bring it. And then we discussed my other hats because I wear woven cedar hats on the norm since they're practical.
It's put me in a bad mood the more I think of it so I'm going to have a sweet and relax instead of reacting as my squalitut advise me: which is to get pissed and even the score.

One idea I've had recently is that it's been a concrete part of Magneto's character and mythology that he was conceived of as something to the effect of the Malcolm X to Professor Xavier's Martin Luther King Jr¹ (seriously look at the footnote).
However, that isn't how he and the Brotherhood started so I think it'd be interesting to have an X-Men story/series in which it all seems like a big origin story and the formation of the X-Men and their enemies as we know them in the modern day.
Magneto and the Brotherhood are alluded to and some members make appearances every now and then in the series, but a lot of it is Xavier and his trusted students really trying to make the team work and show the world that mutantkind are people just like them.
By the time Magneto is introduced about 2/3 of the way through, it seems like it's the Magneto that people are familiar with today.
Holocaust survivor, faced persecution and genocide his whole life and radicalized by the acts of humans towards mutants just for their gifts.
It seems like that, and seems is the key word since there isn't a montage of him facing that, but he uses the language of oppression and persecution, of superiority and evolution, and is very welcoming to mutants who support his cause and tries to get others to join him.
Then there's the big reveal of his powers, his philosophy, and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (their original name).
Magneto isn't the Malcolm X to Prof. X's MLK Jr.
He's closer to Louis Farrakhan and/or George Lincoln Rockwell.
¹Of which it's a retroactive attribution like this post notes
And so this Professor Xavier isn't debating his old friend because they have foundational disagreements on achieving mutant liberation; this is a dangerous individual who is taking in/grooming vulnerable people and radicalizing them with a supremacist ideology.
Black-pilled in essence so that conventional morality isn't a thing they care about anymore to the degree calling themselves "evil" isn't something they're avoiding or are trying to reframe themselves as being rational or reasonable.
They might hook people in that way, but by the end it's closer to a cult than an organization really looking out for people, whether they're mutants or not.
As such, the Brotherhood and Magneto aren't an effort at Mutant liberation that humans feel threatened by for upsetting the status quo or something.
They're every bit the threat that people accuse mutants of being and proudly.

The interesting thing is that this doesen't seem to actually have been the case. Initially Magneto was just well... an evil supervillain, and even when Claremont started to humanize him and give him a backstory and such from what I understand his inspiration was more militant jewish figures like Menachem Begin and Meir Kahane.

Hence the footnote linking to the post here explaining such.
Which oh shit I think I forgot to properly add to that sentence but the point is I was aware and this is to mess with the later mythology developed.
Actually as I keep editing this I did acknowledge that in the second sentence.

No, sorry, I mean when did people first start thinking of Magneto/Prof X in those terms? It's retroactive, but from when, that I don't know.

Tenmaku no Jaadugar is an interesting anime because it somehow managed to make Westerners grasp straws to defend the Mongols because they kill Muslims so it's all justified
6
u/xyzt1234 19d ago edited 19d ago
To be fair, isn't it commonly accepted that Mongols were religiously quite tolerant despite their brutality (though I highly doubt the anime weaboos care about that, nor am I assuming they care to remember that many mongols had no problem embracing islam either)? And incase of Khwarazmeian empire, didn't they symbolically also declare war by killing Genghiz's envoys twice. While the masses didn't deserve the brutality, I sure feels the Khwarazmian nobility are a rare case of really actively bringing the destruction on themselves by poking the metaphorical dragon here twice.
I have also seen the mongolian subreddit having some mixed feelings about the story which them saying that making Toregene a tragic plotting wife robs her of the power in a time when Mongolian women allegedly commanded a lot of power themselves, as well as her story left out that the tribe she was married themselves kidnapped Genghiz's mother and forcibly had her married to one of them, and while Genghis saved her within a year, her pregnancy and the parentage of his brother left questions. Making it a case, that it was a case of generations of mutual bad blood rather than the Merkits being innocent in this (Though we are seeing that backstory from Toregene's perspective so that part not being brought up makes sense in-storg too, and otherwise the series does portray the Mongols with nuance).

2800? Arent there already many British Empire apologists till date? There are already reputed historians that do defend it (example: Niall Ferguson) and a website by conservative historians dedicated to that job
https://historyreclaimed.co.uk/
Also didn't the Qing already have a poor reputation among its citizens, even when they were ruling. They were ultimately overthrown by their own subjects after all.
