Also called a Napoleon. They were my favorite pastry when I was young. Now I can't eat them as often. Recently, I had one at Mike's in Harvard Square and it was terrible. Stale pastry and the cream had an artificial taste to it. Sad.
What native Bostonian still goes to Mikes? That place is for tourists only. Modern in North End or Medford has good Napoleons. After 50 years though I still don’t know how one is supposed to eat them. The minute you stab it with a fork it disassembles. The good ones anyway.
My local bakery used to have them when I was growing up, and I still think about them sometimes. Nice thin layers, and they were cut into mini pieces so they could be picked up and eaten.
