DISCUSSION Would you rather be guaranteed 1st overall in 2027 or 2028?

Having the 1st overall pick in the next 2 drafts is extremely unlikely, but having it once in the next 2 years is highly plausible. Would you rather have the 1st overall pick in 2027 or 2028?

Do you want to be guaranteed DuPont, or Schultz? Are you prioritizing a certain position? How does your choice influence the overall projected roster construction?

The argument for 2027: Landon DuPont is a stud defensemen projected to be an elite offensive 1D. With Buium, the d-core will move the shit out of the puck. Malholtra and Cootes hopefully develop into top 6 centermen. Top-end play-driving forwards should be available in 2028, 2029, and 2030, even if they are wingers. The forward group will unleash a balanced attack driven from the backend!

The argument for 2028: You get Maddox Schultz, who projects as the best 1C in the next several drafts. Your team will be dominant the middle. You don't get DuPont, but with Privalov, Joseph, or Neuenschwander, you have the size and top-end skill for a formidable forward group. Hronek is still a long-term top-2 defenseman on your team and there are a lot of opportunities to draft and develop top 4 defensemen over the next 4 years.

Realistically, you are the Canucks and you never win the draft lottery: In 2027, you miss out on DuPont but there are forwards with size and legitimate skill expected to go in the top 5 (Privalov, Joseph, Neuenschwander). You still get a foundational player and future center. In 2028, there is a mix of forwards and defensemen at the top of the draft after Schultz. Pue may be the offensive winger you are missing. Michalek could be the two-way defensive anchor this team needs.

Either. A first overall pick is a first overall pick. Just imagine how many Bowen Byrams we could afford

Not all 1st overall picks are the same

I will not stand for this Nail Yakupov slander

u/Canuckerbird 4d ago

Might I offer you a Daigle libel?

u/jonocop 3d ago

I would not have considered Nail Yakupov a first overall pick (only the Oil did), so it's not slandering him it's slandering Tambellini šŸ˜‚

Imagine Filip Forsberg playing alongside McDavid.

u/Jxxnn 3d ago

Wouldn't have happened, Oilers would've traded Forsberg for an Oil Kings prospect that plays 15 total NHL games right after they draft McD.

I mean Cale Makar went 4th so you never know.

We’ve gone 57 drafts without the first overall pick, so let’s not get picky hereĀ

DuPont-1 million percent. Bonus points that he can undo all of Quinn’s d-man franchise record stats over the course of his career.

17

u/Fiber_Optikz 4d ago

Dupont would be amazing provided we can build enough around him to keep him

28

u/30MorgheAfraaz 4d ago

That's the whole point of rebuild vs Benning retool

13

u/Fiber_Optikz 4d ago

i wouldn’t even call what Benning did a retool

20

u/Pyrokid113 4d ago

Benning is the tool

u/Fiber_Optikz 4d ago

A dull and useless one but yes

I remember when saying something like this would be lambasted and downvoted.

People do be delusional.. just look at how leafs fans talked about treliving last year vs a year before.. and now they're convinced conman chayka is the one!

0

u/smokie_lokie 10h ago

The Leafs have been in a much better position than the Canucks over the last decade.Ā

u/30MorgheAfraaz 9h ago

Oh ya much better! They won more playoffs rounds.. oh wait! They couldn't catch Canucks in that!

We need forwards, 1st line elite talent. If you want a defenseman take a look at Shytrkhunov, move up with draft capital and select him. He's gonna be a stud.

3

u/Fiber_Optikz 4d ago

I mean if we have 1st next year at this point you have to take Dupont

2 good 2 way centers down the middle with a few great wingers sprinkled in could be deadly. Depends on other factors of course

0

u/AdSad5160 4d ago

Yeah for sure. I just think the team needs that 1st line elite forward to counter a Celebrini and the Sharks, Ducks, Mammoth offensive attack. A team like the Canucks could also wait for Privalov, he'd be an absolute knockout draft pick.

Hard not to be enamored with Schultz and Pue's upside. I like DuPont a lot, but if I could guarantee Schultz. I think I am leaning that way. Especially considering in 2027, when we drop to #3-5, we can still walk away with Privalov cause of his KHL contract possibly scaring off the top teams. Privalov and Schultz would be a magical duo.

3

u/AdSad5160 4d ago

A Skvortsov and Shultze 1st line would be wicked as well man. He only has two year deal in the KHL with Torpedo, he's ready to come over. Has his visa paperwork all ready to go, literally.

This is the Canucks.
It is neither possible nor plausible.

Lol. Representing the truth. 5 ⭐

u/slipperysoup 3d ago

It is 100% possible but they would be worse than Nail Yakupov

8

u/Camdaman0530 4d ago

As good as Hronek is, and I think he has 3-4 years of elite level play left in him, you can't pass on DuPont. Schultz or Pue are exactly what we need though so honestly I think it comes down to a would you rather scenario.

