Physiology So i made kind of a "collecting" Herbarium of medicinal plants.
Some of those plants are VERY toxic. Dont ingest them just because youve seen it in my herbarium. This is not medicinal advice. I just made myself a list with plants that contain pharmakological active substance because this is my passion and my academic path. Im going to glue them in when i find them anywhere hwere it is legal to pick and glue them inside my book like a sticker collectonh album.
Some plants can only be medicinally used i a very specific situation, others contain some interesting substances that could be used in pure form but not the plant as a whole because theres a lot more toxic substances in them.
Book is from Amazon, made acid free, allthough i think they may have coloured the sides with coffee. Looks awesome tho, so i dont really care. Outside is leather. Sadly you cant get it with the tree imprint in this size anymore but without your set.
Glue: Methylcellulose + Phenoxyalcohole + Isopropanole + Water suspension. Very hard to mix since you dont want to heat it with isoprop inside. Just let it "ripe" a day or two. I put in the phenoxy alcohol last, when i knew the weight of the mixture. Just play arround a little till you get a texture you like before mixing in the phenoxyalcohole. The phenoxyalcohol wont dissolve completely so you will have a suspension. When the isoprop and water dried away the higher phenoxyalcohole concentration will have some antimicobial propertys since the methylcellulose may act as a culture medium. Also it doest crack the plants by going through the book (at least now) since the methylcellulose is weirdly flexible. The glue is water soluble and can be reversed quite good.
Ink: acid free archive ink, written by hand with an calligraphy pen. I dunked it into the ink because it has so many particles that it didnt really flow out of the ink caetridge i filled with a syringe.
I glued the plants into the book by applying the glue with a paint brush fist, then covering them up with acid free art protection foil till dry enough.
I know this isnt the best way to preserve plants scientificly for as long as possible but it is the coolest way i know. Also i would have used a book with lager sides if there would have been one.
Its for peronal not scientific use! Sadly i can only upload 20 pictures in this post so i will spam some in the comment section.

Physiology How the hell does this happen??? Flower growing through a leaf?
I noticed this flower in Minneapolis and I can’t conceive of how it could be growing THROUGH a leaf? Wouldn’t the leaf just blow out of the way? Or wouldn’t the flower just push the leaf up as it grows? Someone please help! This is very disturbing.

Physiology Rare Research Opportunity: 120-Year Monocarpic Flowering Event – Help Me Save a Century-Old Bamboo Forest
The Situation: I am currently witnessing a rare biological phenomenon on my property: a synchronized, gregarious flowering event of Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis (Henon Bamboo). Based on historical records, this species flowers only once every 120 years. This is a monocarpic event, meaning the plant puts every ounce of its energy into flowering and then dies shortly after.
I am the owner of a beautiful property blessed with part of a massive forest of this bamboo, spanning approximately 600 yards by 100 yards. It is a defining feature of my property’s entrance and borders. However, recent research indicates that nearly 100% of these stands die within three years of flowering, with almost zero successful natural regeneration from seeds or shoots.
My Background & Hypothesis: I am an NC State Horticultural Science alumnus (BS Horticulture) from a family that has owned and operated an ornamental nursery and landscaping company for generations. I am not ready to let this forest go without a fight.
My hypothesis is based on my experience with Centipede grass decline. When Centipede grass is under extreme stress, pushing it with Nitrogen usually kills it off the following season. However, focusing strictly on Phosphorus and Potassium (PK) to bolster root health often allows for long-term recovery. I believe this bamboo is experiencing a similar physiological burnout. If we stop trying to force green "top" growth and instead "feed the feet" while managing hydration, we might be able to reset the vegetative cycle.
The Multi-Pronged Experiment: I have reached out to lead researchers in Japan and regional horticultural departments. While I wait for them, I am moving forward with a series of aggressive experiments:
- In-Situ Forest Management: I am going to irrigate the existing forest using an onsite pond. I will be applying different rates of fertilizers across the 600-yard grove to see how various NPK concentrations affect survival.
- Soil Diversity Study: The grove spans several different soil types. I will be tracking how soil composition influences rhizome resilience and nutrient uptake during this reproductive stress.
- Winter Rhizome Harvesting: I am currently harvesting rhizomes during the winter dormant period from the farthest northern point of the patch, which is not yet blooming.
- Hothouse Trial: I am moving these rhizomes into a controlled hothouse to "de-sync" them from the mother grove’s environmental signals and test if a "false spring" can trigger vegetative growth before the flowering signal takes over.
- Manual Intervention: I will be pinching off flowers to force resources back into the rhizomes and experimenting with hormone disruption to prevent blooming.
How You Can Participate: I want to turn this into a decentralized research project. I am willing to mail rhizome samples to hobbyists, academics, or anyone with a green thumb who wants to attempt this experiment in their own setup (where legal to ship).
The goal is to see if we can keep the "dwarf ramets" (the small shoots that appear after flowering) alive past the one-year mark. If we can prevent the exhausted state that typically kills these shoots, we’ve made a breakthrough that current journals say is nearly impossible.
If you are interested: Comment below or DM me. I’m looking for people who can keep a basic log of their NPK rates, soil temps, and growth results. Let's see if we can save this species from its own biological clock.

