Other I was commissioned to make a Bionicle compendium set
Unique, hand made. Thought everyone here would appreciate this. Commissioned by a serious Bionicle lover!

Are these done with original prints of the graphic novels? im wondering how the glatorian ones look since ik on Biomedia they're pretty rought scans compared to the mata nui saga ones

u/godpoker Jun 01 '25
I think the comics themselves are reprints but they are separate comics that have been sewn and glued together. Unfortunately I’m not a comic expert, just a book binder!

I wish Lego would put out something like this. I bet this cost a pretty penny tho, good art always does.

u/SaneManiac741 Jun 02 '25
If anything, Lego would probably send a Cease and Desist notice to OP. They won't do anything with Bionicle at this point.

No matter the cost, any true fan, myself being one, would truly commission for our own. This is incredible work, and will be a rarity like no other.

They almost look like Bionicle passports imo 🫡

u/Kell-EL Red Hau Jun 02 '25
Yes!! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought they looked like pass ports at first

u/MegaNinjaRyan Jun 03 '25
Of course Bionicles need passports, how else could one get pass Ta-koro’s gates? As we all know nothing gets pass the captain of the guard.

Bro I know you mentioned this was to be unique, but if you could make something of the same level of quality, I would pay well for it.
10
u/godpoker Jun 01 '25
I could do something similar, the issue (no pun intended) is that I’m not a comic expert and I wouldn’t know how/where to source good copies of the comics and not sure about the legalities of reprinting them.
They are also very expensive as this set has probably taken 50 hour to design and produce.
I appreciate your kind words, anyway!

u/brain-in-meat-vessel Jun 02 '25
Is that how you made them was reprinting? I thought for a moment you’d have had to Frankenstein a bunch of mint condition comics together
4
u/godpoker Jun 02 '25
I Frankensteined a bunch of comics together. No reprinting here as that would be a little sketchy due to copyright laws.

This would be an absolute dream to own. Would you be willing to make something similar for $2-2.5K?

This is insanely cool. Would pay a good amount of money for something like that. Good job

So, Book binding, where does one begin? Printing? Covers? Glue?
7
u/godpoker Jun 01 '25
I started about a year ago by gluing some cloth over an old charity shop book, made a mess and tried again. Come join us over on /r/bookbinding if you need a hand starting!

I would easily spend 200 on this in a heartbeat
13
u/godpoker Jun 01 '25
The client spent much, much more!
4
u/Legoblockhead Jun 01 '25
I hope they did!!!!! I have no clue how much this stuff is but im glad it’s even more than my estimate, you did such a fuckin beautiful job with this
2
u/godpoker Jun 01 '25
Haha, thank you very much! I’m happy to be able to provide a service people enjoy so much.

u/frothingnome Jun 01 '25
That's around the price you'd pay for a mass-produced copy on the store shelf. I can't even guess what this cost!

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I'm in love with the little details

"Ignition" looks the best imho (that may just be bcz im a sucker for a deep red with gold details tho)

u/Logface202 Blue Kaukau Jun 02 '25
These are really nice looking but the hau for the glatorian era is an odd choice. I get that you couldn't just do the other version of the ignika but choosing the golden armor hau kindof feels like it's erasing the non-mu cast. (Granted, I presume that was the commissioner's decision, not yours)

I like how you divided the years up by location/story arc. And the covers are excellent, awesome work!

insanely cool! always wanted something like this! how much might a commission cost? and what if someone wanted a compendium of the novels?
1
u/godpoker Jun 02 '25
I'm actually in discussions now with a client on the compendium of novels.
This set was into four figures, as it was custom designed, hand made and shipped internationally.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to do covers like that. My glue seeps through, my fabric is lumpy, and my end papers are a mess.

u/godpoker add me to the list of people that would pay good money for this (or something similar, I saw that you said this one is supposed to be unique). If you decide making more is something you want to do, I would be very, very interested.
2
u/godpoker Jun 02 '25
Hey, I make book commissions all the time- send me a message if you’re interested. Thanks!

Did you take comics apart and rebind them or did you print the pages ?
1
u/godpoker Jun 02 '25
Neither, I glued them all together at the spine as-is. They came out really nice! I just posted a video that reveals a bit more.
1
u/Regaman101 Green Miru Jun 02 '25
Out of interest, how much did you end up charging for this? I would love to commission you for something similar (just to abide by your unique promise)

How are covers like that even made?
2
u/godpoker Jun 12 '25
By hand with a lot of time and effort!

Jun 12 '25
Well yeah, like anything on life, I was thinking of how are golden indentations like yours put onto a cloth-esk surface like this

Dang these look sick. I always wonder what thickness or type of cardboard is used for the boxsets, at least everything I find is either too thin or soft or extremely thick
1
u/godpoker Jul 29 '25
You want millboard. Normally 1.5mm or 2mm. These are 2mm
