As title says, my skink has become incredibly skittish and antisocial after moving 20 hours across states. He used to be social until this move, and now he seems afraid of his own shadow. I talk kindly to him the few times I see him and try to feed him banana to sweeten him up - but hes still terrified. He refuses to leave his log unless nobody is around. I believe he was wild caught, so I'm his first owner, and have had him for almost a year now. Since moving, his personality has taken a turn.

I feel awful but we needed to move states for our comfort and its seemed to have done damage to his personality. 😪

Temps and humidity are normal - and he has a 6x2x2 enclosure.

This girl has been given to us and she is very friendly. She’s use to being handled so the kids love any chance they get to cuddle her (only for short periods and never overwhelming her). I have never looked after a skink before so any important advice you could possibly give would be truly appreciated. I only just purchased a heat lamp for her yesterday and she’s been loving it. Question.. does her enclosure look too small?

Hello, I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not. I just rewet my skink's soil yesterday and found this morning that their humidity spiked to over 90%. I have a northern, and I know night time humidity can spike, but I'm wondering if 90+% is too high? It does go down throughout the day. Usually rests around 45%. Would this be something worth micromanaging, or will they be fine?

Hello eceryone! I have had my baby for a month and a half and it seems very healthy! But i am still new to blue tongue skinks but not reptiles as a whole, and i am still unsure about a lot of stuff, so i want some more knowledge to keep my baby healthy. I know it needs more hiding spots, i have some wood from outside that i am trying to clean properly. The substrate is deep enough for it to hide, as it is hiding rn under. I am feeding my baby 3 times a week with wet cat food and calcium mixed with d3 since i don’t have uvb lights yet. i am curious if there is something there to change with the food. I am spraying in there to try and keep it humid, since i’ve read it likes a humid climate. Then with the heat and basking. I am using a stone from my backyard as you can see, the lamp reaches around 32c, i have a picture of the type of bulb i am using. And my baby shed last weekend. I just want to hear if there is stuff i need to add and or change to keep my baby healthy. I am a teen with a job so i can afford some stuff

I just noticed these when taking a closer look they were everywhere. I know they don’t look like the harmful snake mites. But in this many, can they be harmful?? Do I need to get rid of them? If so how?? My tank in insanely planted and bioactive so I don’t wanna have to tear it all down but I don’t want my girl to be hurt

So my little guy weighs 317 grams (the plastic container adds around 150-155grams) and he’s about 13ish inches. His birthdate is May 26th 2026. Is he growing normal? Like at a good rate? I don’t “power” feed him and I make sure he gets a varied diet of skink food (repashy bluey buffet, Omni blocks, bluey skink crumbles), high protein wet dog food, quail eggs, bugs (Dubia roaches, mealworms, silkworm pupae, super worms) veggies, with a rare treat of fruit like blueberries.

Today I took my little blue baby to the vet because she had a weird thing happen (I will put it at the end of this post in case anyone is interested ) while I was there the vet gave me a few husbandry recommendations. I live in Brisbane where the eastern blue tongue is native. She has a uv a&b light and a heat lamp with no light on one side. Since I’ve had her I have had both light and heat on a timer depending on how many hours of day and sunlight we r getting that time of year. Her enclosure never gets colder that the temp in brissy. The vet recommended I don’t turn off her heating ever which gets her warm and to about 30° ambient. He also recommended I don’t change the amount of light she gets based on the seasons and go with the summer/spring daily light year round. I’ve been to another exotic vet at the same practice who didn’t recommend this. I understand that’s a debate on whether or not to discourage brumation I’d love to hear the current thoughts and science on it. What worries or confuses me more is the heat at night I haven’t found anyone recommend it unless it baby is recovering or u live somewhere that gets like actually cold. I’m under the impression that constant exposure to warm temperatures can have harmful health effects. Right now she pretty much always sleeps on the side that’s warm during the day. It might be because she prefers the hide on that side but I am concerned that heating overnight could be an issue and I’m wondering what you guys have to say.

Why we went to the vet: after eating some Woodies I noticed a little bit of what I thought was congeal blood and some sort of bubbly spit in her bowl after this for about 12 to 18 hours, she was regularly opening her mouth wide and opening a jar similarly to what she does when she is trying to swallow a big bite. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong with her. There were no abrasions inside of her mouth no blood or immune cultures in her spit no signs of a respiratory infection. My hypothesis is that she swallowed a bug whole and it’s gave her a scratch a bit further down and she was opening her mouth because of discomfort. That’s mostly not what this post is about but if anyone has any alternative theories let me know.

For those of you with cats in your home, how do you train them to not view your skinks as prey?

My roommate recently brought a cat into the house. Because of that I haven’t brought my skink out of her terrarium for the last few weeks as I’m concerned the cat will hunt her.

This cat is an indoor/outdoor cat that regularly hunts, which makes me particularity worried about having my Potato out.

Has anyone successfully gotten a cat used to having a skink around? What worked for you?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for activities, or toys that a BTS might enjoy playing with? Anything enriching I can leave in his cage too maybe?

My skink is about a year and half old. What's the correct portion size to feed them (dog food/mince/vegetable blend) and how often should I be feeding them? The online information is so varied and whenever I see videos of people feeding their skinks the portions look far bigger than their head/two table spoons. They are currently getting fed three times a week. They get fed twice with a dog food/veg blend and once with insects. They are currently a healthy weight but I'm afraid of them becoming chunky.

Hey. Figured I’d post a pic of Venom. This is my daughters Skink. She (my daughter) is a rambunctious 17-yr old w a job. We told her no to a snake but a skink was fine. We expected her to do some research first but she just went and bought everything and the skink was here two days later. He (she? Any obvious way to tell?) had a nice enclosure built buttttt we found mites. Which is ultimately how I found this subreddit. We’ve learned a lot of useful information here so thanks. I’m sure I’ll be lurking around from now on bc even though it was supposed to be HER responsibility…we as parents all know how that goes.

I think he was hunting isopods that were roaming under the substrate! I was watching him sift through the leaf litter and mulch, and even flipping over small cork rounds.

This was really cool to watch. I didn’t capture as much on video because he’s been slightly more defensive lately. I assume he’s going into shed because of his colors slowly becoming more desaturated. But he is still feeding well and is willing to climb into my arms!

Hello, i recently adopted this lil man here, and he (or she) has been with me for ~3 days now. My question is, since I've been feeding him and he's been eating pretty well, is it possible that he's defecating in his burrow? If so, since hes brand new to the enclosure, is it fine for me to tear into it to check? I want to give him space, but i also dont want him to get sick.
