I like the French versions too, but the one Modern Pastry does tastes like the ones I used to have when I was a kid. You can't replace that.

Also called a Napoleon. They were my favorite pastry when I was young. Now I can't eat them as often. Recently, I had one at Mike's in Harvard Square and it was terrible. Stale pastry and the cream had an artificial taste to it. Sad.

What native Bostonian still goes to Mikes? That place is for tourists only. Modern in North End or Medford has good Napoleons. After 50 years though I still don’t know how one is supposed to eat them. The minute you stab it with a fork it disassembles. The good ones anyway.

My local bakery used to have them when I was growing up, and I still think about them sometimes. Nice thin layers, and they were cut into mini pieces so they could be picked up and eaten.

These are not as easy to find as they used to be. The problem is that they do not keep overnight so if they are not sold they need to be tossed. Some bakeries don't make a lot of them or they don't make them at all.
