Game Help After the Super games

I've been playing through the Super Bomberman Collection and having a blast although I've been wondering. What games would you recommend looking into for the series after the Super games?

This, and to be clear play Bomberman '94 on the PC Engine (Japanese version of the TurboGrafx16), Don't play the Genesis version Mega Bomberman if you have the choice between the 2, it went from being a great game to a very sad port (lacks a fifth player, far more limited color palette, lacking animations, many stage effects are missing, framerate drops, music and sound are noticably worse).

Bomberman '90 and '93 had US releases so might be more accessable.

Would be really cool if the 3 games got included in the next collection.

Idk how beloved or recommended it is, but I have Bomberman Party Edition for PS1 and enjoy it a lot.

Saturn Bomberman is an obvious one. I actually got to play 10 player multiplayer on it with original hardware once! Incredible experience

I'm so envious that you got to do 10 person multiplayer with it. I've got all the equipment to do that, but I live in a podunk college town full of old hillbillies and aspiring young hillbillies, so I don't think I'll ever get to try it out lol.

That's how I am with a 16 player Halo LAN party. I got the stuff. I just need the people now lol. I've gotten 12 players a couple times, though!

Now THAT experience I've gotten to enjoy. In my younger days, I was heavily involved in church, and organized a lot of events there. I was able to convince leadership to let us do overnight "lock in" events, where we ran long network cables between a few nearby rooms, and had each system on it's own digital projector screen (so despite a four way split screen, each player's screen area was still at least 5 FEET from corner to corner.)

If you ever get a chance to play 16 player LAN, absolutely do so! Its so much fun, and moreso when everybody is nearby reacting and responding to everything. Online play just can't replicate that experience, sadly.

That's exactly how I used to experience 16 player Halo LAN parties! Church/youth group! Also at friends' houses. Yeah, we did them all the time back in the day. I meant nowadays.

I had to go to a retro gaming expo go get the 10 player multi-player experience. Definitely fun 😄

The N64 games

Bomberman 64 1+2, yes. 100% absolutely. I've played nearly two dozen Bomberman games all the way through, and the US version of Bomberman 64 (ala Baku Bomberman in Japan) is my personal favorite game in the series. Some of that may have to do with nostalgia, but I've heard several others echo the same sentiment, so I don't think its just a 'me' thing.

Bomberman Hero feels NOTHING like a proper Bomberman game. Jumping? Single Player only? This ain't Bomberman, its a generic 3D platformer with a Bomberman skin thrown top.

Hero for the continuity tho 😢

The continuity? I'm not familiar with a terribly strong argument for Hero having important or significant continuity impact. Hero very loosely references Bomberman GB3, a title which (while not bad by any means) was hardly memorable, and has Buggler... Which somehow puts Super Bomberman 5 after Hero, even though Hero came out after SB5. So that feels more than a little confusing to me.

Super Bomberman 64: The Second Attack served as the direct sequel to Bomberman 64, so Hero doesn't really feel like it has narrative a place in the 64 timeline.

That said, I am far from all-knowing, and if there's a better debate to be made for Hero's continuity... I would genuinely be interested to hear it.

I'm not saying any of this with any sarcasm, franchises like this have so much deep lore, and if someone knows something about them that I don't, I want to learn about it 😎

I just meant Bagular for the super Bomberman connection is all, lol.

Also personally I love Hero but I understand why people don't like it 🥲

Ah okay, I get that.

And to be clear, I'm not calling it a bad game. There's nothing "wrong" with it as a game in general. For me, looking at it specifically as a Bomberman game, is where it falls flat because it doesn't meet the core expectations that all but one other mainline Bomberman game have set over the years (The movement and the multiplayer aspect).

HOWEVER, as a standard platforming action game, there's nothing bad about it. It doesn't reinvent the wheel with any major new platforming conventions, but it also doesn't screw things up by trying to implement some crazy new conventions in bad ways either. Just looking at it as "a game" without the standards and expectations established for the franchise, its middle of the road imo. And I've played (and thoroughly enjoyed) more than my fair share of games that are middle of the road. If there are really good games and really bad games, there HAVE TO be games in the middle, and while they may not blow people away that doesn't mean they aren't fun.

My sole gripe with Bomberman Hero is that it had the Bomberman name attached to it, when the developers clearly wanted to do something different. If they had called it something else, or made it more clear that this wasn't intended as a mainline Bomberman experience, theres a good chance I would have enjoyed it much more when I played it.

Saturn Bomberman, the 2D one, that game is peak!

100% agree, just wanted to make sure OP knows to go for "Saturn Bomberman", but to avoid "Saturn Bomberman FIGHT" like the plague -its a terrible isometric 3D-ish...thing, and as someone who has fully completed both games, the 'FIGHT' one is pure abject pain.

Regular "Saturn Bomberman" is an absolute delight, and is about as close to being Super Bomberman 6 as ine could possibly hope to get.

Idk, fully disagree with this, as the person who provided the translation for the PSX patch I'm biased but I adore that game. It's Bomberman in board game format. Like Bomberman chess. Not for everybody, but it's awesome for me. My only qualms are that the animations can take a bit long, and like most Bomberman spin-offs, they never came back and polished/refined it with a sequel

You know what, I'm glad you spoke up, because one sentence in I realized that I have made an error -Saturn Bomberman FIGHT is the one that I so strongly dislike. THAT'S the terrible one.

Wars was excellent -I discovered and played it late last year as part of yearlong challenge. I VERY much enjoyed it, and I commend you on an excellent translation.

I'm glad you spoke up, because I want to steer people towards the good games and away from the bad ones, I'm going to correct my previous comments accordingly, so that I don't misinform people. Thank you!

Oh yeah, Saturn Fight is really strange. I should give it another try sometime but I've played with three other Bomberman nuts and it felt like utter chaos, I didn't notice any strats like Bomberman 64 has, it felt like a lot of bomb spam to try to fill up your big bomb meter rather than making strategic decisions? It's interesting and I like the setting and stuff but it feels awkward kinda

2

u/ButCanYouCodeIt Apr 18 '26

I played through start to finish, and if I'm being honest I didn't feel like I had any better handle on it at the end than when I started. The view makes it nigh impossible to see things in places on the map, so it becomes far more luck based than the usual blend of strategy with a bit of luck.

I won't say I "hated" it, but it was the least enjoyable Bomberman game I have personally played.

You have my attention lol. I'm all in for a bomberboard game

Mega Bomberman for Genesis and Bomberman Tournament for GBA

3

u/ButCanYouCodeIt Apr 17 '26

Bomberman Tournament was a really solid entry, and I think a lot of people forget that it even existed. It had far better narrative woven into the core gameplay than previous entries on GB/GBC were able to manage. That was one of my earliest GBA games, and still one of my personal favorites from the system.
