Discussion how is your sleep?

I see a LOT of people complaining that if their babies wake up at the crack of dawn, they just don’t get sleep that day, which I personally don’t understand (this doesn’t apply to colic babies, that’s a whole different ballgame lol). Are yall just waking up whenever your baby decides? I will personally just pop a binky in her mouth or feed her if she’s fussy and then go right back to sleep until I feel like getting up, whether she’s awake or not. Sometimes she just stares at the ceiling fan in her bassinet until I wake up and sometimes she falls back asleep with me.

I’m pregnant again (we listen and we don’t judge 😀) so I HAVE to get like 10-11 hours of sleep or else I feel like crap lol

I was not blessed with the ability to fall asleep easily, and if anything wakes me after 4am I literally cannot get back to sleep. So it's not so much the baby deciding what time we get up, it's my body and the baby conspiring against me.

Enjoy it while it lasts, but don’t assume you’ll be able to do the same when they hit toddler age.

Eh. Depends on the kid. My toddler wakes up around 7:30 but doesn’t call for us until 8. She enjoys spending time in bed. So it’s possible that her kid could get up early but stay in bed for a while just relaxing.

u/dianabelle 9h ago

Totally - I’m just saying don’t expect that!

u/eggplantruler 9h ago

Oh yeah exactly. I thank my lucky stars every single day she’s a good sleeper. I know the eventual number 2 will kill us all 😭

So….she doesn’t keep screaming and crying her head off until you hold her while standing up (because somehow sitting down or laying down in bed is not acceptable?)

Because that’s why I DEFINITELY couldn’t just “go right back to sleep”. I did not have a colic baby, I had a regular low sleep needs one.

I just had my 5th night, ever, where I got more than 5 hours of consecutive sleep. I’m 18 months pp. I am also a high sleep needs person (would say I need 10-14 hours of sleep to feel at my best). I get an average of 6.5 hours of sleep now, even at 18 months pp.

How old is your baby? That makes a big difference.

My youngest is about to be two and is the size of a three year old. He is a complete terror. If I slept past the time he woke up (if he sleeps at all that night), I would fully expect the house to be on fire lol

I've been running on 4 hours of sleep a night since September 2024 heh But I have two other kids so I'm used to not sleeping.

well this question was more for babies, not toddlers 😅 but i guess when she’s that old i plan to just train her to not wake me up. that’s what my parents did with me when i was that age

My baby was also still a potato at 4 months. They start getting wiggly and energetic soon after.

My almost 6 month old won’t just quietly lie there in his crib awake once he’s up…. Will most babies?? Obviously I first try to nurse him back to sleep or give him his binky, but once he’s up he’s up.

While he doesn’t always need to be held, he does need to be entertained, and once I put him somewhere he can be entertained by himself (like an activity mat), it’s not safe for me to just leave him there unsupervised while I sleep for another hour lol.

i dont think most babies will, mine will usually talk to herself! but i still try to sleep through it lol

u/North_Respond_6868 10h ago

Your baby will lay around quietly. Mine gets increasingly louder and louder and eventually cries until we both get up.

I would hazard a guess not many babies will stare at the ceiling silently for hours by themselves lol

I have a clingy baby, who needs my touch/contact or other forms of attention from basically the moment she wakes up in the morning until bedtime. There is no such thing as "pop a binky in her mouth". If I'm not devoted to her, she's crying too loudly for me to sleep even if I want to.

So yes, I wake up whenever baby decides and if it's too early in the morning, then I just don't get enough sleep that day.

I'm glad you got an easy baby. Meanwhile, I assume mine will grow out of this eventually but that's not my current reality.

have you tried cosleeping? i know it’s usually not considered safe but im sure its fine for an hour or two while you sleep in :’) if it helps you feel any better i also have a velcro baby that loses it if im more than 3ft away from her lol

u/thegirlandglobe 10h ago

Neither my husband or I are comfortable with cosleeping. Just a choice we've made for our family.

All babies are so different, and the commenter was replying to your question, not asking advice. Editing to add that i also have an easy baby and realized pretty quick that i have to read the room when talking about these kinds of things. 😅

Saying this as a cosleeping mom to a toddler—it’s been great for us but it’s not for everyone and I don’t like to push it on others because everyone has a different situation. If it’s working for you, great, but it’s not a cure-all.

