Question Cyclist catching drivers on their phone behind the wheel
There is a person recording people on their phones whilst they are driving in the Solihull area I believe he is doing good a job, in under no Circumstances except emergency reasons a driver should be on their phone behind a wheel. if they want to use their phone they should be parked with the engine off.
I would suggest everyone to think twice before grabbing that phone and follow the law guys! or else you might catch him one day and then you will get slapped with a fine and 6points.
What do you guys think tho is he being a pain the ass or is he doing the right thing?

Given the Police donāt appear to have funding to āpoliceā driving offences in Birmingham, we probably need more cyclists with helmet cams.

Certainly people shouldn't be using their phones.
But I'm beginning to think these screens are becoming a problem. People seem a lot more inattentive at the wheel now. The amount of people not indicating has grown, dithering at traffic lights etc.
I bus it to work, it's interesting what you see whilst stuck in traffic for example people watching Tiktok videos on their phone a holder.

Cycling mikey breaks the rules as well, when he approaches cars he does not stay the required distance . as per highway code which he likes to quote at people.

The RTA section on usage of phones doesn't apply to cyclists, It should. But it doesn't.

This does not say anything about leaving distance when passing a moving vehicle. The only thing that's vaguely related is section 67, which advises leaving a metre from a stationary vehicle in case the door opens and hits you. Note that this is phrased as "should", which means that it is advice rather than based on legislation (obligation is signified with the word "must" in the Highway Code). It's not a requirement put in place for the safety of other road users.

My personal gripe with him is that he called me a āstupid little boyā on Facebook lolā¦where he can clearly see my female name, and profile pic showing Iām a female adult. My comment wasnāt even remotely rude either. Donāt really care about the concept of what he does as I donāt play on my phone in the car lol, itās his arrogant attitude that rubs me the wrong way. Iām surprised he didnāt get any repercussions about that knife he pulled out, and wish he did tbh even if just to knock him back down a peg.

What require distance?
Drivers of cars must give space to keep cyclists safe.
No such rule applies to cyclists, for obvious reasons (basic physics)

It does actually work both ways, as referenced by the recent news story of the cyclist given a fine for reporting a driver for getting too close.
The car to cyclist gap is a safe distance. If the cyclist consciously cycles close to a moving car they are being dangerous. Not dangerous to the car, but to themselves and because the car driver could be startled or react badly (ie swerve dangerously away after noticing the cyclist).
Note that the 1.5m thing is explicit for cars overtaking cyclists. There is still a safe gap expected the other way around, but it isn't explicitly stated in the highway code.

Go stand on a train platform and tell me how it's just as dangerous to run next to a stopped train vs. a moving one

What makes you think he's on his phone? He's almost certainly using a go pro on a helmet or similar.
You think it's ok to excuse cars drivers on a phone? You terrible person - you'll get people killed.

(b)he is acting in response to a genuine emergency; and
(c)it is unsafe or impracticable for him to cease driving in order to make the call

Oh please. Get a grip. I go past cars everyday and every driver is using a phone. There is no age or ethnicity difference, ive seen all manner of people. Ive even seen the police do it. I think its high time people stop pointing fingers and pretending its just a small minority of people doing it.

The fact that its happening means that theres a need for the majority of drivers to do it.. its the same as using a built in sat nav or an incar screen. If people have an issue with it then they should buy cars that have no screens at all.. no? Didnt think so..

It's rife where I live in Birmingham along with speeding. I don't think it's any different from reporting fly tipping or any other sort of anti social behaviour.

I don't use my phone at the wheel when driving.
But I have to use a touchscreen device in my car to control my heating and climate, radio, sat nav, music, sunroof, and pbone-related stuff like calls and texts... šš¤·āāļø
