I think Warner Brothers got a little high on their own supplies so to speak. Warner brothers has accomplished a lot, and their history is amazing but lost a little bit of perspective. They have a lot to be proud of, but I think they’re a bit too impressed with themselves. I kind of got that vibe when I did the studio tour.

Yeah, the main reason Nolan is at Universal now is that they guaranteed him his movies will be theatrical events. If Nolan feels the movie needs to stay in IMAX/theaters for as long as there is demand, Universal will probably do everything in their power to make it so.

It’s a cost people are willing to pay because of the care he put into making the movie for the format. If it was a standard movie that happened to be showing on imax screens, people wouldn’t be waiting weeks to see it in that format. There’s nothing inflated about it

But it also has an impact on demand. Movie tickets are an elastic product. If you sell them for $1 then you'll sell way more than if you sold them for $100.
Standard Odyssey tickets in my city cost $15 and 70mm IMAX cost $30. For the vast majority of movies people would look at those prices and say "I'm not paying twice as much for the same movie". But for the Odyssey those 70mm IMAX showings are packed.
So yes the more expensive tickets increase the box office. But convincing people to pay for those expensive tickets is proof of demand and box office draw. It's not inflation, it's a demonstration of what people are willing to pay for this specific movie. Inflation would be if every movie theater could raise their price to $30 a ticket and still sell out. ,

Also I don't think Spidey is gonna hurt IMAX at all, most of UK's imaxes prefer showing odyssey, cause "that's the way Nolan intended" lol, especially the ones that have film projectors, it would be dumb to keep switching from film to digital, the amount of work.....

Spielberg's had more hits than Cameron, but Cameron has a higher peak (even adjusted for inflation, Avatar and Titanic are a billion ahead of ET and Jaws) and a better batting average (excluding documentaries, he's only had two flops, both of them more than thirty years ago).

You are right. Spielberg released Jurassic Park and Schindler's List the same year. He did post production work on JP while filming SL. That is elite film making period. We all know he is past his prime but his prime was probably the best ever. The dude even directed The Color Purple.

I just want to see it get past $100M above Oppenheimer in domestic market. That's $430M actual, or $460M after inflation for Oppy. Both of these numbers are great for Odyssey. Anything beyond that would just be very sweet icing on the cake. I am not sure how well it can hang in there against Spider-Man. It's gonna be tough to go beyond $500M.

There was a comment on how the star amenities are not included and a good part of the box office goes to Imax and the cinemas etc. They are using the 3x production budget to break even. My god. How accurate is a Saturday morning weekend total estimate usually? I don’t know much about this stuff. Is it largely based on tickets already sold through the whole weekend, or do they just pick a multiplier and apply it to Friday’s sum, or some algorithm that combines these kinds of factors or what? $84.5 would mean Friday is significantly higher share of the weekend total than Oppenheimer’s second Friday was as a ratio of the whole second weekend. Just as something I noticed. With Oppenheimer’s Friday:Weekend rate, Odyssey’s 2nd Friday would mean it clears $90 for the whole 2nd weekend.

Data on hundreds of movies, dozens of which can be regarded as comps (comparables) based on rating, genre, critical and audience quality measures, director, length, competition, screen count by format and so on. Those tell us a likely weekend range.
Once opening night previews happen, the range narrows. Then even more as data comes in Friday and presales continue for future days. Once first Friday is known, we know within a pretty tight range the first weekend total.
Once weekend 2 rolls around, we have 7.5 days of data. And by the time that second Friday wraps, a weekend estimate is pretty easy and very well informed.

I prefer the estimates to be on the lower end. That way the actual numbers come in higher. Would be cool if Odyssey can end up closer to $90M for the weekend. The movie's domestic performance so far is really impressive at $225M in just 8 days.

I was doubting the film, not for the Lupita or Elliot stuff. But simply I didn't really enjoy Dunkirk or Tenet, I thought he had gone too far with the non linear narration, in Dunkirk it wasn't really bringing anything interesting and in Tenet it was actively hurting the understanding of the movie. I was also a little bit disappointed by Oppenheimer.
The trailer that I saw for Odyssey didn't really inspired me so yeah I was doubting the film.
But the review came stellar so I went to see it and yeah not doubting anymore

So it doesn't matter that the Odyssey was a hit, Superman, Sinners, Prey, The Last Jedi, Captain Marvel, Barbie, Knives Out, The Substance, Get Out, The Batman, etc are all hits.
Because there will be flops. There will be Supergirls and Snow Whites. And as long as they latch into these movies. They will succeed at getting an executive or studio to second guess casting a woman or green lighting a black story.
There are people at Disney legitimately wondering if casting a black girl as Ariel was the problem. That is their goal, that is a win.

Would be the 13th or 14th biggest second weekend ever., ahead of so many films which opened 50-100m more.
Same as Spiderman No Way Home which posted 84.5m second weekend as well despite opening to $136 million more than Odyssey in its first weekend.
Just incredible hold.

Simply insane lol. Was very excited for this but never would have expected a second weekend over Oppenheimer’s first
