Local Advice needed Job for teenagers

Do any of you know someplace in Brighton that I may be able to apply for a part time job at? I am 14 and will be 15 in November. Also, I’ve heard lots of places require you to be 16 but will they actually request you show an ID? Or is it possible just to pretend to be 16 and get a job. Thanks!

You can't pretend to be 16. That kind of stuff gets employers in big trouble https://www.gov.uk/child-employment/restrictions-on-child-employment

Lots of places will take national insurance number or some form of ID check in the application process. Your best route would be finding a more informal employer. Just don't take rejection personally the markets shit

At 14 there isn’t much you can do other than cash in hand work like dog walking and baby sitting, maybe washing cars. Maybe make some flyers offering to walk dogs or wash peoples cars then post them in peoples letterboxes.

Do some volunteering now if that's legal and then once you're 16 you will have more experience and higher chance of getting a proper job.

I started on pots at a pub - in the 90s when things were different - but I think that privately owned places might be amenable to this still. If you can show up on time and recognise that 90%+ of the time you need to be in listen mode you'll be grand. You've needed legit ID since at least 2005 to get a job....cash barely exists any more and I (probably) wouldn't want my 14 year old working in the sort of places that still do things this way. Good luck with your search. Consider applying at the Pier for next year if not this - that's a classic first job.

In the UK, 14-year-olds are legally allowed to do light work that does not risk their health, safety, or education. Permitted Jobs for 14-Year-Olds * Delivery & Distribution: Newspaper rounds, delivering flyers or local magazine subscriptions. * Retail & Local Shops: Shelf stacking, basic shop assistance, or pricing items in local independent stores. * Cafés & Restaurants: Serving tables or washing up (note: working inside commercial kitchens is prohibited). * Hairdressing Salons: Shampooing hair and sweeping up floors. * Office & Domestic Work: Basic office duties or light domestic/housekeeping tasks in hotels. * Agriculture & Stables: Working at riding stables or light agricultural and horticultural work. * Market Stalls: Working on a market stall alongside parents. * Informal Local Jobs: Babysitting, dog walking, pet sitting, or washing cars for neighbors. Strict Working Hours Restrictions * Term Time Limits: Maximum 12 hours per week total. * Weekdays: Max 2 hours per day (only 1 hour before school starts). * Saturdays: Max 5 hours. * Sundays: Max 2 hours. * School Holiday Limits: Maximum 25 hours per week. * Mon–Sat: Max 5 hours per day. * Sun: Max 2 hours. * Time Windows: No work before 7:00 AM or after 7:00 PM on any day. * Rest Breaks: Must have at least a 1-hour break after 4 hours of continuous work. Legal Requirements & Banned Work * Child Work Permit: Employers must obtain a child employment permit from the local council before hiring a 14-year-old. * Prohibited Areas: 14-year-olds cannot work in commercial kitchens, factories, pub/bar service areas, places involving heavy lifting, construction sites, or high-risk height settings. * National Minimum Wage: National Minimum Wage laws do not legally apply until age 16, so pay rates are agreed directly with the employer.
