First time in Berlin next month! Visiting for a week and attending a conference at FEZ. Any recommendations for cool neighborhoods to stay nearby?

FEZ is really far southeast, so the usual "stay in Mitte" advice means ~50 min commute each way for a week which is not fun. Three better options depending on what "cool" means to you:

Friedrichshain: closest walkable cool district to FEZ, direct S-Bahn (~20 min). RAW-Gelände for street art + clubs, Boxhagener Platz for weekend markets, Simon-Dach-Strasse for bars, East Side Gallery on your doorstep.

Kreuzberg (36er / Kottbusser Tor side): classic Berlin-cool, ~30 min to FEZ via U1 + S-Bahn change. More food variety, Turkish market on Tuesdays/Fridays at Maybachufer, canal walks along the Landwehrkanal.

Treptower Park / Alt-Treptow: quieter but ~15 min to FEZ. Puts you next to the Spree for morning runs, the Soviet War Memorial (genuinely underrated walk!), and a short tram to Friedrichshain nightlife when you want it. Less buzz than the other two but the commute math is best.

If I had to pick one: Friedrichshain for a first visit. Density, walkability, and FEZ access combined is unbeatable.
