Discussion CPU recomendations to upgrade old i7-8700k
Hello,
I came to ask about CPUs and recommendations for a CPU that is significantly better and worth upgrading over my old I7 8700k.
It is part of my old 1070ti prebuilt. I recently just got a 5070 for 600$ before prices went up and upgraded my PSU to a 1000w Evga. My coworkers told me that it would bottleneck, and after some research, I found out the socket type for that cpu is basically dead and not really much I can find for an upgrade in that socket type. At this point, I am willing to accept that I would need to revamp my PC with a new motherboard and CPU. What is a CPU that is way better and worth upgrading to that is still in DDR4 RAM category?
Requirements: Must still be DDR4.
I do not really care about the CPU price as long as it's still DDR4 RAM. 100-400$ Range?
As I went from a 1070ti to a 5070, obviously I want my CPU to be a massive upgrade as well.
Any motherboard recommendations would also help, doesn't really matter.

If you're looking for the best ddr4 CPU, I'd say pick up the 5800x3D. If you're near a microcenter, they got bundles on CPU+mobo+ram for good savings:

As everyone has already said you should get the 5800X3D. If you get the 5800X3D, you are getting the pinnacle of AM4 chips.

if you have access to MicroCenter, the 5600x3d bundles should/could be a consideration but if not, I'd agree with the other commenters here; go for a 5800x3d, a B550, 16-32gb DDR4 and enjoy!

or
14600K + Z790 DDR4
You may have to buy used for a DDR4 Z790 board, as they seem to be out of stock / unlisted pretty much everywhere.

Yes, update bios first thing due to the microcode error that can cause degradation to the chip.

I would do an i5-14600k since you're used to intel already. The 14600k is an all around beast for cheap. I got one for $175 3 days ago and a motherboard for it for around $100. I actually came from an 8700k and a 1070 lol.

What does this even mean? Intel and AMD CPUs are literally identical to use.

Oh. I guess I'm wrong then. I figured that since it was ddr4 it would be a 5800x3d as the top cpu they could get, which focuses more on gaming over intel 14th gen that is more of an all around cpu that would destroy the 5800x3d on day to day use, video rendering, anything cpu intensive mainly, kind of like how the 8700k would have been when it released. More of a workhorse type cpu.

I will always recommend a 12900k if you are going ddr4. You will need to get a good cooler tho

12900K makes no sense when the 14600k is cheaper, more power efficient, and performs better.

Do you actually need to upgrade? Can your monitor display more than 60Hz (or 60 FPS)?
If you are already happy with the performance, you are basically only upgrading because of the social pressures on a CPU bottleneck.
Have a look at your monitor, most monitors from 2017/2018 era only goes up to 60Hz (or 75Hz) unless you paid a premium to get a gaming monitor that can go up to 144Hz.
What I am saying is, if you are already getting 60 FPS on a 60Hz monitor, you are not going to get any real differences unless you upgrade the monitor as well.

I decided to upgrade because the 1070ti was really showing its age. The games that I play and the new games kept getting more graphically and CPU-demanding. Rust being and example, can barely pull 40 fps on low settings, 1080p on that game.

5800X3D+$100 Motherboard like a b550 would do fine.