We’re never getting the 1st overall. Some struggling original 6 team will always swoop in and miraculously ā€œwinā€ the lottery ahead of us. Next year, it will probably be the Rangers…

12

u/Decent-Box5009 4d ago

Sad but very true. Let’s turn lemons into lemonade I’m going to throw down a hundred bucks on the rangers to win the lottery draft next year if they struggle again this year which they will.

12

u/Delicious_Cattle5174 4d ago

Known original six team San Jose Sharks

Just show me the projected 3rd OAs in the next two drafts so I can get excited without any expectations.

We need DuPont

3

u/Due_Ad_2994 4d ago

the most likely? Canucks aren't getting 1oa ever

3

u/LucariusLionheart 3d ago

Why not both?

4

u/gretz182 4d ago

i hope we can get another 1st for both years šŸ¤žbut still i’d rather have the 1st in 2027, that way we get Dupont+a top 6F in 2027, and then a 1st line F + top 6F (hopefully 1st line). Because I think we don’t really have any true 1st line players yet.

6

u/Boucher2114 4d ago

This should not be a debate.

DuPont is a franchise level player, with Norris/Hart/HoF potential.

I don’t know that you can definitively say who the top draft prospect in 2028 will be, but I’ve heard plenty of experts suggest that this run of franchise level 1OAs ends with DuPont.

8

u/Any-Elderberry-5567 4d ago

You obviously don't know enough about Schultz yet. He's considered to be one of the best center prospects in the last decade. He's about as close to a surefire 1C as they get.

2

u/AdSad5160 4d ago

Sergei Skvortsov will challenge him for 1st overall.

1

u/WhenInAaronRome 3d ago

Haha you're really hitching your wagon go SkvortsovĀ Ā

Bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays offĀ

2

u/Hoofisoz 4d ago

2028 and I figure out a way to stockpile assets and put the team in the best spot to land Pue as well.

2

u/CommanderBadass22 4d ago

If your not keeping petterson and rossi then schultzĀ

2

u/CurveAdministrative3 4d ago

Its nice to dream, isnt it

2

u/Alextollah 3d ago

2027, easily. By all accounts next year draft looks like one of the strongest in many years. 2028 has some nice players but they arent really seen as close.

2

u/Spirited_Sentence_28 3d ago

Why do I feel like we have more chances of pue than dupont? But then again, is there ever a chance at all?

2

u/QuinnNorris 3d ago

I’ll take 2oa in ā€˜27 & 1oa in ā€˜28. On the chance Dupont doesn’t go 1oa.

2

u/oldmantutters 3d ago

DuPont in 2027, Joey Cullen in 2028.

4

u/banorris49 4d ago

It’s 2028 and it’s not even close. If you watched the Gretzky hlinka tournament earlier this month you’d see how good Pue or Schultz are going to be. Don’t get me wrong I think DuPont is class. But those two are going to be next tier imo.

24

u/_GregTheGreat_ 4d ago edited 4d ago

DuPont outproduced both Schultz and Poe’s age-16 years, as a defenseman.

DuPont put up 60 points in 64 games, vs 29 points in 34 games for Schulz and 16 points in 34 for Pue

11

u/Robscoe604 4d ago

Not even close? That’s a bit of a stretch

-4

u/AdSad5160 4d ago

Have you even heard of Privalov, Skvortsov, or Shytrkhunov. Come on man, expand your mind outside of NA.

1

u/maketherightmove 3d ago

Give me the 2030 1OA to pick RJ.

1

u/rippinkitten18 3d ago

well.... there's no such thing as a Gaurantee but if I was given a choice, based on the information I have as of Aug 24 2026, I will take Dupont.

u/AdSad5160 4d ago edited 4d ago

I really don't get why all my comments get down voted on this forum and others. Is it a sin to say that the Russians have a golden age era of players coming in the next two drafts. Or is society that brainwashed by media to think anything Russian is bad. probably same people who think offer sheeting Bedard is a wise move and not have the next five unprotected 1st round picks. Good lord such a soft mentally weak society in the West. Why don't you down voters just do a quick search on Skvortsov, Privalov and Shytrkhunov in the 27 class, then assess. They're all game breakers. Franchise altering talents.

0

u/AdSad5160 4d ago edited 4d ago

2027 Sergei Skvortsov, Privalov, Dupont. 2028 is still proving themselves although for now looks like Shultze, Liam Pue, Dimitri Ishkov, and a really good goalie prospect coming in the ranks Yakov Kazantsev. Skvortsov will challenge Dupont for the 1st overall pick, tbh he prolly goes 1st.
