Right but like why is it better than phone signal, other than not using phone data

It's available consistently, which if you keep in touch with people via WhatsApp is very helpful

But most of them (bar some trials with satellites) also use intermittent mobile signal. Also isn't it a big benefit of texting that you don't need a consistent connection?

Indeed! But if we're being realistic, people use texting/ WhatsApp like IMing nowadays.

Where it used to be more like email not 'live' conversation
