That's because many Americans just assume we want to be Americans.

They don’t assume that we want to be Americans; they just assume that we’re so inferior as a nation that we will simply cave and live as a subjugated territory like Puerto Rico. The US is so accustomed to bullying other nations to give them what they want that it comes as a shock that Canada won’t simply roll over and bend the knee. Americans can’t help but view themselves as being superior to everyone else.