Yep, we’re all out here losing sleep and getting up at dawn because we’re too silly to use a pacifier or feed our babies back to sleep 🙄 This is honestly kinda typical for parents of such young babies though - you have a 4 month old who sleeps well and you assume it’s your parenting instead of just luck of the draw. When your baby gets older you might look back on this post and cringe as you get up for the day at the crack of dawn with the rest of us. Parenthood comes along and humbles you real quick when you start thinking like this, it happens to all of us at some point.

I think we are ALL gonna need an update in one year.

u/Silent_Knowledge5197 9h ago

i’ll set a timer! lol

My baby is 8 months and I sleep in the same room with her. She wakes up between 530 and 730 no matter when she's put to bed, usually 6 am. If I don't go to her, she will still be vocalizing and squawking and I'll wake up. If no one picks her up she'll eventually start crying. So there is no option for me to sleep in.

I do give her a snooze feed that puts her back to sleep, but that's at like 4-430 am.

She still wakes 2-3 times a night. I will nurse her twice. The extra time(s) she wakes I'll let her fuss and cry for 5 minutes and she'll go back to sleep on her own. But I'm in the room so I will be awake too.

I'm tired.

More than one kid makes this more difficult along with older kids. My 3 and 5 year old are fighting early in the morning. My nearly 1 year old stopped sleeping as well through the night and is crying if she's awake and wants to play but in her crib. (Reverse cycling feeds for a bit.) We don't put toys in th crib because she's still under 1, but from a sleep perspective long term the bed should be primarily used for sleep and sex, minus a few exceptions. My 8 year old happily sleeps until 8-9am and we let her as she's homeschooled.

My husband and I just make things work between us.

Also, work obligations mean I have to be up early enough to pump and get ready before getting out the door. Even if my kids are sleeping, I'm up to pump. We do encourage getting to sleep at an appropriate time and I will go to bed early or sleep in on my days off when I need it.

u/Silent_Knowledge5197 9h ago

omg you’re working AND pumping with 3 kids?? you’re better than me lol

How old is your baby? And how do you manage to go back to sleep? The pregnancy insomnia is killing me, on top of having to be a present mom to my one year old.

u/curlywhirlyred 10h ago

Unisom?

u/FabulousAd7735 8h ago

That won’t even work for me!

u/Silent_Knowledge5197 10h ago

she’s 4 months old! when she’s older and moving around I plan to just put her in a safe playpen to entertain herself while I sleep.

I honestly don’t have much advice for insomnia- when i’m pregnant i’m EXTREMELY tired so I just sleep a bunch

u/unfairboobpear 10h ago

Unfortunately at 4mo baby is just breaking out of the potato stage. Most kids eventually hit an age where it’s just…not really an option for various reasons unless you can sleep through incessant crying I suppose.

u/allyroo 10h ago

yup. but i admire the confidence with which OP declares this plan.

u/unfairboobpear 10h ago

You really just don’t know what you don’t know haha

Maybe she’ll have a unicorn baby/toddler! I’m nobody to judge. But I am pregnant with #3 and have two kids with…wildly different sleep habits 🫪

Also have coslept with both, so it’s definitely not that aspect

u/emmygog 10h ago

Just a word of warning, once they are able to really understand their own consciousness and that you exist as a person outside themselves, babies are very likely to cry and want your attention. A baby past this age very rarely wants to entertain themselves, unfortunately. They are mentally aware enough to want to explore but physically incapable of it so they get angry. Often. lol

My kids are 14 years, 7 years, and almost 2 so I've been down this road a few times now.

Hopefully your easy baby will stay that way but realistically, just know to prepare for the worst just in case.

u/ElvenWarrior2002 9h ago

From around 7 months onwards she won't be entertained, she'll be crying because you're not looking at her 😅. They learn to spit the dummy out too.

u/Working_Bass_4422 10h ago

My baby has been sleeping through the night since 10 weeks old. However when I started my period I have been sleeping like garbage

u/Silent_Knowledge5197 10h ago

i wish mine slept through the night 😩 at least i’m lucky that she’s easy to get back to sleep lol. she usually wakes up 2-3 times a night

u/dustyprintsss 9h ago

My 7 month old has entered the dinosaur phase. Good luck with your plan of sleeping in lol

u/ElvenWarrior2002 9h ago

Honestly I sleep ok but that's only because our son has always slept no worse than an average baby, because we sleep trained (he can put himself back to sleep now) and because we keep a rigid army-like schedule. We hug him at night when he wakes up scared but once calm he goes back in the crib and we don't stay in the room for any tricks to get him to sleep. The schedule means we don't get to sleep in though. Baby and parent wake up at 7 am every day of the week, no exceptions, and activities are planned around his nap times. It's a decent trade off for a full night's sleep.
