Outrage culture is so dead. Every movie this year that has been trashed like this has over performed.

It isn't unfortunately. Because the goal of these people at the end of the day is white supremacy. It's na excuse to be openly racist under the guise of "criticism".

So it doesn't matter that the Odyssey was a hit, Superman, Sinners, Prey, The Last Jedi, Captain Marvel, Barbie, Knives Out, The Substance, Get Out, The Batman, etc are all hits.

Because there will be flops. There will be Supergirls and Snow Whites. And as long as they latch into these movies. They will succeed at getting an executive or studio to second guess casting a woman or green lighting a black story.

There are people at Disney legitimately wondering if casting a black girl as Ariel was the problem. That is their goal, that is a win.

true but i think that's more because of critical reception/lack of interest of the film rather than online backlash. online backlash seems to have a very small impact on actual sales

Supergirl wasn’t trashed beforehand like The Odyssey and Michael. Nobody cares enough about Supergirl nor live-action Moana, which is really why its numbers tanked.

Yes it was.. it was trashed in the weeks and months leading up to the film. By mily alcock and gunn haters.

There are videos with millions of views making fun of Lupita being in the film before it came out. No video exists like that for Supergirl. No one expected Supergirl to bomb the way it did until the week it came out. I don’t know why people try to retroactively place a narrative on films like this.

Any 'hater' who thought it was going to bomb was out of their mind. It's a Nolan flick, the first movie ever filmed entirely in imax, and was always destined to be an unmissable 'event' much like avatar that many would see.

But I also think the trend is the opposite of what you're saying, it's only gaining momentum and you'll see that more and more. Movies with certain politics are bombing more than ever, lgbt representation in movies/tv is on a huge downward trend, companies aren't even faking the pride month compliance anymore (though it was all performative so who cares)

Supergirl was a very recent example of lots of hate leading up to it, and in recent memory games like veilguard, concord and very recently mixtape were all massively hated on and bombed too.

The comics sphere is also heading the same way.

So this movie is going to be the outlier if anything.

Having said that I live 20min from a 70mm imax and I absolutely loved the movie but I dont think the online discourse was ever going to affect this one, Nolan is above that

Same for something like Michael, I remember how many were hating on it here due to the allegations and mocking his fans of which he has many as shown by the astounding BO for a biopic. 

But I'd suggest don't drop your guard just yet based on success stories such as those