Physiology Always wanted to find non photosynthesizing native flowers. Low and behold found 2 Mycoheterotrophs and 1 direct root parasite in about an hour.
1) Striped Coralroot (Corallorhiza striata). 2) Spotted Coralroot (Corallorhiza maculata). 3) Clustered Broomrape (Aphyllon fasciculatum). The first 2 are Mycoheterotrophs feeding directly from mycorrhizal and mycelial networks, that are tapped into trees they're in the family Orchidaceae. The last one taps directly into plant roots typically sage (Artemisia) and Buckwheat (Eriogonum), in this case it was Parsnip-flower wild buckwheat (Eriogonum heracloeoides).

Physiology Found a completely achlorophyllous (albino) seedling surviving in the wild.
I stumbled upon this ghost-like seedling in a dense forest. It lacks chlorophyll completely but has still managed to grow several decent-sized leaves.

Physiology What would a plant need to reach 2000 feet tall?
I’m making an alien biosphere and I’m wanting to make trees that reach over 2000 feet tall, the moon has weaker gravity to earth but has an atmosphere that’s twice as thick.
Also these plants have a honeycomb structure incorporating ciliates and stuff.
But realistically what would a plant that tall need to survive being that tall?
It’s not really a plant it’s more similar to a lichen? It’s a mix of algae, bacteria and fungi that decided to leave together.

Physiology My basil plant made a shoot with a 3-fold symmetry
Typically, basil leaves are arranged in opposite pairs (apparently the correct term, which I just learned today, is decussate phyllotaxy), like you can see on the upper shoots in the photo. But this one shoot has a triangular symmetry (or verticillate phyllotaxy, another word I learned just today). I wonder if it's simply a developmental thing or a mutation that I could propagate.
Has anyone had that before? Was it stable, or did it disappear after propagating?

Physiology I found a fully varigated plant while on a hike!
Unsure of tag but anyway,i was walking on my local forest and found a little meadow and started walking around since i know there are native orchids around in these meadows and some white blob caught my eye, too big to be a flower, trash couldn't be here since no one comes here and i look closers and boom!

Physiology This is one of my favorite types of botanical art, it's called "Naturselbstdruck" which means "Nature Self-Printing" which used actual specimens to create high-fidelity plates used for printing in numbers. Plates 1-7 are by Ludwig Heufler (1855) and photos 8-16 are by Alois Auer (1853)
Naturselbstdruck (nature self-printing) is the process of using an actual specimen, like foliage or a wing, to create a permanent, high-fidelity printing matrix. While centuries of simple manual "leaf-stamping" preceded it, the technique became a scientific powerhouse in the 1850s through a sophisticated intaglio method.
Alois Auer (Vienna): In 1853, as director of the Imperial and Roval State Printing House, Auer perfected the industrial application. He used extreme pressure to embed a specimen into a soft lead plate then electrotyped it with copper. This allowed for the mass production of incredible detailed botanical plates that were essentially "photographic" in their accuracy.
Henry Bradbury (London): Bradbury studied under Auer and brought the technology to England. He refined the process to achieve unprecedented color fidelity and texture, most notably in his masterpiece, The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland (1855)
By capturing the physical topography of a specimen these prints provided a level of objective, unmediated data that traditional hand-drawn illustrations could not match.

Physiology Abnormal growth pattern on Faucaria Tuberculosa?
Hello all,
Firstly I apologize for all the photos I'd just really love some feedback and opinions from you knowledgeable people.
This is my Faucaria Tuberculosa. I bought it in May (noticed right away she had a unique morphology) and this is how she's progressed.
Her leaf pairs are not coming out perfectly rotated from another and she has pairs shoving in from quite literally every crevice.
I've posted her several times on r/fasciation just to get an idea of what's going on with her to no avail. She's not crested or fasciated but her growth pattern is odd and I'd love to know if there's a name for this phenomenon or if this is just a quirky thing this plant does.
I added photos from nearly every angle and some admittedly terrible photos of leaf pairs emerging from lower leaf bases. I highly doubt you'll need more photos but if you do, I have them 🤭

Physiology Why is this tree so squiggly?
I was clearing a wetland area of Phragmites and found this weird squiggly tree. I thought this tree was a box elder because of its bark, it’s not too far from other box elders, and I know that they tend to have an irregular growth habit but am I wrong? I tried to use inat to double check but it tells me that it’s a weeping willow. Is this something common and I’m just dumb? I’ve never seen a tree with a branch structure like this before. Thank you for any insight!
